Team name...Post it all here

I'd have gotten on board with it because it was a fan favorite. Commanders is no one's favorite. It was pulled out of someone's rear end, and imposed on us. Literally anything would be better than Commanders, and I think there is some consensus among fans on that

Also it's a legacy for dan snyder that he doesn't deserve.

We should flush Every last piece of evidence of his existence and make sure there are no streaks left in the bowl.

unfortunately I have a feeling the Commanders name is staying for good especially now that we're winning.

100%. I know that some in the ownership group despise the name. I’m not sure about Harris himself. Nor do we know just how much pressure the NFL is applying to stick with Commanders. And yes, the more success they have under this banner and the longer it goes, the less likely a change is made.

The only thing cool about Commanders would have been calling the stadium Command Center. I'm holding out some hope for a new name with the new stadium, but the name issue doesn't really impact me that much even if I still refer to the team as either Washington or the 'Skins.

As a fan I agree with you about “ doesn’t deserve” and “flush” the Snyder-era, 100%, but these are very savvy business people who own the team now. They would never change the name out of spite. Commanders will stay if it’s making them money and they find ways to make it more palatable for the old school fans.

There has to be something better than "Commanders".

Or that 'W' on the helmet.

However, if Washington starts winning in the playoffs quickly, as in this year, I think Commanders may stick.

The only way it sticks is if they are making more money with Commanders than they would with any other branding... Commanders is a very limited and boring brand that I don't think will sell well, even with winning. I guarantee there are explorations since even before the team was sold to Harris in what branding would be better and more profitable than Commanders. Winning will not retain a brand that is not very marketable and profitable.... They know that all those that like Commanders will accept a new brand also when a new one is announced...

These are my feelings too.

There’s likely (in a broad sense) three types of fans by now.

The Veterans who hate the rebrand and won’t buy the new Commanders stuff regardless.

The newer/casual fans who are okay buying Commanders gear.

The Daniels fans, who are really buying commanders gear because of our new QB. Especially the jerseys. They aren’t buying the brand or the style, they’re buying the player.

I suspect moving to a different name that’s not so obviously Snyder influenced will bring the first group back to a degree, especially if the style homages the look and colour scheme of the original uniforms but with a cooler name and logo.

The JD fans will buy anything, regardless of the name or style.

The middle group who have been weaned on the Commanders brand may be reluctant, but I’d imagine they’re the minority group.

The success we’re having is bringing back the enthusiasm of the old fans, and bringing in the new fans with JDs exciting play.

I think we’re in for a good run to the playoffs this year 🤞🏻but don’t think we’re winning the SB this year.

Now is the time to rebrand and take advantage of what should be a sustained period of success by biting us a better name, with a cooler logo, and a hugely expanded brand reach.

Commanders just feels limited in scope. It’s mediocre, our logo is boooooring, and our style does nothing to pay homage to our history.

Whenever someone would take umbrage with me for the team name, my standard reply was: Have you ever heard anyone use the word “redskins” in a derogatory manner? Now, have you ever heard someone use the word “chief” in a derogatory manner?

But, here we are. Seems the height of hypocrisy to me.

Watch early episodes of the show Gunsmoke with Burt Reynolds. He played a character that had some Native descent. You'll definitely catch plenty of examples. It's possible this was just an invention of the show itself, but it's also possible they pulled that from somewhere in the collective human memory. Also of note: only the 'bad guys' would say it; you never heard the term in a complimentary or descriptive way.

Not that this changes my opinion on the "Redskins" name a whole lot, but it has given me some food for thought in recent weeks.

Also, the "Chiefs" hypocrisy just makes my head hurt. Clearly the reason that organization isn't getting the flack ours did is due to the sustained success. Makes things read more than a little hollow.

Well, one arcane reference, yeah. I know it was used many years ago derogatorily, but any person I’ve asked that question to, has replied no, and that has been a good number of people. In today’s American English lexicon, I would guess that over 95% of people would say it was a sports team name.

I have traveled to Arizona and/or New Mexico a number of times, and on several occasions, have seen someone of Native American descent wearing a shirt from a local school whose nickname is Redskins. It is quite obviously used in a more positive connotation these days.

I haven’t heard chief used derogatorily either tbh. Chief Executive, Commander in Chief, it’s much more ingrained in our language as a positive / value-neutral term.

I agree with most of this. But I do doubt that Gunsmoke was the only show/movie/play/etc. to have that reference. Again, not that that changes my mind a ton, but it does give me pause and stuff to think about.

You’ve never heard someone say, “Right chief,” or the like?

Yep. My version of this is suggesting someone go to the mall and start pointing at people and scream 'Redskins!'. The response you'd get? 'What the hell is wrong with that Redskins fan?'.

Other than some politically incorrect Western movies from 50+ years ago, it has never been used as a slur.

I'm not a Neanderthal. If 'Redskins' offends a significant portion of Native Americans, I have no problem moving away from it. But they totally botched that process.
