Redskins sign Billy Cundiff

The irony is that Redskins fans were calling for Gano's head throughout 2010 when he was the worst percentage kicker in the conference and last season where missed FGs spelled losses in 2 or 3 contests.

Now some are lauding him as a hero that was let go too soon before he could show us what to do.

This is revisionist history.

Cundiff had a 2010 season that garnered him all-pro honors and he has been solid over time.

Rackers was cut twice last year and again this season by the Redskins. At 36, are you remembering the player with the booming leg that he was at 27 or are you recalling the guy that was on the field last season? :)

And there were also people calling for Cooley and Moss to be traded.

Now they are 'rocks' of the franchise and Cooley is being eulogized.

And are you remembering Cundiff's 2010 season, or his miss in the playoffs? No one is saying Gano is the second coming of Vinatieri, just that Cundiff is a complete unknown. And yes, I mean COMPLETE. Dude just lost the whole season for his Super Bowl contending team. You think that kind of a miss doesn't weigh on you a little?

No one is hoping more than me that a change in scenery will revitalize Cundiff and help get his head on straight. My concern is simply that kickers seem to be rather fragile, mentally.

And yeah, we're eulogizing Cooley. He was a fan favorite for a variety of reasons, not all of them on the field. Sue us.

It's.A.Kicker.

Surprising, but Gano was hardly ' Mr. Reliable'. If we are going to be a winning franchise, it will be because we aren't relying on whether our kicker is an 'A', 'B', or 'C' player.

Agreed totally.

While people want to point the finger at Cundiff for missing a perceived chip shot in the final seconds of the AFC Championship, the fact of the matter is that if Lee Evans hangs onto a well thrown ball in the endzone two players earlier, the Ravens have the lead and likely are headed to the Super Bowl.

For every missed kick from Cundiff or any other pro kicker that leads to disappointment, there are always 2 or 3 other plays that had they been made, the landscape of the game could have totally been changed in the loser's favour.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see Gano develop and grow into the position, and be our kicker here for years to come. It would have been a nice feel-good story. The fact of the matter is that he's had every opportunity to nail down the position over the past few years, but has done little to inspire confidence consistently. Honestly, how many times has the guy lined up for a field goal and you were sitting there saying with complete confidence that he was going to hit it? I can probably count on one hand the times I've done that with Graham.

At a time when the team appears to be serious about starting to compete and create a winning attitude, it's imperative that we have some consistency from our kicker, and that he can give a relatively young team a bit of a jump start during in-game situations. Maybe the experience of a Cundiff pays dividends in that area more so than a guy like Gano who still appears to be learning on the fly.

BT, Cundiff hasn't been solid over time. His career % isn't impressive. He's been let go of a ton of teams. And he can't make a kick over 50 yards.

That isn't even mentioning his chip shot disaster last season.

The Ravens just chose an undrafted rookie over him.

We did the exact opposite. We chose Cundiff over a guy who tied the franchise record last year for the most FGs made over 50 yards in a season. Franchise record!

He also won 3? games for us in overtime two years ago. That's clutch. He's also younger, and is the only person to ever be named the MVP of a college bowl game....as a punter.

And how many TD's has Gano saved, by tackling opposing players on kickoffs?

I'm all for upgrading anyone on our team. I just don't see how this is an upgrade. On top of it, what was the rush to cut Gano? Why not keep him for another week, and let Cundiff kick tomorrow night, just to make sure that the Ravens don't know more than we do?

What if Cundiff goes 0-3 tomorrow night? What was the rush?

Cundiff was released by the Ravens on Sunday in a surprise move after undrafted rookie Justin Tucker outperformed him in camp. Clearly, the Redskins think the Ravens made a mistake, as they raced to sign him and cut both of the guys who'd been kicking for them all summer. The surprise part of today's move is the cutting of Gano, who hasn't been the most reliable of kickers but has a strong leg and might have been able to win a competition with Cundiff if given the chance. I mean, Justin Tucker did...

Let's give a warm welcome to the Redskins' newest "Spineless Choke Artist".....

