Ekelers hesitation to come back and play this year suggests why we will probably fall short of the Lombardi, this year.
Lombardi? Seriously?

Bartender, I'll have what he's having and make mine a double...

Yikes dude. Simply yikes.

This whole thread has me going ….

Tell me what you know about Detroit’s offseason strength and conditioning program… I’ll wait. Because I doubt you know a damn thing.
The proof is in how they finish games this year compared to their collapse against the 49ers. Something must have been adjusted. They win, even without key players.

What key players are they missing?

Wild to me that somebody could watch the Lions and Eagles play, and then watch us play, and think that the difference is in strength and conditioning lol

There is a massive talent gap after only one offseason with a real GM. Give it time.

Dan Campbell’s career in Detroit started 0-10-1 in his first 11 games btw.

We have lost 4 of 5 games in which we've held a lead. 3 of these games were in the 4th quarter when we crumbled.

Dan Campbell has the Detroit Lions willing to fight to the death if necessary to get the Lombardi - this is evidenced in their number of close wins against quality enemy teams in the clutch this year, as well as offseason preparation and strength and conditioning. The 49ers exposed them last year in the playoffs - and Campbell and his team adjusted for this year.

The Eagles - when they last won the SB had resilience and finished the season strong -winning 3 playoff games on the road. Last year, they folded late in the season. This year, they flat out punched us in the nose IN OUR FUCKING HOUSE and we DID NOTHING in the 4th quarter to stop their take over - so yes I think that's both strength and conditioning and mindset - willingness to FIGHT.

When an offense can't sustain drives, and the defense is on the field nearly full-time, teams sputter and fail late in games. That happened to us several times this year. This, not a lack of strength and conditioning, is the root cause of the losses you mentioned above. When our offense sustains drives we don't see the defense get gassed, and we don't collapse late. Pretty simple.

There is such a thing as too much exercise. Look it up. While you're at it, look up rhabdomyolysis.

While I applaud your enthusiasm, I think you've latched onto something that isn't necessarily an issue for this team. Like others have already said, the real issue is talent (with a little bit of bad coaching thrown in from time to time).

I think that's more of a scheme thing MassSkinsFan.

If we look at games like Chicago, we fielded a shut out in the first half. The D was rested and we had a huge time of possession advantage. Then, in the second half, the D surrenders twenty plus points and we're a Hail Mary away from losing a game we led for 59 minutes. Even against the Titans, we neutralized them and we're scoring wonderfully in the first half, but in the second half, the Titans kept scoring.

I don't think that's a strength and conditioning issue. I think it's a scheme and talent issue. I think Witt is trying to mask our deficiencies in the secondary and elsewhere and for a half he more or less can get away with it against average or below offenses, but even they after halftime figure out how to take advantage of us. I've seen games where we held the ball for over twenty minutes in the first half and yet the D still collapses in the second. That's why it's a mistake whenever Kingsbury let's his foot off the gas or calls a conservative game.

Thanks burgold for the explanation. I'm an offense guy. Ask me about what the OL is doing and I can give you an earful, but with the D my knowledge is pretty simplistic. I've seen that we do at times take a foot off the gas, and that perplexes me. I think the best teams never do that, so why would any coach?

My only question about OCs figuring out Witt's moves is: can he not adjust to their adjustments because he has less "range" to operate within due to talent issues?

I think there are others better suited to answer. My guess is that there are only so many ways to cheat codes to make a poor talent base overproduce. I'm guessing the key is pressure, variety, and creating confusion, but that's probably vague and generic enough as not to be useful.

Not that I know, but I’d put it down to 2 things.

Talent, as you mentioned, being the big one. We can’t live in cover 1, blitzing, whatever, because our corners (as a whole) can’t hold up. We can’t rely on dropping 7 into coverage because our front 4 are just ok. We can’t live in cover 2, 3 or 4 because of our run D. I’m hoping Lattimore makes a big difference, though it’s probably also unfair or maybe just overly optimistic to expect 1 dude to be the catalyst that fixes all of the above issues.

The 2nd is that we’re in year one of this defense. There’s only so much ground you can cover before you overwhelm your players. Whitt started off putting too much on their plate (and said as much - something along the lines of “I was treating this as year 3 of our install”. He subsequently dialed it back, and now he seems to be adding back slowly… but I think there’s a lot of room to grow still.

The Eagles nearly lost to Carolina, who we dominated...
