The 2025 Free Agency Thread

We have posting traditions here that we’ve had for years and years. Generally sticking to a thread topic is one of them. It’s not a chatroom:)

I understand, and that’s why we let 90% of it go.

Last thing ever want to do here is over-moderate or make people hesitant to post. Just ask that we keep within the subject matter of the thread as much as possible.

I think a lot of our new members grew up in ‘Mega-thread’ land. We have a different philosophy here.

I figured we weren’t done at WR. Gallup as a #4 or #5 WR isn’t too shabby. I will disagree that it means anything about how they view McCaffery. I think they still have high hopes on him.

I don't expect much from the Gallup signing. If he even stays around for the year I'd be surprised, if he out does D Brown I'd even be impressed. He's getting paid minumum wage. Good thing they feed them! LOL.

Rasul Douglass and Asante Samuel Jr. are still unsigned. I am guessing that they are asking for too much, but nobody is picking them up so who knows. We might get one for cheap if they are a fit. Samuel is still young but he might be a bit too much Emmanuel Forbes for this coaching staff.

I kind of see Trent Scott taking the Travis Hunter role as a WR and a CB.

The big thing with the WR room is that it is full of guys on one year deals AND have something to prove. They have a good offense and an elite QB, so the table is set for them to succeed if they have what it takes. Keeps them all hungry and pushing....

Not really if he follows up like I've read with running at his pro day. And if there is anything to him being clocked multiple times over 20 MPH on runs last year.

Supposedly he was sick during the combine. lol, if it was anything stomach related the last thing you want to do is sprints on a sick stomach.

He had the 5th best vertical of any player at the combine. 2nd best at RB. Better than Henderson even though he's about 20 pounds heavier. That shows some levels of athleticism. At a minimum he's not a stiff athlete if you can jump like that.

Even if he did run a 4.6, its no deal breaker for a dude who runs and catches like that. He had the 2nd most yards running in this group. The most catching yards. The 2nd most broken tackles. 2nd in both cases to Jeanty.

I think he runs somewhere in the 4'5s. I hope its nothing better than that because lol, he'd be going early 2nd. Right now he seems to be considered by many late 2nd-early third.
he chose not to run at his pro day either . . . last time he as clocked was a while back and at 4.62 . . . he also fumbles a lot and runs too upright at times. IMO he will be an average back at best and possible a straight out flop.

I'll respond to this on the draft thread. The big 12 day proday (just happened) and their local proday (on the 27th) are two different things from what I've gathered.

I think one thing that I’ve not seen said a bunch of times, is that if the Bengals don’t extend or trade Hendrickson, that he will probably be available to us for no draft compensation next year.

And, as soon as I typed that, I decided to check their cap situation, and they probably have room to franchise him next year.

If I’m the Bengals, that’s probably what I do. Try to get 2 more years out of my 31 year old edge. That’s likely two more years of keeping Joe Burrow’s SB window open.

And they can move on from him at any time if it looks like Father Time starts keeping up.

I'm fine with the WR room. We've already seen JD elevate the group we had last season. Now let's get us a juicy RB though...
I am with you. If another team has to scheme for a great running back, then it should open up things for the WR

The Michael Gallup signing is okay. While he hasn’t topped 500 yards since 2020, he has had a 1,000-yard season in the pros, he scores touchdowns, and he is a vet at a position where we’re a little thin. The unretirement thing is odd though.

I think he and Noah Brown were teammates in Dallas. I wonder how they get along.

As far as what the signing means for McCaffery, I wouldn’t read much into it. McClaurin and Deebo are pretty much set at WR1 and WR2, and I might give Gallup the edge at WR3, but he’s not so good that a guy who is ready to take the next step couldn’t beat him out.

