Random Commanders Thoughts

This late juggling on the line isn't a good sign.

Nah, I think if we saw this happening in late August I'd be worried. But now? The coaches are trying different combinations to prepare for all kinds of eventualities. Seems smart to me.

Despite what I've said about Gruden in the past, bringing in Callahan was a great move, one that I expect to pay dividends immediately.

Why does it matter what a proven offensive line coach does with a rookie? I'm sure he's trying out whatever fits best for the team and will only do what is best to help us win.

Crowder smoked the starting CB for the Texans...apparently it was pretty damn good. This also means we'll be on hard knocksm

This is the second year in a row where we've drafted a natural left tackle to fill a right tackle job.

And, yeah, shifting your #1 pick around isn't a real good sign. I never saw Trent anywhere else but at LT.

Not saying Scherff can't learn the job, but he certainly isn't going to be dominant from the start.

that is because we had nobody else to play it when Trent came in. We have a plethora of players on the right side who are all competing for the same position and we need depth there. Absolutely no coach has come out and said that Scerff has moved permanently and the smart analyst knows that Callahan is trying to get as many players as many reps at every position they can so that in case something happens they can fill in for that player and not be embarrassed.

There really is no doom and gloom with a coach wanting to get his players comfortable with every spot on the field.

All reports I've read say he does very well at run-blocking, and needs to pick up some nuances of pass protection. I can live with that from a rookie, even one picked at #5. He has a great teacher in Callahan, and if the decision is made that Moses is a better RT and Scherff is better at RG, then great. I would have been a lot more worried last year with a rookie head coach making those kinds of decision. But the addition of Callahan means a lot, in my book.

He's a rookie. Most rookies aren't dominant from the start. He's also going against Kerrigan who's got the ability to beat most RTs in the sport.

We've also heard rumors out of camp that Long is practicing at C so I would bet Callahan is developing versatility among his lineman to provide natural depth. Now would be the time to be doing that kind of stuff right?

To me the story is that Morgan Moses has forced himself into the conversation. That, along with Long going from afterthought to likely starter, and the addition of a rookie like Sherff who might be ready to start even without a year in the league to get his bearings, says to me that the OL is headed in a much better direction right now than it has in a very long time.

If that's a bad sign, then we are seeing very different realities.

Jackson was helped off the field and has returned, but he’s in a t-shirt and has his shoulder wrapped and iced. At this point however, the injury is not considered serious.

Much more concerning however, cornerback DeAngelo Hall was helped off the field with an apparent leg injury. According to ESPN’s John Keim, Hall was not putting pressure on his left foot/leg.

Desean and that shoulder...DeAngelo might just need to think about hanging it up

According to several reports, Jackson ran into a blocking sled in the back of the endzone going for a reception.

Hopefully that just means he got shaken up and the arm is a precaution

remember, he hurt his shoulder vs JAX and was tender with it during the season last year. he is a smaller dude and as a WR they tend to be divas about things.

So be it.

I guess I'm just old school in thinking that the #5 pick in the draft should be ready to start in the place he was drafted for.

But, if you think his practicing at guard for two days in a row is a good idea, that's okay with me :).
I think the #5 pick in the draft is going to be playing on our OL for the next 12 years. Over that span I expect he'll see time at tackle, guard, maybe even center. Hell, maybe we'll see him in the backfield lead blocking or as a tight-end-eligible now and again. Point being, no, I really don't much mind if he spends two days in the first week of his first training camp working at guard because another guy is showing enough progress/promise to even make the exercise a gleam in Bill Callahan's eye.

It's all good brother. I'm just a forest guy, I guess, not one looking for monsters behind every tree. :)

Meanwhile, I think I just watched Crowder break that dude's ankles 20 times over, and smiled wider every time.

We ran a fake FG in a camp scrimmage?

I'll have to think about how I feel about that ... :blank:
