I used to yell all the time on message boards "SELL THE TEAM". Now it's "CHANGE THE NAME".

For me now it's just Washington and I don't live anywhere close so if I had been able to decide on another team I would have switched by now.

It's just too bad that the imbecile didn't sell the team before he forced a name that no one approved of on the already pissed off fanbase.

I was totally settled on the reality of “Commanders” until Snyder sold the team. For me that was a game changer. New ownership means there is a chance for something better. If we “let it go” the conversation dies off and we are stuck with Commanders when maybe there was a chance for something better. With that said, I’m also prepared for the possibility it doesn’t change. I will deal with whatever needs to be dealt with once I know where the issue falls permanently.

I will say one last thing regarding the 'get over it, it's not going to change again' crowd. For years, I heard and was told 'Snyder will never sell the team'. Fans that suggested pressure could force him out were called stupid and unrealistic and that they were annoying because it was never going to happen. Those people were dead wrong. And fan outcry played a major role in Snyder finally departing, obviously along with many other factors that were concerning to the NFL. I have been told that Tanya Snyder getting incessantly and loudly booed multiple times in public with chants of 'Sell the team!' played more of a role in Snyder finally saying 'enough' than anyone would guess. Had it not been for the fanbase finally turning enmasse against the owner, I think he'd still be here, screwing things up. The name change issue feels similar to me, in that if fans 'shut up' and acquiesce to what most feel is an entirely unsatisfactory name, we may be stuck with it forever. On the other hand, if fans continue to express their dissatisfaction with it every chance they get, I believe the Harris group will eventually do something about it.

Obviously, a name fans are lukewarm at best about is nowhere near the level of awful that Dan Snyder represented. But it's not good, and the franchise can do better. So I'll continue to not 'shut up'. I won't 'get over it' until I have to - and that point will come when Josh Harris and Company say 'we are going forward as the Commanders and have no plans to change the name again'. At that point, I'll accept it and carry on - because that's what intelligent humans have to do. We are not yet at that point. So...

I believe it was chosen because the trademarks were easily obtainable with relatively limited resources and the name does make sense for D.C. (that doesn’t mean it’s a GOOD name)

The San Antonio Commanders provided an easy out that wouldn’t have involved a lot of legal wrangling. Again, I think the choice was all about dollars and cents.

Interesting read, I learned there was an XFL team named the Brahams. As bad as Commanders is I guess it could have been worse.

All I will add is this…over the past 3 days out and about in New Orleans I have crossed paths with about 1000 Washington fans who have traveled here for today’s game. They are everywhere. Of all ages and of all demographics. A solid and consistent 85% are decked out in Redskins gear. Harris and others of consequence attend road games and there is no way that they can be oblivious to it. That is in no way saying that Redskins could, should, or would return but it does highlight that there is almost no appetite for adopting the current name.

This is probably the best post I've seen from posters promoting the name change back to Redskins. I think it's clear that the only reason Snyder is gone is the reaction and pressure from the fanbase who forced Goodell to do another more transparent investigation.

But I believe this is different. I firmly believe the reason Daniel Snyder sold the team was the Mary Jo White Report. An owner was quoted as saying "if the financial stuff is true that's the final nail" and the report sustained the allegations from Friedman about the finances. So Snyder was forced to sell the team or he would be the first owner to be voted out primarily because he was cheating the other owners, the sexual harrassment was known and that was not enough for the owners to move so it was about the money IMO. That's different than simply fan pushback.

And as much as I hated to see it go I think the time is passed for us to be using a name which describes a group of people by the color of their skin. I don't believe they will or should go back to that.

There was a tremendous amount of pressure on Snyder in the end. The allegations of sexual improprieties (both inside the org and by Snyder himself) were also huge factors. I am not arguing that fan outcry in and of itself would ever have been enough to force a Snyder sale, but it was part of the equation. We (as a site) were very loud and obnoxious that he had to go, including having Megan Imbert on our podcast a number of times to tell her and others stories.

But the name change possibility is also a much easier proposition... despite folks that throw out how 'expensive' a rebranding would be, we're probably talking less than a million dollars and in NFL terms, that is chump change. If the Harris Group can make fans happier, why wouldn't they want to do it? The league, in the abstract, probably always prefers the status quo and wouldn't be chomping at the bit for another change - but I doubt they would put up serious opposition to one and ultimately I'm not even 100% sure they could prevent Harris from doing it even if they preferred he'd not. A name change is nowhere near the challenge than pushing out and replacing an NFL owner is....

When you can audibly hear fans singing Hail to the Redskins after a score over the TV broadcast, that should say a lot of about the dissatisfaction with the name. I wish someone would pose the question to Harris about how he feels when he hears that.

I don't think there's any doubt most fans didn't feel the name should have been changed, and hated that it was. Probably a majority of fans would be thrilled for that decision to be reversed - here and everywhere. Look at the interest in this thread years after the change. The name matters to fans.

Oh if folks had backbone like they used to have, the Redskins would come back but societal changes are producing soft men everyday with no will to stand up to foolishness.

The younger generations were raised that sensitivity to certain things is important. I don't think it's necessarily 'soft', it's just a different perspective. And I'm betting every generation looks at the one coming up behind it with eyerolls to a certain extent.
