Random Commanders Thoughts

Some are talking about Todd Bowles potentially being cut loose from the Jets, supposed to be pretty good on the defensive side and not so much as HC.

Ask yourself this question. Is Jay Gruden the kind of leader and coach that is able to produce a Super Bowl winner or multiple Super Bowl appearances?

One thing is certain. Joe Barry is not that kind of coach and leader. You can see it on the sidelines.

Would it be surprising if Scot is given the chance to name his own coaching staff this offseason? My guess is that he likes Cousin Kirk and many other players. I just get the sense that he is not sold on Jay.

If the red zone issues continue, would it be surprising to see Scot get the go ahead in January and get rid of Jay, Sean, and Joe? Others? It wouldn't surprise me.

And give up the 1st or 2nd best offense in the league? No chance of that happening.

WASHINGTON — This is hardly new information, but just for the sake of reaffirmation: Sean McVay is going to be the belle of the ball in the 2017 NFL offseason.

Red zone issues need to get fixed and I've previously verbalized unhappiness with McVay for his propensity to get cute with the play calling. But be careful what you wish for. The past 2 years have seen us with the most productive offense in several decades. McVay is only going to get better.

And the calls for Gruden's head - I have to ask what you guys want in a coaches 2nd and 3rd season? And are you blind to what the continuous revolving door at head coach has earned us over the past 20 years? At some point the madness has to stop.

I've been as angry at Gruden as anyone, but have to side with Boone here. I would be floored, barring a complete collapse, if we parted ways with him. I can remember seasons we would get excited when our offense would break 20 points, which we now do with regularity.

Barry OTOH, meh. I'd be fine with keeping him, I'm not too interested in going after the young hotshot coordinator unless there is a fair degree of certainty he would be a great fit here. I suspect Scot will go hard after the D this off season and Barry will be given one more year to pull his vision for our D together. A bad year next year for the D could well spell the end of his tenure though.

This is also only the second year under Scot, there may very well be some sort of minor shake up within the coaching staff, perhaps even on the coordinator level but I don't see Gruden going anywhere.

What did Gruden get, a five year deal? (don't forget that it is fully guaranteed too)

We're almost exactly mid term and he's got the offense pretty damn close to elite with some talent still developing.

He's done his part with the QB as well, just wasn't who we thought it was going to be.

Special teams are improved, right?

Defense is a work in progress, talent still needs to be infused.

Cooley, right after the loss in Dallas, said this team is as close as he's ever witnessed when it comes to the guys wanting to play for each other along with the willingness to 'gut it out' through injury to be on the field........ this can not be underrated.

One might argue that Gruden is actually ahead of the curve for a freshly hatched HC.

Gruden isnt going anywhere. Barring a collapse of epic proportions down the stretch Gruden is back and will probably be signed to an extension. I know getting swept by Dallas sucks but the way we are playing and with the schedule ahead if we are looking at about 10 wins and another playoff berth. Cousins is fine. Hes better than fine. Hes great. He will get paid here. Hopkins is fine. Hes not going anywhere.

Red zone TDs are an issue but we are still 9th in scoring at the moment. Scoring is not a problem so awful that major shifts in the operation of the frachise must be made. That can and should be fixed on the fly.

Hopkins has had some down moments, but lets not forget how crucial he was in the Minnesota game. Four straight FGs in the second half, including a 50 yarder. He misses any one of those the game is very different at the end. I can forgive him the the 43 yarder against Dallas. We lose even if he makes that.

This team is in very very good shape right now. We are a defensive lineman or two away from being one of the top teams in the league. At the moment we are in the 'pretty good' category for the second year in a row. Are we really already quibbling over details?

Enjoy the ride, guys. They dont come around these parts very often.

The Redskins continue to have red zone issues because they take untimely penalties, can't run the ball within the 20 to any level of productivity which would alter how defenses are playing us on the outside, AND because the coaches get conservative and don't want to expose Cousins to the fatal mistake a la the interception in the fourth quarter against Dallas in the opener....................

In my mind with TEs of the caliber of Reed and Davis and a third down back in Chris Thompson the Redskins should be able to convert more of these chances and the ball needs to find its way into their hands at or near the goal line.

We have to have something else in the 'can' other than a pass on the outside to the corner of the end zone, playing it safe.

We need to use the middle of the field to make some plays.

OK, so we're all to some degree not sold on Barry as DC.

So if Snyder opens his chequebook... who do we want?

Would you try to entice back George Edwards from Minnesota?

Or Sean McDermott from Carolina?

Anyone else?

I know it may sound crazy, but I saw a piece with Marvin Lewis being on the hot seat. Ya have the Gruden Lewis connection, but I don't remember how the Lewis Snyder relationship was. He was a dam good DC.

