So when will the Redskins Logo get back on the helmet and playing field?

I don't think that's 'knowable' as the NFL doesn't release it's financial info, at least not at a detailed level. Here's an interesting article on how the NFL generates most of it's revenue.

I did see a note in there that it's estimated the Green Bay Packers (a team for which financials are public) made $236 million in 2023 in 'local sales' (that's money the franchise makes for itself outside of their share of NFL profits for things like ticket sales, concessions, swag sales, etc...). It's estimated each NFL team got another $374 million from the league. The author of this article estimates that the NFL as a whole brought in approximately $12 Billion in 2022. So you are talking about shockingly high profits. How much of that comes from things that would be associated with a rebrand is anyone's guess. But I think it underlines just how diffucult an argument 'rebranding is too expensive' might be to make.

There was a tremendous amount of pressure on Snyder in the end. The allegations of sexual improprieties (both inside the org and by Snyder himself) were also huge factors. I am not arguing that fan outcry in and of itself would ever have been enough to force a Snyder sale, but it was part of the equation. We (as a site) were very loud and obnoxious that he had to go, including having Megan Imbert on our podcast a number of times to tell her and others stories.

But the name change possibility is also a much easier proposition... despite folks that throw out how 'expensive' a rebranding would be, we're probably talking less than a million dollars and in NFL terms, that is chump change. If the Harris Group can make fans happier, why wouldn't they want to do it? The league, in the abstract, probably always prefers the status quo and wouldn't be chomping at the bit for another change - but I doubt they would put up serious opposition to one and ultimately I'm not even 100% sure they could prevent Harris from doing it even if they preferred he'd not. A name change is nowhere near the challenge than pushing out and replacing an NFL owner is....
I believe Megan Inbert was the main reason Snyder is gone. We agree the public pressure on Snyder was immense at the end. But it had been immense before and the league responded by covering up the Wilkinson report, claiming it was only a verbal report was downright insulting. They also rewarded Snyder by giving him a pass on the rules so he could buy out his partners. The sexual allegations and toxic workplace were made clear in that first report but that was not enough to get the other owners to move, in fact Snyder was rewarded despite what they pretend. It was the constant pressure, resulting in the Commish being forced to testify before Congress, that lead to the Mary Jo White Report which confirmed Josh Friedman's claim of financial cheating.

I firmly believe if the White Report was just more reporting of what was known, the hostile workplace, etc, then Snyder would have survived just as he survived the Wilkinson Report. It was only because of the financial cheating, that was confirmed by White, did the owners chose to act and that's pretty disgusting.

I feel the often overlooked factor was that Dan was house poor, or yacht poor if you prefer. He couldn’t find enough coin in his virgin leather couch cushions to even be modestly competitive in the League. Combine that with the unyielding pressure from the fans, the governmental authorities, and the NFL itself and it became clear there was only one way out…to receive a king’s ransom that he only deserved through no personal efforts.

I think these are all hard to separate...because any of them without the others, probably are just footnotes. The cheerleader tape and Snyder settling with those women, the financial things, the pressure applied by the minority owners/sponsors which resulted in the bad branding...there was just way too much smoke to continue to ignore.

They may have not ignored all the smoke but they chose to overlook it for a long time. That became obvious when the Wilkerson report revealed basically everything that the White Report reported. It was only because of public pressure, both from fans and lawmakers, that a 2nd more transparent report was even performed.

Again the one owner saying of the 2nd report "if the financial stuff was confirmed that was the final nail" is very revealing to me. Had it been just more of the same reports, with the financial stuff unconfirmed, the owners had shown they were willing to overlook all the smoke.

Yeah, Dan would still be here if he didn’t steal from the other owners. He could screw us fans and team every which way, but billionaires don’t like it when you mess with their money. Thinking about it this way actually leaves a sickening taste in my mouth.

You're probably right...which is very sad considering the violation of privacy committed against those girls.

They also rewarded Snyder by giving him a pass on the rules so he could buy out his partners.

