How many people would have rather had Matt Ryan or Baker Mayfield, than Carson Wentz ?
I'm not saying I necessarily would, but I think it's worth considering.
Mayfield is a hard no. If this coaching staff can’t make Wentz successful, then they wouldn’t have any shot at making Baker successful. So I’d much rather have Wentz over Mayfield.
As for Ryan, the issue is if he is good this year, you still have no future. Will it run out next year when he has a huge cap number? So the longterm upside is not there. He may be good this year, but this team wasn’t ready to win this year. With Wentz, if he’s good, he has more years on the contract with a team friendly out and is younger.
On the salary cap side, Wentz is 28 million this year and can be cut after this year with no dead cap if he fails. If he succeeds, you have him for 2 more years at 26 and 27 million. Ryan is only 18 million this year, but is 35 million next year with an 18 million dollar cap hit if he’s cut. So he has to be really good next year to make up for that big number.
Bottom line for me is that Wentz was the smarter choice. It remains to be seen if he will be the better player this year, but I am of the belief it was the better choice when it had to be made.