Right? Cousins is great!!!??? Somewhere, something in the Universe has shifted. :)

Hey, I've always been a bottom line guy, and when the team is winning it's winning. :)

6-4-1 after eleven games is unheard of around these parts. I'll take it for now. Next year or the year after that I'll worry about red zone efficiency or perfect long-ball throwing mechanics or whatever. Yes, we still have holes to fill, but in the meantime we have a pretty good team. I think that's cool. For now, back-to-back winning seasons would be really, really cool. Playoffs two years in a row? I may pass out and die from shock. It's been awhile.

Speaking of which, anyone know the last Redskin QB to throw for 20 or more TDs in back-to-back seasons?

Joe Theismann, '83 and '84. Let's cut Kirk Cousins some slack for not being perfect. Who is going to be available that we'd rather have? He's doing just fine. Pay the man his money.

I brought up the idea earlier, and someone pointed out the potential awkwardness for Lewis to accept a complete role reversal with Jay.

The Jets would be stupid to fire Bowles. But if they did, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Marvin Lewis is highly overrated, IMHO. Pass.

I'm fine with Barry, for now. Guys are in position, especially against the run. Just need to make the friggin tackle. Plus, he's Gruden's boy. His failure would be a reflection of Gruden's judgment. Already questionable, in my mind. Need to firm up the middle of the defense with at least one bona fide star at interior lineman, ILB, or safety. Upgrade the other two as well.

Many of the same criticisms used against "Wrong Play McVay", were used against Kyle Shanahan. Who currently coordinates the top scoring team in the league.

I CRAVE consistency from this organisation.

I want us to just stop looking for the next big thing quick fix. We have a top 5 offense as it stands right now. We lost last week, but by God we put up over 500yards of offense on the team many are tipping for the Superbowl.
We need to turn more yards into points, but we're well on the way to having an Elite Offense if it isn't there already.

Any issues we really have right now are down to our under-talented Defense not being able to keep opponents under our own points total. And that's where the emphasis will be this offseason.

We have a really good QB. Sign him long term. We have a HC who the players listen to, who they play hard for. Is he perfect? No. Not yet, but he's only in his 3rd year and I think he's made strides over the first couple.

We've been so much worse than we are now, let's not blow everything up when we don't need to. I just want off the Merry-go-Round and establish a consistent identity.

Gruden has this team playing hard, it's an identity I like. I really feel like winning consistently is coming if we can shore up the defense next year. I think we have a team that could consistently finish around the 11 or 12 win mark when we get stuff sorted out, and I think we can do that for a number of years and be constantly relevant.

I brought up the idea earlier, and someone pointed out the potential awkwardness for Lewis to accept a complete role reversal with Jay.

This is true, but it's amazing how an attitude or stance can change when you're suddenly out of work.... with an owner throwing crazy money at ya.

Cooley gave a figure for Cousins in the last 19 games as being 12-6-1, with 68% completions, 30-something touchdowns and only 11 picks.

Those are keeper numbers to me.

You also have to factor in that Cousins knows he has to score 24 or more points every week to win because the defense and special teams play is spotty and uneven week to week.

Kirk certainly doesn't have any help like Prescott has with Elliott in Dallas.

Or Russell Wilson year after year who has that defense.

And while our receivers are quality we don't have a Beckham, Green or Jones that is one of the Uber-receivers in the league on the outside.

That's a really good point Kirk needing to score 24+. I've overlooked that as a factor that may add pressure to his game. If there is an elevated pressure level, he seems to handle that pretty well. But playing from behind is much tougher than with a lead. That may sound like a "duh" statement, but playing from behind involves a different scheme and play calling. There have been times we are in a pressure situation that requires a long out pattern to make the first down, but the defense had already keyed in on that and teed off on Kirk. Can't underestimate the pressure.

Take Dallas, they mostly play from a lead, taking the ball first, controlling the clock. So they close out games with offense, whereas, teams that are points challenged and the game is close to the end would like to close out games with defense. For the Redskins, I've seen a weakness in time management for the offense to close out games. That will get better for players and coaches. But for now, we seem to play the type of game that whoever has the ball last will win.

So, for the people who think a tie is horrible, or as bad as a loss, or worse than a loss....
If the season ended today, the Skins would only make the playoffs because they tied, as opposed to lost to the Bengals, as they lead the Bucs by only half a game, for the 6th seed.

Sunday, we play another team that has a tie. Does that mean there's a higher likelihood we get another tie ?
If we do, since a tie is essentially and mathematically half of a win, would the 2 combined ties be just like 1 win ?
