The 2025 Draft Thread

I am not sleeping on Egbuka being the pick. He might fall that far down. Feels like a perfect Peters pick. High floor WR, who would likely contribute right away. Really good blocker. High intangibles -- Terry level high.

I know the draft to need thought is it has to be edge. But maybe I am in the minority but I don't see D line as the ticking time bomb with this team -- worse case we got a run stuffing D line potentially right now but lacking pass rushing juice.

But if Terry gets hurt or Lattimore is for real who we saw at the end of the year then to me the ticking time bombs might be WR and CB where the wheels can fall off. Some say well look we made due with a motley crew of miscasts at Z-slot and can do it again. I agree we can do it again but only if Terry stays healthy. If Terry is out, we are screwed. Many teams don't have that problem -- yeah they are worse if their 1 is out, but many have better #2's than we do, or if not a stud TE.

And this isn't my way of saying the need for a WR >> DE. I don't feel that way at all. I am with the conventional thinking on that. But my point is WR isn't crazy, especially Egbuka.

I thought about Luther Burden, too. i am higher on Egbuka. But I see some logic in Burden, too. He would create even more chaos with slants-backfield motion. Him and Deebo would be a handful. Same reason why I wouldn't rule out Skattebo as the RB. SF team building style is to double down on players stylstically to build an identity. Skattebo and Deebo would certainly be an indentity combination.

WR wouldn’t stun me either, Egbuka or Burden.

Something else that crossed my mind is whether we might still consider Josh Connerly, if he looks like BPA.

I don’t think this FO is going to be as predictable with regards to drafting for need.

Yes. They’ve been a little conservative for me.

We needed an established pass rusher and we’ve basically done nothing. Maybe Sweat and Mack and Reddick etc just weren’t worth it and wouldn’t actually have been that big an upgrade. At least resign Fowler then.

I just don’t see how you can basically have zero pass rush threats and go into the draft picking 29, and expect to go to the Super Bowl. Has any team ever, like, ever ever, won a Super Bowl with this little talent in terms of pass rushers? And if that’s not the goal, why give up the draft capital for lol of these trades we’ve made?

I also don’t know that I feel like we have, “plenty of picks”. Think that 3 picks in the 1st five rounds is a little rough.

I don’t hate what they’ve done. I LOVE the Tunsil trade and think that could outweigh every single other move.

I just don’t see us as a legit Super Bowl contender unless things magically come together in terms of finding some guys that can get to to QB reliably.

As for picks. I don't live and die with a 5th rounder -- for every Tim Settle, you get 10 Keith Ismaels. I think if I recall the hit rate is about 15% in the 5th.

The third round, if I recall the hit rate is about 33% that's much better. But I think they can overcome those loses. Impact players are typically first and 2nd rounders. And regardless I strongly suspect they get both the third round and 5th back.

The weird thing about this team is they almost made the SB last year without many marquee players. i am good with adding three of them at least in theory -- and sacrifice some draft capital to do it.

WR wouldn’t stun me either, Egbuka or Burden.

Agree. I think part of it for me is I while I want more additions at the D line -- I still think they will sign a FA, like a Z. Smith, Von Miller, will see. I'd like to upgrade that spot but I don't see it as code red.

If its all about win now. To me its on the table to add a player who likely makes an instant impact -- Egbuka IMO fits that. So would adding a RB like Hampton (I think he will be gone though) or Henderson, etc.

If its about beating the Eagles, adding players on the D line who can stuff the run make sense, which they did. I do like Jonathan Jones. Fingers crossed that Lattimore finds his groove. I think Chinn was a bit overrated and woukdn't surprise me if Harris is better at least in coverage.

What else to beat the Eagles? You can't be one dimensaional against them. Jalen Carter isn't a beast because he's some monster run stuffer. He isn't even that good against the run. But he penetrates and causes havoc. You got to keep that D line off balance with some semblence of the run game.

