I agree with this. We know the league when it comes to scheduling wants to take care of the big teams and the ones that bring in ratings; dallas, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, KC, previously New England but now TB. You throw in the new hot teams like Buffalo, Cincinnati, possibly the Charges. And then steady mainstays like Baltimore, Philly, Seattle, etc. If you take care of all those teams, the rest just kind of get left out and get what is left over. No one in the league office cares this team because they have given them no reason to care. Being poorly run with scandals to boot just makes it that much easier to not care about. Let's face it, outside of the Jets who get that constant NY love, teams like Jacksonville, Detroit, Atlanta, and Cleveland feel the same way. You want to change that, you have to win.
 
Anyone else see the junk Jason La Canfora is peddling now? Saying 'it's possible' if things go sideways with contract negotiations with McLaurin they will look to trade him. Lots of 'reading the tea leaves' and speculation. I don't know how he got out of the Washington Post and got the gig he has now.

Terry McLaurin
This could get explosive, I believe. He has been the Washington offense, without legit QB play or a consistent run game. He is the leader and alpha on that side of the ball. He is durable and exceptional. The Titans eventually moved AJ Brown in large degree, I'm told, because he wasn't in peak for enough (topping out around 70-percent of the snaps). Scary Terry is an 80-90% guy and never had a Derrick Henry, or even peak Tannehill. The fact that we haven't heard a peep about them getting anywhere near a trade should scare Commanders fans, given how much the WR market has shifted this offseason and how much turmoil we have already seen at that position. Does this franchise have the bedside manner and nuance to handle this situation if it gets dicey? And I can't help but wonder if at least one more receiver gets dealt (DK Metcalf could be that guy as well).


Likely outcome: I can't rule out a trade here. You have to consider this franchise and its leadership at the highest level.

That's what this team does. We pay Landon Collins an unconscionable amount of money to play safety and he's a one trick pony.

Meanwhile, we have other players like McLaurin that are close to pro bowl/all-pro level of performance and we trip on the goal line of getting a deal done, seemingly afraid to pull the trigger.

You could make the argument that Brandon Scherff was another player that either should have been traded or resigned BEFORE the consecutive franchise tenders.

I didn't necessarily favor giving him a 6 year deal for $125M but we could have traded him when he was 27 or 28 and gotten back some value when it became apparent unlike Jonathan Allen he really didn't want to be here.
 
I agree in general but the guys who signed Landon Collins are long gone and have not yet screwed up the McLaurin deal. I’ll wait to criticize.
 
Boone, the problem is the deal should have been done before the end of last season. He had already shown elite level production working with mediocre quarterbacks and an offensive line with injuries to the left and right.

This team often seems LATE on things. That was one of D-Hall's complaints. Get out in front and make the bold move, get your guys locked up and set the market rather than react to what others have now paid their stars.
 
That’s assuming the team didn’t try and that the agent was willing to do an early deal. In retrospect that would have been an epic mistake given what we’ve seen happen with WR salaries. I’ve argued the same thing you are both with Cousins and the Scherff situations though, so I get it.
 
Well, it seems that Washington habitually has issues negotiating second contracts with high picks without a lot of rancor and ill will.

If Washington was willing to offer Amari Cooper and Austin Hooper near record setting deals in free agency my belief is a concerted early effort with Terry could have gotten something done.

The Nationals had to take the plunge with Werth, the Caps signed Alex to a uniquely long contract - these were the prices of admission for these teams to show they were serious about winning and moving out of the also-ran category.

If we have to restructure deals to get Terry and a guy like Sweat (if he produces in 2022) under contract then that’s what we have to do.

I am not in favor of offering other teams’ free agents megabucks deals while expecting our own players we develop to accept ‘reasonable’ deals that give the team discounts on value.

Scherff was one. Terry although not a #1 pick is certainly one of the team’s best players. Daron Payne looks to be playing his last season in DC. I don’t understand just letting him play out his deal and then walking.

Fair enough, but do you think Darby was worth the contract he got? He missed more than 1/3rd of the season last year once again, leaving 2020 here in Washington as the only complete year of his career..

Admittedly i didn't follow Denver enough to know how his output was when he was on the field, but he's a $13 mil cap hit each of the next two seasons (though Denver can knock that number down $3mil if he's cut aster 2022)

Scherff is the first guy they've done this with. I don't think he was coming back, and I don't think anyone was trading for him either. I also would not have wanted to give him the deal he ultimately got. The Payne thing frustrated me also, but he's not gone... yet. If we allow him and / or Terry to walk without trading them, I'll feel more the way you do... but we're not there yet. We're fearful because of how past, when we have no idea if anyone even called about Payne, or if the offers were bad.

I don’t know either what he was/would have been offered, if anything. I do think there was the possibility of real value based on the previous season’s performance AND not spending similar resources on a replacement that was not a fit in the system.
 
I am not an NFL GM but I am confident Washington would have found contending teams interested in Scherff going back to 2020.

Again, it appears we are doing much the same with Payne, kicking the can down the road until his contract expires or we decide to string out franchise tags until that cost becomes prohibitive.

I am not comparing the resume of Payne to Scherff in terms of pro bowls, etc. but I see the scenario again here of where Payne departs and we quietly let him walk off into the night.
 
I am in 100% agreement with you Bulldog on both Scherff and Payne. With Scherff, no OG is worth franchise tag money imho - ever. It was clear if he didn’t want to be here, we should’ve traded him and gotten something for him. Ditto Payne, if it becomes obvious a guy is not interested in resigning (or the team decides he’s not a good fit), trade him! Don’t wait until the entire league knows he has no future in DC and you have no leverage. I just don’t get the thought process with either situation. The current regime is really only responsible for what happens with Payne. I suppose it’s still possible they either resign him or get something for him. They also deserve criticism for coming very close to losing McKissic by way of fumbling those discussions.

I will push back on ‘pre-criticizing’ on McLaurin since we have yet to see what will happen there.
