My brothers and I called him Chip Loh-misser.

I wonder if they'll bring in Justin Toucher...Tucker. That was an odd autocorrect.

Wow, San Fran spent a 3rd round pick on Moody in 2023. I think Adam Peters was there for that. He had an impressive college career at Michigan for sure.

Moody is young and has upside. He was a high draft pick who had a strong rookie season, he has made some game winners, he has Super Bowl experience, and he went 8 for 9 with Chicago this season. He has hit a few 55+ yard kicks, including a long of 57 yards in the pros and 59 yards in college, plus a 55 yard kick in the Super Bowl. They say he hits from 65+ in practice, so he has range.

However he may well be worse than Gay. He is a 76% kicker for his career including an awful 24 for 34 in 2024, and he is only 6 for 12 from 50+. He was cut from San Fran after going 1 for 3 earlier this year with both misses coming from inside the 40. So I do have concerns.

Hopefully he develops into a great kicker for us. I wouldn’t bet on it given his history and ours, but the potential is there.

Moody is fine.... as long as the kicks are less than 30yds, no wind, straight on, and no D blocking - perfect

Think positive my friend!

He's better... Yay, we suck less

He's worse... Yay, we get a better draft pick
So he sucks better, great!

Deebo's hit was impressive slapped the long snapper and the kicker in one swipe for missing a FG

Wait....does this mean we don't have Game Gay anymore?

It does shorten the field so we should be going for 4th downs more.

Just hope this isn't AP trying to prove one of his past draft misses was not a miss. I hope he was a Lynch guy...3rd round kicker, dang someone thought the world of him

Pretty wild they waited to cut him until after the season was lost.
I don't mind the patience--call it the David Akers effect. How many times have kickers looked like utter shit here to go on and be good elsewhere? So often, kickers just "figure it out" and become automatic. I liken it to relievers in baseball.

FGs weren't going to help us in most of those games. I just think that when he struggled - they looked at his past - he had similar struggles before. It wasn't fixed. Someone here - I think skinsinparadise maybe - has commented that one of the qualities that makes Roseman great at what he does is he admits mistakes quickly and cuts bait/moves on (makes lemonade out of his lemons). I think they could have done that in this case not based on this year alone (too little data), but the data from Gay's last couple of years kind of mirrors what we saw. Struggles in 45/50+ range. That isn't new. So if they cut him based on that (which it appears)... nothing changed.

So this is, to me, an admit of a mistake, and yes I agree with you - in that lens, it looks a little late. This has been a season long issue that has been in his history as I recall.

I think even coaches who love and value Special Teams struggle with understanding the esoteric trick of developing kickers. I think they’re seen as a necessary evil. It’s brutal and kind of random, and the best thing you can do is have such a solid team that the world is more rarely on their shoulders, giving them the chance to develop the mental fortitude and belief in themselves to handle it when the world IS on their shoulders. And then you hope to get lucky. Many kickers, you pull the plug on them and then they figure it out mentally when they’ve got nothing to lose and they’re better elsewhere and put together decent careers. So being “first in” on a talented kicker with a higher draft pick seems like an awful idea. Because simply being talented is only part of the equation, they need to toughen up their mental game and find some inner belief in themselves not necessarily tied to making 50+ yard FG’s. Then they can make the FG’s? Idk like I said, it’s esoteric. It probably helps having a team good enough that the kicker feels it’s not all on them and their measly 3 points, while they’re developing.

It’s a sports psychology nightmare and a game of chance, but your chances are enhanced if you have a good squad who doesn’t *need* the kicker while they figure it out. So thinking if you just cross your fingers, walk on eggshells, and outwardly express belief that a guy might figure it out and become consistent…it’s not the most unbelievable idea.

All that said, Gay was obviously bad and should’ve been cut six weeks ago though.

Moody when he misses a kick, and people get mad:

99 posts on a kicker. 🤣

I’ve got 99 problems and Matt Gay ain’t (any longer) one.