I am not sure about this Gallup signing. I look at a lot of moves under these types of lenses:
- Did this move help the team? Some will misunderstand and think that any "addition" helps but this just is not true. There are some additions that take playing time away from better players. There are some additions that are totally redundant to players already signed.
--- For this move, I think the answer is yes, with the caveat on the "players already signed."
- Is this move better than other moves the team could have made? If not, to further critique, is there a potential bias involved?
--- This is where things get a little strange for me. I feel like Jamison Crowder and Michael Gallup may be in similar places here. Gallup is 2 years younger, but Crowder played for this team pretty well last year in the role he was given, and I think it has the same look as this Gallup signing. Did Gallup get signed over similar and potentially less risky players because he knows DQ well?
--- There are concerns here, I think, especially about biases. That said, there is enough here (age; they did have him tryout) to suggest that Gallup could be as good or better than other options. As long as that is the case, I think we have to go on with the "trust the guys until they prove us wrong." They earned it. This position isn't as critical, but that excuse for me doesn't hold water. The best teams want every position filled by the best options who can fit the plan (which includes contracts as a consideration; you can't just put all the players you want on a team), full stop.

Crowder has been getting injured, and he is getting older, but Gallup was ALSO getting injured in his career even though he is younger. This move and the Kinlaw contract amount are the only blemishes I see so far. That is an excellent track record across the number of moves they have had to make. For those who wanted particular players, I am just assuming that the plan they have, again including contract, but also including usage, these players fit. You can kind of see how it could all work - so now the proof will be in the pudding.

I really didn't expect Crowder back this season and I am doubtful Gallup makes the team either. I do like bringing in vets to compete, push and perhaps earn roster spots based on what they bring each year. Crowder was solid with contributions this year at receiver and gave us another returner.

I am expecting a day 3 WR being drafted this year that will add to the competition. I can see that player having PR/ST experience as well which of course will give them a leg up on a roster spot. Myles Price type player which they have shown interest in.

Expectations are also high the McCaffrey with a year under his belt makes him a more valuable used chess piece. Also Noah being back and participating in a full off-season with the team should make this group gel with Terry and Deebo taking a load off the group.

Gallup was signed to a 1 year deal for vet minimum. It’s absolutely a no-risk signing. If he still has gas in the tank it just boosts the WR room. One man’s ‘bias’ is another man’s ‘knowledge’. DQ knowing Gallup and seeing him every day is a huge plus. I don’t think he and Jamison Crowder are similar players. Gallup is more of a downfield target and has never been used as an RPO guy like Crowder has. Crowder brings value as a returner, Gallup doesn’t. Crowder is a high % short passing game specialist, Gallup is more of a traditional WR. And Crowder has a lot more mileage on him (almost 40 more games than Gallup).

Totally different guys.

I’m not sure if both, one, or neither of them make the roster but the depth and competition is great.

If Terry was out for a game or two, who would you need the most to fill that gap? I'm thinking Gallup over Crowder

I think those guys are 4’s or 5’s not 3’s. If Terry or Deebo is out it will be Noah Brown or KJ, maybe even McCaffery who would be likelier to come in imho.

But we are a long way from September so a lot could change between now and then…

Gallup at 1.xM points to him being slowed after his injury. Likely permanently. Nothing new for NFL players to keep plugging away re-inventing their games with their shiny new non-bionic body parts. Gally working the short game in the slot can help salvage his career. Low risk signing on the cheap, nothing not to like.

I love that Noah is back. I see KJ helping taking over Dyami's role to some extend, he's good. The kick in the crotch for Luke fans IMO was Deebo for the upcoming season. Barring injuries I think Luke will be on simmer another year. This should surprise no one of course, he was raw and we all know it. And long time fans know it can take years for WRs to develop. I just hope we didnt draft the name.

It's awesome seeing depth charts finally updated year round, even if its some web guy throwing darts. Just put the fucking linked names out there and lets us digest it. Hmmm who is this Strahan Strachan cat? Dont want to get you Mixed up diehards fired up today, but he is 6'5. Maybe insurance for Noah's role.
