The 2025 Draft Thread

Mike Shanahan made his name as the QB coach at the Broncos (John Elway) and then OC of the 49ers (Steve Young) and then Head Coach back at the Broncos (John Elway).

In between the stints with the Broncos and 49ers he failed as HC of the Raiders - QBs Jeff George and Wade Wilson.

He wins his two Super Bowls as a HC with Elway.

He might be a great coach - but having his success with two HOF QBs sure helped …

He also had a lot of success with Drunky McDiabetes pants. What was his name? Jay Cutler. Also had a very successful year with RGIII. His system was very QB friendly and his son has run a similar system with great success with Purdy.

He also made Jake the Snake Plummer look like a legitimate starting QB in the NFL.

I think both Shanahans get more hate around these parts than is generally earned.

Though both are enormous pompous arrogant ass hats. They are both outstanding coaches. And work well with QBs.

Yes, but I guess I was semi-arguing the point about there not being any QB whisperers. I kind of agree? There I don't think that there are any guys that can take a Sam Howell and make him an actual middle of the league starter. But, I do think there are schemes that can hide that would otherwise be an inadequate QB, and those schemes do seem to consistently succeed at this.

Also, I wish Mike Green had been on the board at 61, not because I'd prefer him to Amos, but because I'm curious which the team would have preferred.

Just gonna call him J-CM pronounced Jay-Cum.

This is a good listen. Logan LOVES Kai Medrano but had the funniest thing to say about him, which I agree with. He said Medrano isn't a forceful tackler, he's kind of a, "whisper in your ear and go down with you" kind of tackler. Hilarious. Anyway, I think that's where the missed tackles come from. He has WR arms and is a grab and drag tackler.

Kyle Shanahan's issue to me has always been his play-calling. He designs a really nice offense, but he often gets too cute in situations it isn't needed, especially when the team is ahead late in games.

I am really, really, excited about seeing JCM and Lane in the preseason. It’s going to make watching the preseason worthwhile to me for the first time in a minute. Medrano too.

Washington Commanders

Round 1 (29): OT Josh Conerly Jr., Oregon
Round 2 (61): CB Trey Amos, Ole Miss
Round 4 (128): WR Jaylin Lane, Virginia Tech
Round 6 (205): LB Kain Medrano, UCLA
Round 7 (245): RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Arizona
They didn’t have much draft capital after trading for OT Laremy Tunsil and WR Deebo Samuel this offseason, but they might have found two long-term starters in OT Josh Conerly Jr. (no. 29) and Ole Miss CB Trey Amos (no. 61). Virginia Tech WR Jaylin Lane was great value at no. 128—I had him ranked in my top 100. Lane has never had a QB who could maximize his speed and playmaking; imagine what Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels can do with him.

I listened to Conerly on 106.7. Really impressive sounding and smart.

I've listened just about every interview of every draft pick they've picked for two decades plus, this dude was one of the best.

There was a reporter who covered Conerly in Oregon who was interviewed about him recently, and he goes that he's an A plus dude and smart as heck and a football junkie who didn't just study his own assignments but wanted to know the whole offense and how it all fits together.

Peters said that Conerly was among three of the standout dudes based on inteviews. I am not surprised after listening to that interview.

As Cooley pointed out, the guy is technically sound already too. The only major component missing from his game currently is strength, which is one of the easier things to add

I had watched his presser with Washington media and for some reason he wasn’t what I was expected. Very mature sounding, intelligent and professional. A little like Jon Allen, but less… I don’t know, forced I guess?

He seemed in that interview intelligentl, super articulate and charismatic.

Yeah Allen is uber serious and often comes off a bit angry.

Conerly, granted in a short sample, but comes off looser/happier.

I wouldn’t have thought as much about it if it were not for the Oregon reporter selling Conerly as an A plus guy.

Love hearing this kind of stuff and getting some insight into how the team looks at players; I think personality and culture fit matter a lot to them, with good reason. They are only one year removed from the perennial mess this team was. So, while the culture made a dramatic change in one year, it has to be stable for at least a couple more before we say the turnaround is truly complete I think.

These guys (Peters and Quinn under Harris) are on their way. Wow.