The “pass” they gave Snyder on accumulating debt in order to buy out his minority share partners was, imo, a calculated investment into his future sale of the team. Rather than a reward to him, it was a “move” (even though it did make him a ton of money when he sold). Stick with me:

They knew he’d be burdened with debt as interest rates skyrocketed, knew he wasn’t making what he used to from the Franchise, and still let him buy out his minority share partners. They did that with an eye for the long game imo, bc they knew he’d suffer servicing those loans and start to go broke in terms of liquid wealth. It just happened faster than anticipated and his wife finally urging him to just sell sealed the deal.

Asset rich, cash poor will get you when you’re at that level of wealth but have no other real successful business interests or revenue-generating property…Snyder was kind of uniquely leveraged bc he was the rare billionaire with like no diversity in his portfolio, all his net worth came from the team and he borrowed against that to live, seemingly. The other 31 owners knew that and took advantage of him by “allowing” him to take on all that extra debt. At that point, $6 billion dollars to your name starts looking really, really good.

I think they were done with Snyder but didn’t want to set a precedent that a fellow owner could be voted out without their consent. So they instead played a smart financial game to encourage him to sell. And it worked. They’ll never talk about it though. I don’t think it’s particularly conspiracy minded to believe this on my part but maybe it is.

I do agree that finding out he was financially jerking around the entire league and stealing money was the final straw, though. If their earlier move to let him become debt-ridden was the long play, they would have invented a short play quickly once that was discovered. But they didn’t need to, in the end. And they got to pretend they didn’t kick him out.

I did consider reducing the ownership to one owner would make it easier to remove him. But they showed after the Wilkerson report that they had no intentions of doing that. Without the continued pressure that resulted in a 2nd investigation he would still own the Washington Commanders. He made it clear that he loved the team and wanted to pass it along to his kids, we know it was his identiy. He would never have been convinced to sell unless he was forced to sell or be voted out.

Sure he was leveraged but if you are going to have all of your money in one asset what better asset than an NFL franchise that is an incredible money making machine? Being cash poor would not have convinced him to sell the team IMO, it would have just hindered his ability to field a good team with good facilities but that's nothing new.

No I will never stop believing the confirmation of the financial rigging in the White Report was the reason the owners finally had enough votes. Before that report they simply did not have the votes to force him out, they knew all about the hostile workplace and all the rest but took no action. The league just wanted all of this just go away and they thought they had that when they issued a BS "punishment" after the first report. They had no intentions of voting him or forcing him out, they never had the votes. And because of that he would have never agreed to sell the team IMO.

We’ll never know because they never voted. Because (imo) his poor financial situation seemingly forced him to sell, and his family had enough.

We really have no evidence that in the end his fellow owners made it clear he’d be voted out at all—like you said, they skipped every opportunity to do that after every previous scandal.

You could be right that the final one may have ended up being the one. We don’t know.

There’s really no evidence that he was more afraid that he’d get voted out by his fellow owners after the financial improprieties came to light than before. So either of us could be right, really. It’s possible they let him know that if he didn’t begin the process to sell, that they’d actually hold the vote and force him out. But I tend to think he’s petty enough to want to force them to actually do it, vote, and set that precedent within the group, if that had been the case. As a final “F you”. That’s why I think it was purely due to the debt and his family that he finally sold, personally. I think his fellow owners played “nice” to the end and couldn’t believe their plan worked.

Agree we will never really know. But what we do know is Daniel Snyder did not want to sell the team and would have only agreed to do it if he was forced to. And we do know that the owners did not have the votes after the Wilkerson Report. Snyder was defiant and said he would never sell throughout it all and after the first report and who would question that? We all know how important it was to him to be the owner of this team. He was just as leveraged and cash poor back then as he was after he started the process to sell. .

What changed? I can look at the quote from one of the owners who said (paraphrasing) "if the financial stuff is found to be true that's the final nail". Well the financial stuff was confirmed but only after Mary Jo White released her report to the league. There was a reason they kept it under wraps until literally the day after the sale was final. Becuase it was incredibly damaging and pretty much confirmed what was in the Wilkerson Report with regard to the finances. Owners say they care about a safe workplace but what they really care about is money. And the financial cheating of the other owners I believe was enough to acquire the votes needed. But we all know the owners had no intentions of setting the precedent of voting out one of their own. So they forced him to sell instead IMO but only after the White Report.

Wash everything Snyder out of our Franchise. Name logo uniforms stadium etc. It's like getting an ugly divorce and completely cleaning house for your own sanity as well as resetting up your new future
