Redskins Get #2 Pick!

The cost only matters if he busts. Otherwise it is a bargain.

The price is toe-curlingly high, and a month or so ago I thought three first-rounders would have been too much. But I think the Redskins had to do it. Look around the league. Teams that get quarterback right are set for a decade. They are playoff teams, almost guaranteed, every single year. They have far fewer worries at draft time, and their offseasons are far less stressful and scrutinized. Teams that miss on quarterback are miserable, lost and confused, perpetually reaching for ill-fitting solutions and facing the same insurmountable problems year in and year out. <Steve-Sound like anyone you know>

If the Redskins really think Griffin is the guy to fix all of that for them, they were right to do whatever it took to get him. Now, it's on him to justify that price and on them to build the team around him that puts him in position to make this deal look good

Stevenaa beat me to it. That's the article that echos my thoughts. Pretty much exactly.

Sorry for quoting a pic, but I love this.

I'm not impressed with our organizations's negotiating skills. That extra 2nd brings back memories of Vinny. Even he wouldn't have paid more than Bruce and Shanny just did. A few thoughts:

1. I pray to God that we had the intelligence, yet strongly doubt, to make this exact same offer to the Saints for 5,000 yard Drew Brees. I really don't believe that Shanny is intelligent enough to have even thought about that. One of the greatest QBs in the league is a much better investment than a guy who has yet to take a single snap in the NFL.

2. With the benefit of hindsight, is Cam Newton worth what we just gave up? Maybe he is. He just completed the best rookie season for a QB in league history. We can only pray that RG3 plays that well.

3. I saw one or two "insiders" who believed we could get him for less than 3 firsts. Honestly, those people know nothing about the draft. I have no idea what they were smoking, but remember that when you read any of their draft predictions in the future. I love some of their great info on other matters, but their draft nonsense is exactly that--posturing to try to get some kind of internet fan club or something. And at times, it feels almost homoerotic. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :p

4. I'm thrilled about RG3. I'm not thrilled about the extra 2nd we gave up. I'm also a little concerned about the level of talent he played against. Cam did it in the SEC--you knew his stats were for real. RG3 did it against some of the worst defenses in the country. The jury is still out on just how great those numbers were, at least in my mind.

Let's hope this is the beginning of something great in Washington.

Did not want to do it.

Did not want to do it.

I was one of those who felt we were finally on the right path and were building thru the draft and with solid (not spectacular) free agent pickups. I felt that we'd be better served to pull someone like Tannyhill or Weeden and then build around them with everything else.

But now, I think I've come around to the other side.

Heard about the trade as I was getting in my car to drive home. Thought about it all the way there. And y'know......I think it's the right thing. I'm not just at peace with it....I actually find myself getting excited by it. Here's the thing.......we have a new quarterback. Either Andrew Luck or RG3. Probably the latter. We've given up our 2nd pick in the draft which at first I didn't like. But then I remembered who our owner is. Just remember, if you will, we're 40-something under the cap and there are a lot of free agents out there. I have no doubt that we're gonna make a play there. So, for sake of argument, let's say we pick up a strong WR or OL there and we call it a wash. Giving up our next two 1sts is pretty rough....but remember again that free agency is still there and more importantly, if this all works out, those picks aren't gonna be in the top five like they have been. If RG3 pans out in the least, those two picks are gonna be MUCH closer to the bottom of the 1st round and at that level our 2nd rounders won't be all that far behind. We've gone long stretches without 1sts before and if this QB move proves worthy then we'll survive it again. The Giants did....not a soul in NYC is complaining about the picks they gave up for Eli now. Neither will we. Oh, and lastly.....this changes how we will approach free agents and, more importantly, how they approach us. I was feeling that London Fletcher may actually not return this season. Now, with RG3 in the fold, do you think he might look at us a little differently than he did yesterday morning? I do. And I think that goes for any free agent out there. Our defense, particularly with Fletcher in the fold, is solid. A few question marks, but whose defense doesn't have that? Now, with potentially a franchise QB for the near to distant future I think there's draw there. Guys who were slightly considering us as a new home will pay a little more attention.

