Redskins sign Billy Cundiff

I'm not sure I buy into the theory that those blocked kicks were mostly Gano's fault.
He didn't have any blocked kicks that I'm aware of, prior to last year. He only seemed to have them when our O-line turned into a patchwork of practical walk-ons in 2011.
Also, I seem to remember the line being pancaked on at least some of those blocked kicks.
So, I with-hold judgment against him on those.
 
Trotter had the same kind of knee issues that Kelly had. He also had a poor attitude which was exacerbated by an incompetent staff lead by Spurrier he didn't respect.

Shanahan is true to his rep. You often don't know what is going to happen.

Gano and the rest of us thought he had made it when Rackers was released.

Instead Mike was simply looking for a bit younger vet with a stronger leg to come available.

Evidently his plan all along was to go in another direction.

That's why all those that think Banks is safe because of that one return should think again.

Damn. That's only 7% less than Billy the Kid made from 49 and in over the last 2 years. ;)

Again, I'm not so much trying to sell the idea of Cundiff, but all things being equal, the only thing I see Gano doing better is hitting a few bombs. On FG% inside the 50, and on kickoffs, Cundiff grades out higher. And frankly, I value them higher.

If not for the one miss last season against NE, he's a Pro Bowl favorite on a title contender. Only question to me is whether or not that miss screwed him up for life. Actually, that's the question both the Ravens AND Redskins are gambling on....
 
Kicker has been a weak point here like qb for decades.

Nice to see legit moves made at both positions.

Well, considering that seemingly 90% of the discussion in this thread that criticizes Gano, is about his blocked kicks, and not his kick-offs, I'd say that the O-line's play, or lack there-of on the kicks, is pretty darn relevant in the discussion.
 
My only problem with this move is that I had the feeling Gano's game was on the upswing and he was on the verge of nailing the job down here long term. Cundiff is a good bit older so likely won't be able to keep the job for the 5 to 10 years I was hoping to get out of Gano. I am truly tired of kicker being as big a revolving door as QB here. If we get 5 good years out of Cundiff I'll be thrilled but I can't help but think we are all going to be watching Gano in the years to come and wishing we had kept him a la a gentlemen named Ackers.
 
Really? Go back and watch the film of 2010 when he was the worst kicker percentage-wise in the NFC.

Even better, that Bleacher Report article ranked our old friend Shaun "Swishy" Suisham at #31.-no regrets on letting him depart. :)
 
got to remember tha game ,that miss that cundiff had could've been made ,if the coach takes a time out instead of rushing him on the feild !could've happened to any pro bowl kicker ! i dont like the move at all, but time will tell..

Gano was one of the last of the Vinny holdovers.

Lots of talent he left us to build with.

Let's hope this isn't repeat of getting rid of Campbell, and bringing in McFlabb.

Keeping Campbell was the smart move. But, Mikey knows QB's.
 
An incredibly stupid move. Cundiff was beaten in camp.....so we sign him.

Not only did we lose a young kicker, but we just lost a great backup punter too. And a great tackler, which unfortunately, is a necessity when Danny Smith is the ST coach.
 
I dunno McD5 - I think that's overstating it quite a bit. 'Young kickers' are a dime a dozen. I would've preferred we kept Gano just for consistency's sake (the teams, not Gano's :)), but I'd be willing to bet he doesn't turn into David Akers. And was Cundiff really 'beat out' in camp, or was the team determined to find his replacement after his season-killing miss? I honestly don't know. But on paper, I think it's a coin toss as to who the better kicker is, Gano or Cundiff. I refuse to get worked up over a kicker either way.
 
I would take either Rackers or Gano over Cundiff. We'll just have to hope that this turns out to be a great decision.
 
The irony is that Redskins fans were calling for Gano's head throughout 2010 when he was the worst percentage kicker in the conference and last season where missed FGs spelled losses in 2 or 3 contests.

Now some are lauding him as a hero that was let go too soon before he could show us what to do.

This is revisionist history.

Cundiff had a 2010 season that garnered him all-pro honors and he has been solid over time.

Rackers was cut twice last year and again this season by the Redskins. At 36, are you remembering the player with the booming leg that he was at 27 or are you recalling the guy that was on the field last season? :)

And there were also people calling for Cooley and Moss to be traded.

Now they are 'rocks' of the franchise and Cooley is being eulogized.
 
It's rare that I'm one of the 'voices of reason', but today, I definitely think I'm more level-headed than most. Don't worry, it won't last :)
