Random Commanders Thoughts

To me it seemed the turd's front 7 was so much more athletic and faster than ours. Not sure if it was our o-line having a seriously "off" game or what.

I'd like to see atleast 2 out of our first 3 rounders dedicated to the front 7. Need savages on that side, no more misreading and arm tackling shenanigans.

I've never had a problem with the way this team is being built. In fact I'd do exactly the same thing.

Team rebuilds are ALWAYS multi year projects. At least 3 years unless you're really really lucky in the draft or FA. But mostly if you're reasonable 3 years.

You can build a team in one of three ways. You build Offense and then build Defense. You build Defense and then build Offense. You try and build both at the same time.

The 3rd option leads to a period of unfocused mediocrity. Look at teams like the Colts, Bears, Buccs... They neither have an Offense or a Defense capable of keeping them competitive. For the Colts it's particularly criminal as they're wasting prime years of Lucks career.

Option 2 gives you teams like the Chiefs. Teams that are good and competitive but give you low scoring boring games. Plus you are often forced into doing things this way when you have the likes of Alex Smith at QB.

We had Kirk. And this team needed to know what he had. So Option 1 was and is the best way forwards. Build an Offense around Kirk and see if he's Franchise material. If he is you get a jump start of having them gel together as a unit and have a prolific offense. An offense that can keep you relevant and in games and provides you with an exciting team to sell tickets.

Which is pretty much what we've got.

If Kirk bombed out then at least you know. And you can draft another QB and put him behind a GOOD O-line with good receivers. Set him up to succeed. Look at Dallas this year with a rookie at QB and RB.
Then again go look at Andrew Luck and how the Colts have mishandled that situation.

And now while the Offense becomes a cohesive unit we can start stacking the defense.

It doesn't matter which team you are, you are NEVER going to hit on all your draft picks or FA choices. There's alot of luck involved.
And you're NEVER going to bat a perfect game.

If the Skins can spend the next year or two building a defense, tweaking the offense and drilling out these little inconsistencies that sink us... then I think we got something really special.

Well we're missing Trent, Nseke is laying ok but it's not the same. Moses is banged up, did you see him limping! And we really need a true Centre.

We're banged up on the line at the moment.

I thought they did a pretty good job all things considered. Pass protection has been really strong. I think we'll see our run game improve when Trent is back too.

Knight from what I witnessed it wasn't as much the tackles but Long and Scherff. There were several instances where the turd DT was camped out in our backfield. Totally agree the skins had a good game in pass pro, but the run game was amiss.

Maybe their d-coordinator prepped them much better, idk. They definitely played more aggressive & alert defending than our D by a country mile.

I like Scherff but he did seem to have an off game.
Long has filled in ok at Centre, but I think that's where we need to spend a pick.

I'm no O line expert but I've always assumed that Pass Pro is easier than run blocking. The latter I sssume needs you to learn direction and timing much more than the former. Maybe that's why our run game blocking is iffy sometimes. Just seems a young line will get Pas Pro first run block later. Which is also why they're hesitant to start moving people around on the line too.

Anybody have any expertise in this area?

Its the opposite. Run blocking is easier than pass blocking. Don't think that that means we get better production from run blocking than pass blocking. From the perspective of the player, its easier to pile drive a guy that's not expecting it, than trying to block while backing up.

Ask yourself this question. Is Jay Gruden the kind of leader and coach that is able to produce a Super Bowl winner or multiple Super Bowl appearances?

One thing is certain. Joe Barry is not that kind of coach and leader. You can see it on the sidelines.

Would it be surprising if Scot is given the chance to name his own coaching staff this offseason? My guess is that he likes Cousin Kirk and many other players. I just get the sense that he is not sold on Jay.

If the red zone issues continue, would it be surprising to see Scot get the go ahead in January and get rid of Jay, Sean, and Joe? Others? It wouldn't surprise me.

Me too.

Barry to me is at best just a guy. Would love to see us move on and hire a big time DC this offseason.

Gruden though? No way.

I'd be okay if DingleBarry was fired before the Arizona game. **** that dude

Watching this KC/Denver game and both these teams have such sound defenses. ALWAYS in proper position with solid tackling. Gonna take a couple drafts to even come close to that level.

