Random Commanders Thoughts

Honest question:

do you really believe that anything that happened in the 80s or 90s are relevant to anything that is happening in DC now? I get those are the glory years and the years you love to talk about....but outside of the Pats (who lose players all the time, too) there are NO teams out there that are capitalizing off of massive amounts of great players on both sides of the ball.

I often feel like the Rick Pitino bit when he was in Boston "if you think Beathard, Gibbs, Cooke, or Bugel are walking thru that door you are mistaken. and even IF they did they wouldn't be able to do what they did before"

that's not an attack but more of a question and explanation on why I'm confused about the constant harping on the past in relevance to the present.

No, I'm saying it's like farming. The farmer can do everything 100% right. And then a week before harvest, Mother Nature can destroy it all. And there ain't a damn thing he can do about it.
Except try again.

building an NFL roster is like farming? ok then. the obvious response is that farming has gottten 10,000 times more productive over the course of time.

Yeah but what kind of product is agri-biz farming at 10k times the rate?

I think you missed Ax's point..... there are always factors out of your control

But who ends up getting his boat back into port during and after the storm?

Why focus on the 25% of moves even the best GMs screw up, when we should be focusing on positively rebuilding a roster from the ground up for the first time in 20 odd years with that other 75%?

I sense some fatalism from some Redskins' fans that are so depressed they can't possibly believe ANY change is going to result in anything positive or lasting.

We never used to think about things that way. It was always 'who is the next top lineman' we are going to get in the draft or what move are we going to make in the offseason to get position X or Y shored up.

It's hard to argue with guys that simply want to believe that everything is shit, the new GM is shit, everything is up to luck or the Gods to determine and we are snake-bit with no legit chance to climb up out of the sewer.

Show me. That's all fans are asking. And for the millionth time - the beaten down fans aren't the problem. When this team is something other than a steaming pile of crap, fans will be ecstatic. Until then, it's all just talk and the usual hype. I think given the past 20 years, that's a downright reasonable position to take :)

1.) I'm starting to suspect that when I hit "post reply", my words are being translated to Chinese. But, let me try again.

Is that any clearer?

Your statements have never, from my reading them been anything but perfectly understandable English. :)

... I'd agree that the good ones, outperform the bad ones, more times than not.

What I've said, repeatedly, is that no GM is beyond whiffing, terribly, in the draft. Be it individual picks, or almost an entire draft class. If some are taking that, to think I'm saying that just any ole GM will do, then I've explained myself poorly. Cerrato, has never approached Beathard's average drafts. He's never made anything close to some of the brilliant moves Beathard has. But Beathard, has had a number of Cerrato drafts/moments. He made some moves that Vinny would have said, "WTF is he thinking?"

That sums up what I have been saying. I would use the phrase "some do it measurably better than others" which apparently clears things up a bit.

Oh, the idea of "consistency", isn't really useful here. The variables you mention such as "Cerrato has never approached Beathard's average", "anythimg close to Beathard's more brilliant moves", "a number of Cerrato moments" , are all variables whose occurence and probability distributions can be used to form an assessment of the probability of one being more likely to have a good draft than the other all things being equal. It's not Beathard would be "better" or "worse" than Cerrato-or McLoughan, for that matter-it's who would have the higher probability of having more good hits over several seasons of drafting that the other guy.

Bobby Beathard was the best Redskins GM I know of. His actual record doesn't need the mythical status that some misremember.

I try never to mythologize any person's achievements no ,matter who they might be. Perhaps I did a poor job of making that distinction.

My apologies.

You have to be able to separate out what a bad organization has done over a period of time and what is possible with positive changes.

Yes, the team has to show us that things have in fact improved. But I have no doubt that things CAN IMPROVE given the right impetus.

It seems some here don't think things can EVER change regardless of what happens.

I am just not that far out on the ledge.....................yet :D

Very smart move on Cousins' part and it makes one wonder why Robert didn't think of it first?

I do not care who the Qb of my team is, although it would be nice if Robert would make those picks spent on his behalf worth something, as long as they perform and nail down the spot as franchise Qb...

Something not seen since #9 hung them up in 74.

Calling McLovin a 'failure' because he has struggled with a personal challenge is intellectually dishonest. In the process of failing he, ummm, built some Super Bowl caliber rosters. That's sort of relevant.

I have wondered if he's really got those personal issues under control, and yeah, until he does it here that's just past history. But let's not distort past history :)

While I agree that the fans aren't what's wrong with what is on the field as far as product and heart.....

There can be a case made for the fans being the problems on discussion boards, at bars, on Facebook posts supporting the team. Lets say for example I post "Hell ya, RG III!! Congrats on your upcoming child" how many negative posts do you think I will get? Are they really necessary when it comes to a post about his personal life and gift of a child? On here when we have "Positive Redskins Thread" it gets shit on at least once a page. To me, that is a problem with the fans and not the organization.

I'm also not sure how McLovin is called a failure in ANY aspect when he build TWO super bowl teams in the same division within an extremely short time frame. 3 super bowl appearances by teams you helped build is an accomplishment that not many will ever be able to make in ANY sport. And he did it in a time with a salary cap, trade demands, off field issues, and coaching changes. I am very impressed with his resume and have a good feeling it will be coming here to us as well.

Maybe you've missed following the franchise for the last two decades?

Seriously, do you think we'll be better than 3-13 this year? And, if you do, can you tell me why?

I can give you plenty of reasons we won't likely be any better, but I'm all ears for the positive stuff. I'm hoping you can add something to the conversation, which you haven't so far.

Well I could add that along with Snyder being the antichrist that I heard his new game day ideas this season could be a hit. Like serving bbq made from orphans, and shooting puppy's from a t-shirt launcher, though I think you've already nailed that angle down.

IM on record as stating we'll be a better team this season. My reasons are adding...
McLovin
Callahan
Cavanaugh
Joe Barry (because it's not Haz)
Subtracting...
HazHeem
Forrester

Throw in it'll be everyone's 2nd year in Jay's system, decent if not solid draft picks with less FA's and yes I can honestly see us having give or take an 8-8ish season.

Jay names Griffin starter going in to camp. Even if you don't agree with who got the name it's nice to see someone come out and say "him" and go from there instead of having everyone guess.

Oh, and **** mike Shanahan