Look.....there's risk here. Huge risk. But now that I've had a chance to process it I think it was a risk worth taking. The price? High, but not so high that we can't still function...and function effectively.

I'm in.

I still find it comical that everyone thinks this trade makes us a lock to get RG3. Picking second guarantees nothing. If you love RG3 more than Luck (which I do), then wait and hear which name the Colts call out in April before you start wetting your pants thinking we have Griffin locked up.

Also take into consideration that Goodell plans to rule before the draft what penalties for Williams and his teams will be. With our luck, something crazy will surface, and we'll get stripped of picks and get nobody. Then remember that Rick Mirer looked like a franchise QB in his rookie year, so even if we get a great season out of whoever we end up with, I still can't be happy until it looks like he'll be legit long term. So get excited when there's a reason to. We're Skins fans after all.

The cost in picks is too high. I hope they have plans to grab a top tier WR/ G / and CB as a FA, becuase if they cant fix those problems then it wont matter how good RGIII is - we will be like Carolina with Cam Newton.

This WAS an expensive trade, but I'm surprised at some of the outcry - because it clearly isn't in the ballpark of a Ricky Williams/Ditka type move. First of all, the next person who says we 'gave up 3 firsts and a second' is going to get called out. We gave up TWO future firsts and a second. I don't believe, regardless of what we did at the QB position this off-season, that we were going to win just 5 wins again. I think the team has been improving and that we had more than our bad share of luck last season. So those lost firsts likely would have been mid-teens to low 20 range picks (my opinion). The chances of us having a first rounder close high enough to give us a shot at a franchise QB in the next couple of drafts wasn't going to be great, and the expense to move up would've been comparable or worse for someone like Matt Barkley.

I think the Redskins saw the QB they've coveted for a long time, and they made it happen. They didn't give up every pick in the draft, not even close to something like that. They paid a high cost because they believe the value is there. And rumors are, there were other teams willing to match our offer.

Bottom line - it will all come down to performance. If RGIII (or Luck) get the Redskins moving again, turn us into a perennial playoff contender again, this will be the best investment the franchise has made in forever. If he doesn't, it'll set us back years in our pursuit for respectability. But good Lord, after the last 20 years, what are we so afraid of?

The most exciting aspect of this deal is that we may well get RGIII, who not only looks like a special QB on the field, but he's got the smarts, character, and humility fans and coaches dream of. Cam Newton? Zero character - and mark my words, it will come into play at some point. Who Griffin is, between the ears, is special.

The problem in Redskinsland is that the continuing problems at qb over time has the team and fanbase at the point where all they can see is Robert Griffin or the abyss (ie Rex Grossman).

On the basis of that desperation NO compensation would seem to be too much in the dizzy first hours of the action to make the deal.

In a way the fans reaction by and large reminds me of moves in the past for the Deion Sanders and Bruce Smiths.

No, the content of the moves is not the same in that these were 30 something players who were acquired for dollars only.

BUT, the level of hype and exhilaration I see is very similar.

At the time there were calls that building on that 10-6 record in 1999 that with Sanders and Smith the Redskins would go 13-3 or 14-2 in 2000 and were headed for the Super Bowl.

In this case, the team is betting on a rookie with no established history.

Griffin however is being dropped into a situation where competitive talent at many positions on offense is not there.

The Redskins have a LOT of work to do over the next few months to put a capable supporting cast in place.

To your first point, most experts think Luck is the next Peyton Manning - the surest prospect in 20 years. So the idea that Redskins fans are somehow screwed or will be heartbroken if that's who we draft is just plain silly.

Secondly - come on man - we're not going to lose those picks based on something Gregg Williams may have done 5 years ago. It's just not going to happen. The fan outcry would be like nothing any of us have ever seen. Goodell wants to impose discipline on the league, but he's not stupid enough to create outright anarchy. I'm not sure why some of you are so ridiculously negative - I don't even think you believe it, you're just afraid to believe in anything other than a horrible, doomed future because you might be disappointed.

