Hair care is important. Never thought we'd have a thread dedicated to conditioners, but now that it's here I'm all for it.

No practice this week increases the gap in the superior strength and conditioning programs of top tier teams vs the Washington Redskins. We need Bubba Tyer back. We are losing in the trenches vs the better teams in the league.

Because you're WORTH it!!!

If our kicker had used Head and Shoulders he probably would have made those missed kicks last Sunday

These guys are pro athletes, not machines.

At some point, the body needs a bit of rest. Without it, even the very best athletes in the world start to break down.

Giving the guys some downtime this week will pay off in terms of better overall health in January.

There are actually studies in regards to fitness and fatigue and it's effect on performance.

As Fitness increases, so does fatigue. The goal is to be at the highest fitness level with the lowest fatigue level.

You can increase fitness for awhile, but as fatigue accumulates there is a breaking point in which, even though you are more fit, you are actually negatively effecting the performance curve.

Conversely, taking time off lowers fitness in theory. But it also reduces fatigue. Decreased fatigue with a higher fitness threshold means increased performance.

In our language: Pushing to push at all times, pedal to the metal does not always positively impact performance as some may think. It can actually hurt performance. In short, the season is a grind, and a week off doesn't hurt.

You’re a genius.

First off, it’s interesting that you believe S&C is a major problem after we upgraded from DIII level facilities to Pro-level facilities, added a nutritionist, and added vets, coaches and a GM from some of those “better teams” who would know what S&C should look like.

Secondly, it’s interesting that your complaints - perceived S&C issues, why couldn’t Forbes just be coached up?, why are we not using our bye week to our advantage?, why couldn’t we trade Forbes? - are all directly related to questioning coaching and FO operations… when we’re sitting at 8-5. With a rookie qb. After turning over a huge portion of our roster. After finishing with 4 wins last year.

Most of those “better teams” have the advantage of continuity. Continuity in coaching, in their scouting, etc. We’re functionally starting from scratch. And then of course having a late bye week, in conjunction with multiple players on our O and D lines banged up, didn’t help matters. Here’s hoping they’re in better “shape” after the bye.

Lastly, talent matters. The FO and coaches have done a yeoman’s job getting us where we are, but talent infusion is an ongoing process. We’re basically in year 1.

Do we know for a fact the better teams went hard both weeks of their bye? I’d be interested to see the teams and their schedules you are referring to.

Most teams come into the facility on Mondays after the game, then give the team Tuesday - Sunday off, then start up in earnest with the following Monday to prepare for the next game.

This gives players the first true 6 day break since the start of training camp.

Players who are undergoing treatment would continue to come in for treatment.

Could the team have practiced on Tuesday and Wednesday? Yes. But they have to give 4 consecutive days off. And you want to do that this week rather than the week of the game.

So there are rules in place.

Apart from giving guys a break not being a bad idea.

We beat Dallas during the strike season with replacement players because we were disciplined and they were not. Voluntary (yet expected by the team captains) workouts.

I mean. Ok. But I think you underestimate the value of rest.

Also, not one other team does that during the bye week.

I think comparing strike shortened season in 1982 to a bye week in 2024 is… not exactly apples to apples.

But what do I know.

That was a whole different world, brother.

Going on strike against the team to get better wages and working conditions is different from a CBA-mandated in-season break.

In fact, the in-season Bye could be considered part of the better working conditions the players went on strike to secure in the first place.

It's important that our players are in good shape. I think where this argument goes far afield is...

a. Being in great condition allows athletes to perform at their best.
b. We have lost games while not performing our best.
c. Not being in great condition is costing us games.

There is a huge gap between 'b' and 'c' that not only includes numerous possible causes of losing games (among them being a seemingly obvious one - the other team was more talented) but also the possibility that a multitude of factors are involved in determining which team wins and which one loses.

It's kind of like when fans argue 'they just didn't want it enough' as if 'wanting something badly makes it more likely one attains something'. If that were the case, Scarlett J. and I would be sipping our coffee in bed together as we speak.

Lastly, I haven't seen any evidence put forward that the team actually IS in subpar condition. At best the argument has been 'they could've had an additional practice or workout here or there'. It seems a monumental stretch to think THAT of all the factors influencing game outcomes, is going to determine things.

Another way of saying this is correlation without causation.

Or, if you want some Latin (as taught to us by Pres. Jeb Bartlet, the best president of my lifetime, “Post hoc ergo propter hoc”

(This post brought to you by the desire to add Latin to a football message board. As you were.)

Scarlett J. might be sipping her coffee in bed.

You, my fine friend, would be in bed under the care of an experienced cardiologist. ;)

We have lost 4 of 5 games in which we've held a lead. 3 of these games were in the 4th quarter when we crumbled.

Dan Campbell has the Detroit Lions willing to fight to the death if necessary to get the Lombardi - this is evidenced in their number of close wins against quality enemy teams in the clutch this year, as well as offseason preparation and strength and conditioning. The 49ers exposed them last year in the playoffs - and Campbell and his team adjusted for this year.

The Eagles - when they last won the SB had resilience and finished the season strong -winning 3 playoff games on the road. Last year, they folded late in the season. This year, they flat out punched us in the nose IN OUR FUCKING HOUSE and we DID NOTHING in the 4th quarter to stop their take over - so yes I think that's both strength and conditioning and mindset - willingness to FIGHT.

Ekelers hesitation to come back and play this year suggests why we will probably fall short of the Lombardi, this year.

Tell me what you know about Detroit’s offseason strength and conditioning program… I’ll wait. Because I doubt you know a damn thing.