Some quotes from the Ravens forum

Good riddance. He really showed his true colors in recent weeks, no wonder he's such a spineless choke artist

Good riddence

It'll be nice to be able to attempt 50+ FG's now instead of having to punt it.
^^^^^^
OUCH !!

In response that quote....

Agreed 100% I think Ravens even punted instead of trying a 49 yard FG last year

Bet you Cundiff doesn't play the full season.

If it's not true, it's the meanest joke ever.

Cundiff's post game comments after not playing Thursday sealed his fate.

And then he went and became quite the jerk in the media recently, just from having a competition with someone. Billy didn't even have the "class" to acknowledge Justin at all, and said it was only a competition with himself.

He's also injured ? Did anyone know this ?

Yes, Billy you will be remembered for the kick (sadly). But you were a good but injured kicker.

Cundiff wasn't that good . His career stats on field goal success are average at best

I wasn't particularly favoring Billy or Justin throughout the battle until Billy had that interview and showed what he was about good riddance take your services elsewhere

Actually, Billy's "it's a competition with myself" comments were before the Jags game. He just got a little more perturbed after that game. You can call him classy all you want, and sure he was. But as soon as he has some competition, he changes.

I for one am glad he is gone. He was great in 2010 but to be truthful that was the only good season of his career. Other than his extended stay with the Cowboys and 3 years with us he has been a journeyman. Like it or not he choked last year as did Lee Evans and it cost us a Super Bowl appearance.

The difference between Justin and billy are

Billy: man I hope I don't miss this kick!

Justin: I'm gonna go out there and nail this sob like a baus

That's just from the first 5 pages. You can read on, yourself :)

why?

ratbird fans are still bitter from him missing that clutch kick. its not going to be a fond farewell for him.

To be expected. Remember our outrage when Suisham missed the kick against the Saints?

Just hoping we don't regret this move.

As others have mentioned...if you put your focus on kickoffs instead of 50+ yard field goals its Gano who looks incompetent, not Cundiff. Maybe the coaches view that as more critical? The stuff about 1 missed playoff kick strike me as silly ...Gano hasn't had to prove himself in that scenario, has he? And no matter what kind of a player a guy is, he's going to get demonized after missing that kick. I'll also add that this coaching staff has seen Gano kick about a million times more than we have - that might be relevant in the overall assessment. Finally, I'll point out that on a team that won a grand total of 5 wins last year, there probably aren't too many players we can't live without - certainly the release of Cooley and Gano should not rock our psyches. I liked both guys but I will say I'm glad if the coaches felt these were the right moves, that they didn't let fan feelings drive personnel decisions, including this fan's.

Ah, the myth of the 55 yard FG.

I want to see everything from 30 to 48 made and that will equate to victories at the end of the season.

I have read through this thread sparingly...what do we do if Cundiff goes 1 for 4 tonight and misses a PAT?

We go nuts and cry, piss, moan and throw ourselves off of cliffs while blaming Shanahan....

It's a conspiracy.

The Shanahans, Allens, and Snyders got a deal with all the HDTV and remote control manufacturers, where the Skins Front Office agrees to continually bring in inept kickers who they know will fail miserably, resulting in angry Skins fans tossing their remotes and throwing objects at the TV screen, to where remotes and TV's get replaced by the hundreds of thousands, and the Skins' Front Office gets kickbacks from those TV and Remote manufacturers

3 for 4 with a long of 39 & a miss from 46 yards. About what we expected. Kicked a few touchbacks as well.

Very happy with Cundiff's kickoffs. Not happy about the miss. Not because it's Cundiff but because it's a miss. I would have been unhappy if Gano had missed a 46 yarder as well. Points have been at a premium the past several years and I don't like NOT getting them.

Can someone tell me why we brought back Crompton and wasted a roster spot on him for garbage time play, when we could have played Rex ?

this has to be the reason

Banks would have returned all of Cundiff's KO's, except the one that hit the crossbar. He did ok for his first outing.

I'll still have to cross my fingers for a while on kicks.

Can't change that.

Because Rex's roster spot is secured (to the chagrin of many, I'm sure). No need to play him.
