Tell the Truth Monday- Dallas Edition

The Dallas loss yesterday was the classic Lucy game.

Fans thought it was going to be different this year and actually kick the ball. When Lucy pulled it away, again, lamentations and gnashing of teeth were in order.
One can't say we're throwing out preseason expectations because this team's ahead of schedule and then get aggravated when fans get majorly disappointed when the club displays old habits.
Yes the calls to fire staff and cut players right now is silly. Those fans let this hot start carry them away and all the playoff tracking starting around Week Four was just pure folly.

Older fans should know better. Because basically for the last 25-30 years we get these options presented to us every year.

Option One: Fast start to season and fade out down the stretch
OR
Option Two: start off slow, get on a win streak in the middle of the season just enough to evoke hope, then fade out.

We're right in the normal range for this franchise right now. I don't see anything right now that changes that pattern this season.
Peters is going to have to pull a few more rabbits out of the hat the next two off seasons before that changes.

If you know that going down this stretch, maybe try not to put your heart on your sleeve and live to fight another day.

We could use a dose of hope.

My dose would include:

I need to see Luke McCaffrey. Or at the very least I need to hear the coaches say how he is progressing. Combine that with Lattimore proving he will be our stud cb1. Soon.

I’m somewhat confused on the Ben Sinnott situation. If he is Kyle Juszczyk, then let me see Kyle Juszczyk. This would help my psyche. A lot. Especially since we just lost our top 2 running backs. And because our offense looks anemic.
Let’s get all Kyle Juszczyk in this bitch. Kliff? Hello?

My truth: If Washington loses this week, I'd say the season is over. Which is insanely disappointing considering at one point the team was 7-2 and in the driver's seat.

I'm not sure why we're not seeing more of McCaffery. Sinnott I can understand, Ertz has played well and Bates is an awesome blocker. But I'd definitely have McCaffery play more of those Dyami Brown snaps. He looked good early on but now is getting fewer looks than before. What gives?

I do wanna see more of Sinnott but it'd be a risk play. You're sacrificing the reliability of Ertz for more potential big plays with Sinnott. But a 2nd round pick TE should be ready to contribute at least a little bit at this point. Dude has three catches on the year. THREE.

I'm also a bit disappointed in how little we have seen Sinnott so I decided to do some digging.

He has been in on nearly 30% of our offensive snaps (Ertz 68% and Bates 42%) and he has the only RedZone touch by a TE not named Ertz.

I wish I could find a breakdown of his snaps by run or pass but so far I have not seen that (snap count sites seem aimed at fantasy football and no one cares about who is blocking on running plays).

I can't help but think that this year is being looked at as a chance to work on the parts of Sinnott's game that were viewed as weaker when he came out. Ertz is a pro's pro so it makes sense to look to him more in passing situations while Sinnott is learning how to be a complete TE in the NFL.

Even so, 3 catches on 3 targets is disappointing to me.

The surprising thing to me with both McCaffery and Sinnott is that, to this point, they have to be being overlooked (not taken seriously) by defenses and/or being defended by players down the depth chart in man to man situations.

Seems like a missed opportunity.

McCaffery was getting open and making tough catches early. Clutch ones too(remember the Bengal game his 4th down catch that eventually resulted in a TD?). He had some nice catch and runs being tackled at the 1 yard line too. But its like after that early progress they just stopped throwing to him. By now he should be solidifying himself as a solid #3 option for the future.

I would be curious to know the percentages on when each receiving option is the first read, second read, etc.

My sense is that McLaurin and Ertz get the lion's share of first and second reads in the progression but that is just a gut feeling. I've not tried to figure it out in any legitimate way.

Yeah that much is obvious. You can tell just looking at the TD scorers.

Daniels has only thrown TD passes to five different players. One was Noah Brown on a hail mary and one was to Trent Scott an OL on a trick play, so throw those away. He has 7 TDs to McLaurin and 2 to Ertz(Ertz has 3 total, caught one from Mariotta), and Dyami Brown caught one on a bomb(he's been a screen merchant other wise).

At this point the offense might as well be: if McLaurin and/or Ertz are covered just run.

Sinnott Juszczyk. They are the same guy we kept hearing. Ok. Well. Use him as an H back. Keep Ertz in the game. I don’t care. We know he can elude players. And/or break tackles.

Gibbs would have this installed in 2 days. If Kliff can’t come come up with this now then he is not our guy.

Seriously. I expect them to try it soon because it is so obvious. And move Terry around already.

I do think they need some plays where the number one read is not McLaurin or Ertz. To be fair, it sometimes feels like the offense runs through Noah Brown and he gets the majority of targets, but if the tape shows that McCaffrey is always open then maybe run some plays where Daniels specifically keys on him first. Same with Sinnott. Bates has gotten some good looks because defenses never think to cover him. I think the same may be true for some of our rookie pups.

Rookie pups need to be fed in order to grow.

We know broadcasters talk to coordinators. It was interesting hearing Greg Olsen commenting on how Kliff doesn't move Terry, and he wants to do hurry-up and this is one of the reasons, but it also makes it a lot easier for defenses to key on an individual.

So, Kliff is not helping Terry in that way.

It just seems like there are obvious tweaks that have not been tried for far too long, and it has clearly been noticed.

It doesn't seem like a hard thing to build motion into a hurry up when their version of hurry up isn't so much "snap the ball quick" as it is no huddle. Just build a few tempo plays in which the receiver knows he has to go in motion. As they line up, Daniels yells "Tempo 43" or something and everyone is still on the same page.

Exactly. Plus, if you are subbing, then the defense gets a chance to match your lineup anyway. So what is the value of keeping receivers on one side if the refs hold up the play to let the defense match up? In a true hurry up, I get it and it infuriates me when I’m watching any football and I see guys switching sides during the hurry up 2 minute offense. But when you sub and it’s essentially just no huddle, there is no need to keep the guys in the same spot on the field.

We just can't keep trying to sub guys in in the middle of no huddle/hurry up. Everytime we do the ref stops the snap and we sit there having to wait, risking delay of games(or forcing us to burn timeouts). If you're gonna hurry up then hurry up, can't have it both ways.

I’m probably being naive here, but what’s the point of hurry up if you’re subbing? I can’t come up with a single benefit, only the negatives you mentioned. It just seems like such an obvious problem with an obvious solution - have a hurry up play card broken down by personnel groupings and color coded by down and distance. Keep the same personnel on the field running hurry up, and when you do want to sub, do it and then you can go back to hurry up with that new group if you want.

Point of subbing amid hurry up? I'd guess one guy is gassed or there is a certain play call needing that sub; main goal being to keep the pressure on the DC but putting him into situations he is not comfortable with or used to while still playing as fast as possible.

Trying to keep Klint's foot on the DCs neck, for better or for worse.

be great for a number 2 to emerge opposite terry.
They are trying as hard as they can to have Noah fulfill that role and he's had some moments.

I think Noah is better than just a guy. I'm not sure if he's a number 2 or not, but he seems to get open a fair amount, presents himself so Daniels can find him, and is a pretty good downfield blocker. The hands are okay. The speed is okay.

Brown has exceeded expectations, but he’s not a legit #2. It’s been so long since we had a legit #2 we’ve forgotten what that would look like.
