In Round 2 you are looking for guys that project to be a full time starter at TE, a player that doesn’t take 2-3 years to develop.

Guys like that can be found later on.

BTW - Jusczyk was taken later in the FOURTH round, appropriate place for a contributor but not a high impact player.

I kindof think Sinnott could have done a lot more but Ertz was playing so well ahead of him he just didn’t get opportunities to get on the field.

And TEs can develop more slowly. Give him another year and let’s see.

I am just wondering looking at this roster overall that Washington could be an 8 win team in 2025 if major upgrades are not made and that includes in my mind finding younger Day 3 draft picks and UDFAs that can come in and play.

KC won a Super Bowl with a rookie #7 running back in Pacheco being the primary starter.

I want to see some gems like that here.

It’s great to see Ertz and Wagner turn back the clock and have memorable seasons in 2024but there’s no guarantee they come back and play as well or stay healthy.
 
When Jayden hits his extension and gets big money we’ll need to rely on rookie contracts and role players on the offensive side of the ball. Look at KC, now that Mahomes has a $66M cap hit he gets a 35-year old Travis Kelce, rookie Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Isiah Pacheco and even good ol' Samaje Perine to work with.

We're in a unique situation with Jayden playing on his rookie deal for another couple years and then getting a relatively cheap 4th year as well with his pro-rated signing bonus on top of his fourth year salary. The point is, now is the time to allocate cap space to expensive skill guys on offense. Front-load the cap hits for the next three years so by the time Jayden extends these contracts come down. Higgins/Godwin at receiver and a stud OL if one becomes available.

Defensively I expect them to sign good DBs and DeMarcus Lawrence at Edge then go try to draft the next great pass rusher.

Ertz and Wagner are guys that are in the gray area for me - not necessarily a must re-sign, but if they come back for a modest gain, then I'm all for it. We need to make sure Sinnott is more involved in the offense moving forward and I believe part of our run defense's issues was not with play recognition, but the ability to have the speed to make the play by our LB corps.
 
The trouble is we don’t have emerging younger players at these spots to take over in 2025.

Ditto with Ekeler.

How Washington has the oldest group of backs in the NFC East is a mystery based on fact we are going through a makeover in 2024.

We evidently couldn’t unearth one running back or wideout during or after the draft that could come in and show some ‘ups’ as they used to call it for the future.

McNichols is 29 and Ekeler is going to be 30.

As a team coming off 4-13 last year I wanted to see a roster favoring more youth and speed.
 
I think they saw Magee as the eventual Wagner replacement but he started the year on IR and mainly played teams. Let him sit and learn behind Wagner another year and let him take over in 2026 if shows he has it. If he isn’t getting them excited then maybe a guy like Chris Paul Jr in the 3rd
 
Too bad we didn’t get anything out of Sinnott and McCaffrey.

With #2 and #3 picks at those positions I really thought Daniels would have some younger emerging targets.

Instead both of them are just as much question marks as they were before the opener.

With the caveat that McCaffrey is a good kickoff returner by his averages and held onto the ball.

But I would have been happier if McCaffrey was a #6 pick who got on the field and surprised us with his return skills.

In Round 3 looking for more.

Any idea how Magee did on teams or defensive snaps? The only time I noticed him was on injury reports which I'm sure isn't fair or accurate.
 
These guys are convinced that tee Higgins gets franchised if they don’t sign him to a long term deal.


 
What are people's thoughts on Jordan Mason, from the 49ers? He was stuck behind CMC until this year but looked pretty solid. High ankle sprain at the end there but he was over 5 ypc and .24 forced missed tackles per attempt was solid.

With the RB depth in the draft I dunno if we want to go to free agency for a starter, there's probably a Bucky Irving or 3 floating in the 2nd-5th rounds this year, but he seems like an intriguing option. 25 years old and not much wear and tear on him.

Now we'd have to pry him away from the 49ers who might tender him in some fashion, but worth examining, he's one of the few RB FAs who might be better than what we have in house.

No idea. He played 15 defensive snaps (we stuck w/ 2 LBs almost exclusively) and 31% of ST snaps. The team seemed to like Mykal Walker - he played 77 defensive snaps (about 7%) and 73% of ST snaps.

Probably better to stay away from Shanahan RBs unless you run them through the same offense. Like his Dad, they are generally manufactured through that system. Which is how the Shanahans take undrafted RBs like Mason and make them 1k (or nearly 1k) guys.

Fwiw this draft is supposed to be the best draft for RBs in a long long time. "Experts" are saying up to 30 rbs coukd be drafted.
 
Yeah drafting an RB is definitely a better play but I was curious what options were out there in FA.

None really stood out (besides Mason a bit). Either too old or not really an upgrade. Like unless they feel Dowdle or Harris is being underutilized and they're secretly amazing, there's nothing better than what we have (maybe a little better if Ekeler is declining).

But also picking up an FA to compete for the starting job makes the succession plan kinda awkward. The Bucky Irving "oh hey our 4th rounder is actually amazing" succession plan is much better if they can find him.
 
The tough part of going into the free agency is where do you focus your effort. The knowledge of what is out there, what is their character and do they fit into our culture. Talent/money is answered by risk/reward. Then, of course, the draft and its many possibilities have to be added to the mix. A mind boggling database of talent to try and add and subtract to our product. The best part is our template for what we are looking for, has some teeth. A fantastic situation for us. We have money to spend and a clear message on what we are looking for.

For my money, I look at this year and ask what would have been the most impactful, with this crew vs the teams we played, addition that would have taken us closer to our main goal. To me, hands down, offensive and defensive lineman. I focus there for immediate impact and draft accordingly. I protect my top asset and provide him a chance to use his talent by design, not necessity. I start there. Find me another Cosmi for the left side. A mauler.

We're always looking to upgrade at every position. A 12 win team, regardless of how you think we got there, needs a surgical correction, not a rip apart and rebuild. I have complete faith in AP and DQ.
 
I think DE/OL/CB (including S) is where I'd focus in FA. Probably double dip and draft that as well. 😆

Of course, getting a WR2 is a must whether that's FA or draft.
 
I think with safety, outside of depth, I probably just re-sign Chinn and roll with Chinn and Quan. There are too many holes to spend a lot of resources there when we can probably get B to B+ play out of the two of them.

I really hope Lattimore is back to form, because Lattimore/Sanristil is a decent 1/2 and then it's just a question of if you want to re-sign Noah or BSJ or look outside for our 3/4/etc.

Legion of Boom it is not, but Lattimore/Chinn/Quan/Sanristil as a top 4 in the secondary is a unit that can work. Then we can focus on the front 7.

If Lattimore isn't back to form, we have bigger problems, but we probably won't know until camp at the earliest, or the season at worst, and by then it's probably too late. So I'm just penciling in Lattimore as CB1 and calling that a day.

The more I look at our situation the more I feel like Allen might get cut. Payne is younger so he might be kept, but you can't have that much money tied up in that unit for the production it made. I wonder how much Poona Ford would cost, he graded well in run defense, so he's an interesting option.

I saw a report tying us to Osa O. from Dallas for DLine, but his run defense grade is pretty bad. If we added Osa and Poona we probably have a pretty complete unit, in the aggregate at least.

Agree with this logic. WE have 3 - 4 years before JD gets get his what, $85 million per year (he is going to be the highest paid player in the nfl whenever he signs his next contract, however high that is). sign FA's to deals that we can get out of after year 3. Then use draft picks to pick their replacement and build up the depth. Obviously we expect higher draft picks to contribute more sooner, but use the window we have to be great now!!!
