There are extenuating circumstances for Deebo's last year (totally different dynamics in the O, he himself playing hurt). Also, Deebo's past is better than this year.
There are other factors at play:
- if he became an FA now, I don't think he would go for the 1-year deal. I think he would get a longer term with a decent AAV. I think Deebo is coming here because yes his contract says so, yes the money is good, but also YES, he is excited to do so. He wanted to be traded, and AP would absolutely NOT do this without confirming Deebo is on board. I am 99.99% confident in that.
- a 1-year deal here is, by some, being looked at as bad. Comms have the money for this guy even if he ends up being overpriced. It's a good gamble, given all of the factors at play. Yes, it may not work out (hence, the "Gamble" aspect) but in my eyes at least, the wager is pretty strong. We are going to get the best version of him, and I don't think he feels he was used at his best last year, plus I think most know he was banged up badly. He wanted to come to a team where he can make a strong case for his NEXT contract.
Basically, he treated us like some players treated the Eagles last year. They wanted to go to a contender. Yes, the price was higher than I'd like too, but I don't think it's out of whack and I hope the "coming to a contender" thing keeps going. That's the kind of thing where if we can build year-to-year cache, it can keep us in the mix for a Super Bowl every year if it's handled correctly. I trust AP... until I don't! Haha.
