Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember something comically absurd like we didn't even have a scouting department at that stage. Yes?
 
At the time Gibbs was rehired I think the Redskins had the fewest college scouts in the NFL.

It was more than that. The lack of a GM kept the team from having an overall identity, so that every new coach was trying to reinvent the wheel. Changing the direction/identity of the team every 2-3 years just killed it.

So ... what's Gruden's vision for this team? Is it close to what Shanahan had envisioned? Is that what Allen was looking for? What exactly is this team going to hang it's hat on? Zone blocking, read-option ... are we sticking with the 3-4 for real? What are we committing to?

The answers to these questions are far more important than '28-3.' This is the sort of thing a that good teams figure out before they hire someone. Did we do that? I honestly don't know.

I do know we never have in the past. Hopefully that's changed. We'll soon find out.

Yeah i just mean that he won the most games and once Snyder started running things his way nobody, even Joe Gibbs who could win with Scabs vs Dallas' real players, could win more than Turner did but Turner only did it because Snyder hadn't completely blown it up yet. Snyder has set this team up to fail from Day 1 so I'm not in line for KoolAid until I see that start to change. I'm sure the FA signings in a few months will give us a clue. What will you all think if theres another epic Haynesworth or McNugget style signing that Allen takes credit for? Will we all just believe that it wasn't Snyders idea?

Lets say somebody like a 33 year old Robert Mathis is FA and we throw down 75Mil to sign him for 6 years? Dude is a stud, had 19.5 sacks. I'm sure that would equal Championship, right? :D
 
Yea I see your point but even that is a bit suspect. Turner's teams made that push those 2 years because Snyder evidently gave him the FA's he wanted. Hence the 2000 greatest offseason ever crap. I won't argue the overall point that Snyder's FO structure to this point has been a recipe for disaster.
 
Redskins fans defending Norv Freakin Turner....unreal.

The fan base definitely suffers from a form of Battered Wife Syndrome.

Must be horrific to see them walking around muttering "What we do works!"
 
It's been a mess since before Snyder.

Casserly and Turner signed Dana Stubblefield to a $36M contract in free agency and traded #1 and #3 picks to the Bengals for Dan Wilkinson.

Those moves strapped us under the cap a couple of years later once the escalators hit.

At the same time we were drafting busts like Shuler, Andre Johnson, Kenard Lang and Tom Carter. And psychos like Michael Westbrook as well as accused thieves like Albert Connell.

No, things have not been fine in Redskinsland for some time.

Like the rest of us, I walked away from the finale vs. the Giants feeling extremely low about this team. I was left questioning how in a matter of 12 months we managed to walk from one end of the spectrum to the other in terms of our perception of this team. I was left baffled, confused, wondering if it is even worth the time invested in this team to continue to go through this kind of self-inflicted pain and torture. In Robert Griffin's rookie season, we watched the Messiah in cleats. With no hesitation, many of us said he was worth every gut-wrenching loss we had endured as fans over the years. He was the answer to our prayers. Fast forward 12 months later and we have an apparent "coach-killer", "egomaniac", and "selfish" 23 year old. How could it all go so sour so quick? Does our QB that we sold the farm for really suck that bad?

Enter 49ers-Panthers NFC Divisional round match-up. A little glimmer of hope for me personally.

Cam Newton vs. Colin Kaepernick - both easily comparable to Robert Griffin in terms of skill sets.

As I watched this game, I continued to be pleasantly reminded of the fact that there is nothing that these two guys did in that game that a fully-recovered and wisely used Robert Griffin is unable to do.

When you quickly glance at the numbers from these three QBs, you quickly realize that Robert on a bum knee and minus an offseason was not that far off in terms of the production of Kaepernick and Newton. Sure, they were better, but for all the trash that's been thrown Griffin's way (and some of which is certainly self-inflicted), you'd think that he was putting up Eli-like numbers in 2013.

There's one difference that put Newton and Kaepernick in a position to potentially play a conference championship game yesterday, while our QB watched from a distance in the cellar of the NFC East. These guys have well-built teams around them, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Both defenses put their teams in positions where coaches and players alike do not feel like they have to press, panic, or do too much. Every time I watched Griffin this season, it appeared as though he was playing with the weight of the world on his shoulders and trying to make too much happen at once.

Robert play in 2012 (a.k.a. "Messiah in cleats") hid many of this team's flaws and led many to believe that it was going to be smooth sailing for years to come for the organization. The problem with this line of thinking is it assumes said quarterback playing at the same extremely high level and repeating production from 2012. There is inherent risk in that line of thinking, especially when a player comes off what could very well have been a "career" season.

An ordinary Griffin in 2013 proved that there are cracks in the foundation of this team that need to be addressed, plain and simple. It might serve us better off long-term realizing that sooner rather than later and admitting the truth now.

Put a better team around #10 moving forward, particularly along both lines, and I think we erase the panic, doubt, and irrational perception that many have at this point about our Quarterback's ability to succeed.

I walked away a lot earlier than that! It had a lot to do with the time difference, but if we were a good team, the time difference wouldn't have been a factor. However, as kick-off was often 4am Monday here, to sit through a game would mean it messes my whole day, and took the next day to get back to normal. So, I had to make a choice - sit through a game and lose the best part of two days, or sleep and catch up on the score when I woke up.

No prizes for guessing what option I chose!
 
CH, add the pedestrian Russell Wilson to that group. W/out Lynch "Beast Mode" and that defense...where is he? He was 9 for 18 for 103 yards in their win against the Saints. Let me repeat...9 for 18 for 103 yards!

I am still not a fan of the style of play these 4 QB's possess. I think a true pocket QB who has the ability to break away from pressure will always be more successful. But of those 4...I still believe Griffin is the best. If Newton had better coaching on the offensive side of the ball (Shula is not a very good OC), I believe he could be one of the best. I completely under estimated him.
 
One thing I observe about Wilson and Kaepernick is that they both do a much better job of protecting themselves. Griffin, when he was healthy, was a better passer, and had better pure speed than either of them, but he is not nearly a careful as either of them.

Niether is Newton, but Newton outweighs Bob by, what, 30 pounds?

Generally I agree that on the Seahawks, Panthers or 49ers a healthy Bob would absolutely crush it, but he really needs to learn to slide.

Griffin is not 235 like Luck, Newton or Kaepernick.

He's not as durable and needs that point impressed on him when he has a tendency to be reckless on the field taking hits and refusing to just throw the ball out of bounds.