I gave Barry the benefit of the doubt last year because we were talent bereft. This year? We don't have much better talent, but his vanilla defenses kill us in crucial situations. Yes, there was a stretch of games with no 2nd half TD's which shows good adjustment, but against horrible offenses.

he needs to go, we need to hire an up and coming aggressive position coach to come in. Gruden has enough experience now, he doesn't need any mentors, we just need a young dude who isn't afraid to bring the heat. Oh yeah, and we need a down DL who is dominant.

I think Jay is safe. Unless the Skins really collapse down the stretch if you look at his record over the last year/year and a half you can see how this team has turned around. He may not be the worlds greatest head coach (yet) but he's a young relatively new one who is still learning. Unless the Skins collapse he's going to get the benefit of the doubt because of the culture change he has instilled in this team. This isn't a loser franchise anymore, they come out every week and compete. They have the air of a team that has turned the corner.

McVay... not sure. How much of our offense is him? How much is Jay's influence? I'm not sold on him.

Barry I think has to go. While we had a bunch of injuries at the start of the season on D, especially our secondary, the personnel have been pretty stable on that side for a while. And while we show flashes of good D, we fold at the worst times. I'm sure we could find someone to do a better job with what we have, and more so if we spend this off season shoring up the D in the draft and FA. I agree with El, get a young up and comer. Can't be worse surely that what we have now?

Other than adding Norman and Cravens, exactly how did we upgrade the talent on D this year?

The GM thought it was fine to stand pat at DL and ILB and for the most part, stood pat at safety-talent wise.

Barry could dial up a few more blitzes, but he really doesn't have a whole lot to work with.

Preston Smith has shown up big in one game but hasn't really been the big impact player we've been hoping for.

The players speak highly of Houston Bates, but he can't get on the field for some reason.

Same with Spaight,Garvin and Everette.

So either the above mentioned suck so bad it's not worth seeing them on the field or Barry stinks that bad.

Which is it? Still would like to see Barry operate with something to work with.

This is just my own sense of it, having watched Barry's defenses over a year and a half ... I just don't feel Barry puts the players we do have in the best possible position to succeed.

It seems like we come into most games with sound enough gameplans, but once the bullets start flying we don't seem adjust effectively on the fly. And we rarely catch the other team by surprise on key plays--we generally seem to be reacting rather than forcing the action. And the confusion at the LOS and blown assignments we've seen more than a few times recently are scary this late in a season. Sound defenses just don't totally blow multiple coverages in a game beyond the first couple of weeks--and at this point I'm not pointing the finger at the players any more.

Yeah, I know we're missing pieces over there. We need two/three impact players up front (LB and DL) before we can begin to think of this group as a legit playoff defense. But I also think we are glaringly lacking in cohesion, coordination, and timely, creative play-calling. And those issues, to me anyway, are more a function of a limitation at the coaching level than to inferior talent. No, we don't have all the pieces we need to become elite on defense, but I think the limitations at the coordinator level aren't allowing us to max out on the talent we do have.

The offense is approaching elite level. Add a solid defense to the mix and we're a legit contender. What we do at DC this offseason, as well as player acquisition of course, will say a lot to me about how both our GM and head coach view this defense and this team.

Thing is, one year ago, we were in virtually the exact same scenario on Defense, approaching the offseason.
And what did they come up with ? Matt Ionnaidis. Cullen Jenkins. Kendall Reye.

Fear,

I've said since FA and the draft I was surprised how little we did to address the defensive front seven. And I noted in my previous post we are still missing pieces there. What we did try to address last offseason was the crippling issues we had in the secondary, which had us bringing guys in off the street, starting an aging, freelancing corner at free safety, and regularly leaning on a converted undrafted rooked wide receiver at corner. Sitting here today, I have to believe we'll target the DL and LB positions aggressively this offseason.

Which brings me back to my post above. I don't think Joe Barry is the right straw to stir our defensive drink going forward, no matter who we have on the field. And I don't think we're getting on accurate read on the level of talent we DO have because of the limitations at the coaching level. If I had to bet my own hard-earned money on it, I would bet Scott M. feels the same way. Not sure how Gruden feels at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sees it that way now as well.

OK, so we're all to some degree not sold on Barry as DC.

So if Snyder opens his chequebook... who do we want?

Would you try to entice back George Edwards from Minnesota?

Or Sean McDermott from Carolina?

Anyone else?
