I don't know if I would call them frauds, but division rivals really matter for how strong a team truly is. You are more battle-tested. The other side is, if you are a strong team in a weak division, you enter the postseason much more fresh. I always felt the 80s 49ers had that huge advantage on the Redskins for "Team of the 80s" status. The Redskins had to deal with real contenders, especially the NYG but the whole NFCE was at least pretty tough.

Not so much for the NFCW. It was largely a cakewalk for the 9ers. Every year, an easy 6-0 (only 4-teams back then). Do I seem bitter? Probably.

Even as the NFCE has gotten weaker in the last 2 decades, largely thanks to the two clowns Jerry and Dan, Philly and NY have been the standards bearers for the division's strength. I haven't looked at the stats, but is it even close for any other division when you consider Super Bowl champs?
 
For some reason, this strikes me the same as the Caleb Williams pick.

For two years, everyone was saying Williams was the greatest prospect and even though Caleb had a slightly down final year, the Bears seemed locked in. Never even seemed to research other prospects. They had their man. Likewise, Johnson has been the hot commodity for a few years now. Clearly, the Bears have interviewed a lot of folks, but for them to have a deal done within hours of the Lions losing makes me think they are just going with the Mel Kiper coaching pick.

I also think the timing is interesting. The Lions were on a big upswing trajectory; going into this year, they looked like a real Super Bowl possibility. Then, they got eliminated - so maybe he is looking at it and thinking, what if my stock doesn't go up from here? Maybe he or someone has also heard some of the criticism on that gadget play or other plays too. There has been some blowback, maybe some very minor damage to the rep. Brady, who reportedly was pushing him for the Raiders position, witnessed the trick play firsthand and was unimpressed after all.

It's interesting how dominoes sometimes fall.

I was thinking about this in a similar way. His stock can only go down from here, especially after what he did last offseason by cancelling while the team was en route. I think he also saw what happened here in Washington and realized he missed jumping on the train. Regardless of what position he took this year, I think he was going to take a job because he didn't want to miss his chance this time around.
 
Take that job jump, dude. I've done it and am right now living to regret it.

He's going to the worst team in a division that already has 3 great coaches. His own current division too.

Must have been the paycheck.

He'll be back as Detroit's OC in 3 years, unless Campbell finds out that just about any OC can coach up all that talent.
 
It came about so quickly, one wonders if there was a little tampering going on.

I believe he interviewed week 1 since Detroit didn't play so unsure how that'd be tampering
