Looks like Moody will have a 6 game extended tryout. But if he doesn't work out we are looking at having a top 5 pick which should mean we should have a good shot of drafting a blue chip kicker in the first round.

I don’t think so. Gay is an 84% kicker for his career and has only missed one kick inside the 50 in the past two seasons. So I can see why they gave him a chance.

However, he has clearly developed a pattern of missing from 50+ yards—he is only 7 for 18 from that range over the past two seasons, and that has cost us 2 or 3 games this year (Miami, Chicago, Green Bay). I put part of that on the coaches for asking him to kick outside his effective range, but ultimately an NFL kicker is expected to make those at least 60-70% of the time (the league average from 50+ is 71% this year), so I agree with the decision to cut him.

Yeah, he has the ability but I meant his confidence in himself was obviously shattered weeks ago and this roster is not good this year, so every point is crucial. Which is not a good situation to put a head case kicker in unfortunately. He’d do much better and would have had more time to settle in if we were scoring at will like we were at times last year. The stakes were immediately too high for where his self belief seems to be this year, no margin for error which is a lot to put on a mediocre but able player at that position

I don’t think Moody shortens the field at all. While it is true he is only 50% from 50+ yards so far in his career, he clearly has the leg—he has a long of 59 in college and 57 in the NFL, and he reportedly hits from 65+ in practice.

His problem has been consistency. He looked great as a rookie, when he hit 84% of his field goals including a good showing in the Super Bowl (made from 53, 55, and in overtime). However he also missed 3 kicks in those playoffs, slumped badly his sophomore season when he barely made 70% of his kicks, and opened this year with a stinker that got him cut. But then he looked great for Chicago, whose fans wanted to keep him over their starter.

Given the roller coaster ride the first few years of his career have been, I can understand the skepticism, you really need consistency at the position. But he is young and has potential to be great. He had an impressive career at Michigan, so I understand why the 49ers spent a top 100 pick on him, and I think it is a smart to see if he can realize that potential for us by developing him in a lost season—it is a low cost high upside move.

Most of what you just said can apply to Gay. Big leg, but inconsistent. Not great from 50+. Has potential, but hasn't put it together.

Moody is a sideways move. Hopefully he figures it out, but if you look at recent performance, he's not any better than Gay has been. He's young I suppose, so maybe he can figure it out and give us stability at the position.

Right, I think Moody being 6 years younger and only in his third season makes a difference, there is a better chance he develops. His college career and rookie season showed a lot of promise.
 
In about 5 months we all will be thanking Gay for the top 5 draft pick.

We might have been 4-2 after the Bears game and 5-6 right now, still going nowhere though.
 
The kicking game here is becoming as absurd as it was under Spurrier and others where we had 5 or 6 kickers over 16 games and somehow managed to come up with guys that couldn't execute at the NFL level.

Seibert? He was notoriously not dependable past 40. 25/32 for his career from 40-49 and 4/11 50+. He was perfect inside 50 for us but 2/5 50+. In this day and age, you need a guy who will very rarely miss XPs and inside 50 but also give you a 2/3 chance to from 50+ with a range going out to high 50s minimum. Wright hasn't missed inside 50 since 2022 and is 7/11 for his career from 50+ with a career long of 59.

Wright will get cut again once Fairbairn comes back in the next week or two. He's probably the guy they look at if Moody falters in his 2-3 game tryout

I liked Seibert well enough. My two memories of him are when he set the team record with 7 field goals in a game, and when he missed the game tying extra point against Dallas.

I think his hip injury did him in. Earlier this year, he told his hometown paper he is retired:

Seibert had a notable NFL career, making 72 of 86 field-goal attempts (83.7 percent). Just last year, he kicked a career-long 55-yarder for the Commanders as part of a season in which he was successful on 27 of 30 attempts and finished with 103 points.

But injuries to his groin and hips persisted to the point where Seibert didn’t think he could perform to the standard he set for himself.

“I didn’t want to have to take the pills and keep getting the shots anymore,” Seibert said.

Asked if he would entertain thoughts of a comeback if his right leg started feeling perfect again, Seibert was succinct.

“No, I think this is really it. Yeah, sure, it’s a little bit bittersweet, not being able to maybe have a longer career, but I have no regrets and am just looking forward to a new life now,” Seibert said.
