Random Commanders Thoughts

We're actually seeing FO competence at work here.
Because of the fact that we were so patient, deliberate, and cautious, early on in Free Agency, we still have the money to spend on Norman, while many teams have already spent most of their FA allotment, and therefore out of the bargaining picture.

Wonder if they would think of sliding culliver over to safety?

BTW, Listening to NFL Radio this morning, Booger and Ross were talking about DL prospects and pass rushers in this draft and Ross asked Booger, if you need one, who would you draft?

Without hesitation,Booger said Noah Spence or Chris Jones. Thinks both could be special.

Maybe one or both of those will be available at 21? Maybe BB can chime in on that?

Breeland has done a decent job against number 1s so I'd imagine against number 2 he would step up his game
 
Will they switch Norman to the #1 in game? They didn't really have any CB focus on a #1 last year, did they?
 
Well, Elephant, the team really hasn't had a cornerback with Norman's pedigree here in some years so I don't know if that 'we don't zone the field for a #1 corner' philosophy is going to proceed forward now.

Once teams acquire superior talent it's amazing how fast 'adaptations' are made in how they play their scheme.

Perhaps, but the Redskins under this current coach have not made much of an effort to adapt their scheme to their talent. We seem to prefer shipping talent out that doesn't fit the scheme, actually.

Maybe it will be different on defense.
 
Well, don't forget that McCloughan while in SF signed Justin Smith at 29/30 as an unrestricted free agent for big dollars.

While in the Seattle front office the Hawks made the move for Marshawn Lynch.

I think the key here is HOW MANY of these moves are made and at which positions.

McCloughan indicated in his interview that he looked at pass rushers and corners as the key to playing defense. Denver certainly proved that one in the SB.

So, what has McCloughan done? We signed Galette, we drafted Preston Smith at #2 and we have signed Norman at CB.

Seems like he is keeping with his philosophy.

It's not like we just went out and spent $50M on a middle linebacker or a strong safety.

I agree there are certain key positions on the field you have to have upper echelon talent to win.

On offense that's QB, LT, and with the pass happy rules a true #1 wide receiver.

On defense, a pass rush (OLB and DE) and corners that can blanket the intermediate zones.

Norman is 28 and will be 29 during the season, still young enough to be a major contributor over the next 3 years as this team builds back to being a true contender.
 
Yes, hopefully this is a surgical free agent strike that fits the team's plans. We can't expect a team to ignore free agency entirely, so if this is the once-every-few-years big signing, and Norman really is that good, the move makes sense.

I feel very good about Breeland. He looks like an emerging star to me and this is before having Josh Norman play opposite him.

his philosophy is not to go after those guys that get signed on the first day
he has had big signings before even made Clements the highest paid CB at the time. He has stated he molds himself after the packers Ron wolf but will get a big guy if it helps the team.
Now if we start signing 3-4 a year like this serous back loading contracts and cutting guys like Trent Williams and baker and Kerrigan then we are in trouble
 
Ron Wolf added Reggie White didn't he? Sean Jones the next year? Big dollars for that time.

All that was in 1993, 3 years before the Packers won the Super Bowl in 1996.

So, I think we can all stop bleeding our hearts and channeling our worst thoughts that the team is going bankrupt because...........burp......we signed one premium free agent in the past 2 years :laugh:
 
McLuvs will be on point next week once he takes Ryan Kelly at 21. All defense after that.

Do you guys watch the whole draft (1st couple rds anyway) or go back to plans once the skins pick?

One of the main things I like watching is the highlight film of our player picked.
