Still have not come to terms with the Murphy pick

go back and watch him in college. same thing. also the book on him coming out. not bagging on him. just stating the obvious: he's not the superior athlete sort...the numbers show it. I don't see him coming off the edge like Rak. folks here may expect better from Rak...no argument. but that's not the same thing as claiming Murphy has an equivalent or better set of native athletic talents. I'm not seeing it..thus far. Murphy in Rak's role, IMO, will not be nearly as good off the edge from a down position. I've been watching him when in games. per previous...he's not the quick athletic type or the overpowering bull rusher. he's a good addition. I believe the pairing of Kerrigan/Murphy will be less effective than Kerrigan/Rak from what I have seen thus far. it'll all boil down to money...obviously. but we shouldn't close our eyes to what is in front of us...thus far.

folks may not like Rak. he may be injured too often. he may not live up to potential. all fair criticisms. buuuuut....he has had some good sack totals. you can see him applying pressure. he has disrupted plays. sure...Murphy hasn't got a track record yet. that said...in preseason...I didn't see him applied in the same sort of rushing role play in and play out. and I think that is because he doesn't have the inherent athleticism. you can see it. anywho...time will tell.

Understood, and I would be lying to you if I had a vast history of watching Murphy play in college. I was more leaning towards his maybe LOOKING slow because he's processing instead of reacting. I do think his game will get faster as he learns, and 1 professional game isn't exactly fair to draw any real conclusions about his development as a player. I could have sworn I heard his explosiveness to the ball was his strong suit but again, I'd be lying if I claimed to be a Trent Murphy scout.

To sum it up, basicallly I don't think a 3-13 team, or any team with as many needs as we had - has the luxury of spending our very top pick on a backup player, and/or project for next year.........as that is a luxury reserved for World Champions.....but ironically, the World Champions found a solid, immediate starter in Round 2, whereas we did not. And I see something wrong with that.

fair enough! my hearsay.....and I'm no scout either...was that he made his money using what lies between his ears more than anything else. that's a valuable asset/strength. hopefully, there's enough strength/speed/quickness to compete with NFL caliber athletes with smarts providing the edge.

I like your reasoning...but would caveat that the team was also looking for d-line talent in a big way...even after the Hatcher signing. n short...youth.

He might also switch to the left, with Kerrigan manning Rak's spot.

As for the original premise, as much clamoring as we do about wanting our organization to emulate the top franchises, drafting BPA is what they all do. Gotta start somewhere. Far too early to judge this years draft class.

We're not in charge. All we can do is watch, cheer on, and hope for the best.

It's just impossible to say yet. A few things to consider:

1. Our new HC was incredibly thorough upon arriving to DC. Not only did he watch all of our games from last season, but he also watched every single practice from last year. If a guy was totally slacking off in practice, he saw it. Maybe he wasn't impressed with what he saw?

2. Maybe he strongly believes that Trent Murphy is a one-of-a-kind player. Personally, I haven't seen it, but it's wayyyy too early to tell.

3. Seattle took a shot on a fifth round prospect in the second round. Much like we did with Leribeus. That didn't work out too well for us, and the jury is still way out on Britt. He may turn out to be a bust.

4. Is it possible that the OTs that were there when we drafted were all huge reaches? I don't know. Maybe BB does. I do know that at least one of them is already being called a huge bust.

5. Based on our FO's ability to find guys like Ryan Grant, Breeland and Redd so far, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt only one week into the season. If Moses starts in week 6, and plays for the next six years, this will look like a pretty solid plan.

6. Remember how empty this roster was. Joshua Morgan was our second WR. We had holes everywhere, from CB to KR to safety to MLB. And no first round draft pick. Also recall that we got one guard in FA, spent a high pick on another guard, and used a high pick on a tackle. It's not like improving the OL wasn't a big point of emphasis.

Murphy was an "awkward" selection. I like Murphy the player. I think he has a bright future. I also think he's a good fit for the Washington Redskins. The problem with Murphy doesn't actually have anything to do with Murphy: It's timing.

For one, Redskin fans are reading the writing on the wall. Murphy's selection likely means that either Orakpo or Kerrigan won't be here come the 2015-16 season. And it's possible that neither of them are on the roster beyond that. But that's a future issue. In the present, we spent $11 million on Orakpo as well as re-signed (and subsequently cut) Rob Jackson. We had a few young guys we liked in Gabe Miller and Adrian Robinson. And of course we have Ryan Kerrigan. When you're that invested in a position, it doesn't make sense to draft an OLB.

Now, had we not re-signed Orakpo, things change. Maybe that money goes to the RT position that we were attempting to address but just couldn't get done with the resources available. At that point, drafting an OLB makes more sense.

But then, looking to the future, perhaps Murphy does ultimately make sense.

The problem still, though, is that we could have put valuable assets towards the shoring up of our offensive line. Whether in the form of our second rounder or in the form of free agent purchases. While I like the Lauvao signing, and Lichtensteiger is definitely an upgrade at center, I'm still not sold on Chester. And I'm comfortable with Polumbus... as a backup.

Murphy also falls victim to the fact that as a second rounder, he was our first selection. If we had a first, perhaps we would have went OL there and then Murphy in the second. We wouldn't have heard as much dismay towards that scenario.

Murphy is a victim of circumstance. He has a promising future with the Redskins if things go the way they appear to be. But the timing of drafting him just wasn't great for him.

welcome back, K-Dawg.

I think we re-sign Kerrigan and get a decent price for him. He doesnt have the "name" that Rak seems to be carrying in the NFL for whatever reason. Personally I think he is more reliable on the field both health and talent wise anyways.

I get the same impression, to be honest. But you never know. People pay for quality and Paul Kruger got an absurd contract... And I don't think he's as good as Kerrigan.

Time will tell I suppose.

When there is nothing worth drafting at that point do you pick OL anyways just because you're supposed to?

I still haven't come to terms with Bobby Beathard trading away next years #1 pick, to move to the top of the second round, to draft Tory Nixon.

So if the only O-Lineman on the board that fits our scheme and they like is someone they are projecting for the 4th round, were supposed to take them in the 2nd because it's a need? I dont agree with that.

its still fun to rub Browns fans' noses in it. "Yeah, your RB that screwed you helped us win one"

As far as the Murphy pick, I'm not one to get too excited over draft picks for at least 2-3 years. The idea that we would consider plugging in a rookie at either RG or RT on opening day to me is just nuts. Few rookies indeed start from day one--nor should they.

That said, the idea that we went into this season with both Chester AND Polumbus as our right-side starters still has me ... irked. I was convinced that along with drafting hopefully eventual starters, we'd do for that side of the line what we did at LG with Lavao.

My HOPE is that that's what the Skins had in mind as well--that they'd find a better option for one or both either from the young guys on the roster already or from second-tier FA--and their best laid plans simply didn't plan out. If that's the case, chalk it up to the 2-year cap-mugging we got at the hands of the collusionists.

.

Jon Jansen ?
Also, a 2nd round pick....
And started from day one, and all 18 games his rookie season including 2 playoff games.

I am interested in what OL was in the second round for us to pick that is a better choice than Murphy.