Also in 2 of their 3 matchups, they shut down Terry. Mitchell seems to handle Terry well. But heck its even easier when they bracket Terry which they tend to do. The Eagles clearly weren't scared of any other WR. Ertz could get open against them. But who else? Egbuka is really good at getting open. He also helps the run game. And if they are in love with "brotherhood" building the best locker room -- Egbuka is off the charts on that front.

I asked this earlier and don't think I got a response so for all our draft geeks out there could you please post the three players we have met three times with. I think that's a significant data point for this draft. I know one was a RB, although can't remember his name. Many thanks.

Burgundy Burner is usually ALL over team visits. He may be able to answer your question. He is a longtime member here and is a great Twitter follow @BurgundyBurner

Myles Price, WR, Indiana (East-West Shrine Meeting) (Dinner/Private Meeting) (Team Pro Day)
Woody Marks, RB, Southern California (Senior Bowl Meeting) (NFL Combine - Formal) (Team Pro Day Meeting)
Billy Bowman Jr., S, Oklahoma (Senior Bowl Meeting) (NFL Combine - Formal) (Team Pro Day Meeting)

potentially right now but lacking pass rushing juice

I do like our DT group though it may be a bit long in the tooth. I'd be a shame if we cannot generate pressure off the edge because I do think this group can and will in the middle. If we can merge those, well obviously it would be a good thing :) Nothing QB's hate more than pressure in the middle.

I like Marks as an Ekeler replacement. Bowman’s interesting. I believe Butler and Reaves are in the last year of their deals)?), and I’m not sure if they’re getting enough out of Martin, though it’s hard to judge given other defensive issues last year. Going forward, Martin, Bowman, Owens and Hampton would be an intriguing (and really young) group.

Speaking of Hampton, I never heard whether his transition to LB was more about learning the dimebacker/star role (ie he’d play a S/LB hybrid role ala Chinn), which was always my assumption. Can’t imagine he can put on enough weight otherwise…

We are in a prime area of the draft and a good draft to trade back from 29

Pick up and early 2nd and early 3rd sounds good to me. The defense has holes to fix

Scroll to the bottom. This is a very comprehensive list.

I got to piece that together. I think Billy Bowman was one of them.

Me too. I think Woody's flying under the radar in this group. And I hope it continues!

He's one of the first RBs I watched in this class so am partial to him. Surprised he gets much less hype than RBs like Jordan James because to me he's in that same strata. Age could be part of it. So many of these RBs are 21. Heck Sampson is 20. While, Woody is already 24. If there is a spot where age matters it seems to be this one. Also, pedestrian combine especially stacked against this class. So i am guessing he goes 6th-7th or maybe even UDFA. But if they wait to that late in the draft, I think Marks is a good fit.

Phil Mafah reminds me a lot of Robinson (in a good way, lol). Probably needs some work in pass protection, but I like that he doesn’t (regularly) get tripped up by ankle tackles. He’s got a bit more juice and shiftiness than I was expecting reading scouting reports. Bringing him up because we met w/ him a couple times (thanks for posting the mtgs Anselmheifer!).

I'd really expect a trade of either our 1st and acquire an additional 2nd and 3rd to end up with a 2, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or a trade of our 2nd and end up with a 1, 3, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 1, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7.

I think Peters trades down a couple of times during the draft to get us back up to having the full complement of 7 picks.

If we get the player we are targeting at #29 I could see using the second round pick to move down and pick up another #4 or a middle to late #3 and #5 if someone else is desperate enough.

Hampton is the one I really really hope falls to us and we are smart enough to draft. But i think no way he makes it to 29.
Would love to get Hampton as well. With such a deep draft at running back, I can see some teams filling other needs in rd 1 and waiting on running back. Wishful thinking maybe, but I think it’s at least possible he falls.

Our #29 is a sweet spot for another team to move back up to acquire a QB in the draft as they don't want to spend a high 1st rounder on one possibly or take another player. As you stated though, if a player that AP really wants is there at #29 he pulls the trigger.

It's a good position to be in this year as there are not as many blue chippers early as 2024 but better depth later in the draft, especially on defense.