Been thinking about this move all morning. Got busy this morning and couldn't log in.

My first reaction is we gave up too much. Time will tell if this was a great move or not. We will get one of the 2 franchise QB's in this years draft.

If RG3 is a pro bowl player in couple years and we start winning then it is a good move.
We needed a franchise QB. Price was high, but that is the market for a franchise QB. Either you pay the fidler or stay a wall flower.

Price was high, but we really didn't have much of a choice. We couldn't take a chance on waiting another year to draft a stud QB. Could RG3 or Luck be a bust? Yes, but then again any first rounder could be as well.

We now have our franchise QB in place. Time to start shopping in FA to build the team around him.

BD, Griffin is NOTHING like sanders or smith. Those were win-now moves. Griffin doesnt have to win now. Or even next year. He's a building block, not a band-aid. If you think our front office thought we were a player away I could see hating this move. I dont think that.

I'm a little surprised at your reaction to this move Bulldog. Of course you're right that this is a very expensive move. Characterizing it as a gamble is even appropriate. But the fact is that this team hasn't gone anywhere, largely due to long-term struggles at the QB position, and isn't going anywhere until they solve things at that position.

We didn't give up two entire drafts to make it happen. We didn't even give up our entire 2012 draft to make it happen. In the context of every other conversation prior to this, the argument over and over again is that there's huge talent outside of the first round (and even second). For those that don't like this move, that fact seems to have evaporated now.

It comes down to this for me. The Redskins weren't going to turn into a perennial playoff team on the strength/talent those 2 firsts and 1 second would have gotten us. But if we end up with a once a decade talent at QB (be it RGIII or Luck), that may well be the acquisition that takes this franchise to that whole other level. You are absolutely right - whoever is under center will need a lot of help. But we still have lots of draft picks, both this year and in coming drafts. We have a King's ransom in salary cap space and an owner who will spend it. We have good talent evaluation and a savvy front office. And we're not really a cellar-dwelling team. We have a super solid defense, some serious running back talent, and some above average vets in some spots. Those strengths will allow us to focus our now more limited resources on the areas we really need (o-line, cornerback, WR, etc...)

I just don't see how anyone can view the last 12 hours and not feel the Redskins future is a whole hell of a lot brighter than it was before that?

I don't know what fascinates me more the move or the reactions to it. :betterwink:

Neither, by the way, surprise me at all. I'm not surprised at giving up this years 2nd rounder and two 1sts (please, we're NOT giving up 3 first round picks we had and still DO have a first round pick this year only in second rather than sixth place-pay attention.)

I agree this was a move Shanny had to make to keep his job as HC. We desperately need a QB more than we need any other position to put this team in a position to be successful. RGII has risks, Luck has risks, Tannehill has risks, so do Flynn, Peyton, Orton or anybody else you can think of that could posibly have been put in the position of being the next Redskins QB. I am o.k. with RGIII-I'd also be with Luck if Irsay develops a RGIII attraction. I'm not as hyped as some nor as fearful as others. The price was steep but, IMO, a necessary move in order to avoid the same mediocre rut we've seen for too long. If it works-wonderful-if it doesn't, well, then it doesn't but we had to do something or simply sit in the quagmire and complain about the same-old same-old for another season.

Sometimes you have to give the dice a roll.

I'm guardedly optimistic about the move and think it's likely the Redskins FO will be making approprite FA and draft moves to support the new QB.

The move was expensive, of course. But to say it's "paying too much" is a totally different story, and completely ridiculous.
How can ANYONE say we "paid too much" when you have yet to actually see what we have gotten in return for him. Unless you're a proven prophet, I don't care to hear anyone say a team "paid too much" for a player you have yet to see given a chance.

If he wins 2 or 3 Super Bowl, will it have been too much ?
Of course not.
Only then, will you know.
4 words. Only time will tell.

This is one of the first times I can remember NOT being mocked by the national media. That is saying something.
