Sproles released... Fit for us?

Antwaan Randle-El would like a word with you.

:twitch:

Oh yeah? Good, 'cause I've wanted a word with Mr. Randle-Fail for years... clown.

It might not be blocking, but adding a threat out of the backfield occupies a defender, and while he might not stack up against him, causing that defender to be paying attention to him is just as effective when used correctly.

Yeah, I don't know. Cooley, and others, last year said that no one could do anything with that blocking. It didn't matter who we put back there. It was a scheme/talent issue with the other 10 guys on the field.

So. I don't know, I realize I'm not nearly as smart as many others when it comes to that part of the game. So I'm reduced to parroting others' opinions on it.

I agree, but we also didn't utilize our RBs in the pass game, meaning MLBs could tee off on passing situations. A lot of defenses will have options for the LBs.. If the RB stays in to block, you blitz, if he breaks out of the backfield, go into coverage. When we lined up on 3rd and 6, there was no threat of the back coming out of the backfield, therefore there was an open pass rush.

On a club rebuilding from 3-13 a third down back is a luxury item, like a Mercedes hood ornament on a Kia.

I don't like the idea of trading young for old. If we need to replace Helu, which I don't think we do, we shouldn't replace him with a 31 year old.

The only reason this signing makes any kind of sense is if we're signing him to return punts and kicks. We do need that, and if we get a third down back out of it ... ok I guess. I hope he comes cheap ...

Most teams go cheap and have fifth or sixth round receivers returning kicks.

With limited resources, we need to stay clear of spending a lot of money on returners, punters, or other specialists.

We need to go young and cheap.

Maybe we just had the wrong guy making the picks.

Hankerson and Robinson are not impressing me that much.

Perhaps when Gruden actually listens to Campbell we will get better quality prospects in here.

The last time I checked Hester, Sproles, etc don't have any rings.

Hester had one of the best seasons ever for a returner a couple of years ago and it wasn't enough.

Would I like to find a great young return man? Of course.

But ultimately we don't need one to win a championship.

No, what I am saying is you can win a Super Bowl without a pro bowl returner, but try to do it now without a quality qb or rush men on defense.

That is where you need to start.

Specialists are like the icing on the cake, they are not the foundation.

Agreed. And if the guy us on his rookie deal and you can get value from the position fine.

But I would not spend $2M or $3M to bring Sproles here to do that now.

Maybe we need that player in 2015-16 when we have the rest of the team rebuilt to contend.

Actually, Sproles has definitely lost a step or two. He's not the same back the Saints signed a few years ago.

Sproles had 71 catches last year... if im not mistaken, Garcon is the only player on the team that even came close to that number

Helu had 49 or 50 catches playing with Grossman and Beck in 2011.

Are we so sure he can't fill that role going forward?

That's funny, on another thread people were downing me because I didn't want to franchise Orakpo!

Now, I'm the one that doesn't want to bring in any new players.......

I think this team does in fact need roster changeover at many spots.

RG, WR, ILB, DE, S, CB........RT could use an upgrade as well.

But at a spot like a third down specialist I look at a 25 year old player still on his rookie deal who has good hands and speed in Helu and thinks we should see what he can do in 2014 before we bring in a more expensive veteran perhaps next year.

I'm with you, but who says Sproles will be more expensive? Helu is listed to make $1.4 this year, if we can get Sproles for $1.5 per for 2 years, and get production out of the guy, how can we not at least take a look... I don't want to pay him a lot... never have.

I've seen where 10 or more teams are interested in Sproles. Doubtful that he signs on the cheap.

I don't even want him at Vet min. That's money and a Roster spot that can be spent on another area of need which this team is full of. Go find another DB or O lineman for depth if it's money of that range.

But then you're spending $2.9M on a position you could be spending less on (backup RB). Unless your plan is to cut/trade Helu?

Deal Helu if you can get something worthwhile for him.
