I hear ya, MC.
There was a potential disaster brewing for the 49ers when they rolled out Jaylon Moore to start at left tackle in place of the injured Trent Williams on Monday night in Minnesota. Not only did Moore avoid disaster in his fourth-career start at left tackle, he was perhaps San Francisco's best offensive lineman.
Moore received a strong 73.1 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus and allowed only one pressure and one hurry in 33 pass blocking snaps against a Vikings defense that blitzed on 21 of quarterback Brock Purdy's 33 dropbacks.
The 49ers didn't run behind Moore much, but running back Christian McCaffrey carried twice to his side for six yards and one touchdown
Even during the game it was evident that Moore wasn't a problem on the 49ers' offensive line. His performance makes it worth wondering if he's one of San Francisco's five best offensive linemen, especially since right tackle Colton McKivitz allowed a team-high six pressures, five hurries and one sack while also struggling as a run blocker.
It's unclear what Williams' timeline for a return is. He injured his ankle in Week 6 and was ruled out for Monday night's game. If he's able to come back in Week 8 it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see the 49ers try fitting Moore into their offensive line given how well he acquitted himself Monday night.

Yeah, with Stanley off the market I have to think that AP has an edge with Jaylon Moore but who knows.

But through four games, Williams' replacement, fourth-year tackle Jaylon Moore, has given up zero sacks and just one quarterback hit. Turns out he's a solid starting offensive tackle. And he has been wasting away on the bench since the 49ers took him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for the 49ers, Moore will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, so if he continues to play well, the 49ers may not be able to afford to keep him.
Here's what 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster said this week about Moore, courtesy of the 49ers' p.r. department.
Q: What have you gotten from Jaylon Moore? How do you feel about just how he has stepped in from the bench?
FOERSTER: “Jaylon’s done a good job. Last week his hip started bothering him in warmups, so last week probably wasn't as good a game as he's had in some of the other two. He's done a good job. There's a lot of things he can still work on to be better. Starting consistently week after week becomes an issue as always. They start getting a book on you, things you're doing that you need to fix and work on to get better. He held it his own last week and did a good job.”

It's not a bad place for the team to be if that's what they want. It's also too bad we don't have that situation with other of our higher profile FA's, slim market at positions especially of need

Yeah, I guess that’s the big thing: do they feel like they can upgrade with Hufanga or do they view him as an even swap, or a backup plan.
I don’t have a problem with Chinn testing the market. But the safety market is squirrelly, he might not like what he learns.
Hufanga IMO is a clear peg better player than Chinn. And this is coming from someone who liked Chinn even before he was even drafted. The issue with Hufanga is health.
Personally I think they can use both. they play three safety sets plenty.
if they are playing cover 2, don't love the idea of Chinn as the 2nd safety. i want Chinn playing closer to the line of scrimmage. It's one of many reasons why i don't think adding a third safety is redundant.
Josh Sweat isn't even remotely in the same league as Hendrickson. IMO he's a guy who benefitted from massive other talent on a loaded DL and will mostly be a JAG on another team. His pass rush win rate is very pedestrian at 14% vs Hendrickson at 24%. Some other comparisons:
Hendrickson:
Sacks: 1st
Hurries: 4th
Hits: 4th
Total Pressures: 1st (tied with Garrett)
Pass Rush Snaps: 5th
Sweat:
Sacks: 26th
Hurries: 18th
Hits: 24th
Total Pressures: 21st
Pass Rush Snaps: 32nd
This tells us that not only did Sweat take far less pass rush snaps, but he was also less effective when doing so. The only advantages Sweat has is that he's a little more than 2 years younger (Hendrickson turned 30 in December, Sweat turns 28 this month), he'll command less money, and he won't cost a draft pick.
I could see the argument for Sweat from the perspective of depth and more decent pass rush talent, but he's absolutely not a guy other teams have to game plan for and Hendrickson absolutely is a guy other teams have to game plan for. If we can get Hendrickson for a 2nd, I'd 100% pull the trigger.

Yes, but he doesn't cost us 35 million a year and draft picks, and is younger.
Right, Sweat would probably cost 20 million a year or so, and he's 2 years younger. Goes back to the question of what we want: some decent pass rush depth that we would be (IMO) overpaying for, or an elite pass rusher we'd have to pay a 2nd round pick and elite market price for?
Our issues with pass rushing last season weren't that we didn't have enough decent depth, it was that we didn't have anyone that scared opposing defenses. Hendrickson gives us that, Sweat doesn't.
Add: I could also see it if Sweat was some monster against the run, but he's not. Sweat had a PFF run defense grade of 69.3 vs Hendrickson at 65.9. So Sweat is graded slightly higher, but not by much at all and he's nothing special there.
