Random Commanders Thoughts

Wright doesn’t fall under the command and control of Peters.

Huh? I thought everyone did?

Are you pulling my leg? Peters is the top dog on the football side not the business side. Wright (like Peters) reports directly to Harris.

No, it seemed to me that Harris was removing himself and Peters was going to take a GM and CEO role. I thought I had heard him discussing stadium deals at on point, for example.

Wright doesn’t impress me. He seems like a guy that was hyped because he was younger and came in with a clean record which contrasted with the rest of the Snyder crew.

What has he really accomplished here? What initiative is he spearheading that is key to the team’s future?

Wright is a smart guy and probably not without some skills and talent. But I think he’s also obviously a diversity hire. That’s not a bad thing - the NFL with a huge % of its members being African American should have more black coaches and executives. But throwing Wright into one of the most broken organizations in the NFL for his first major NFL gig was a terrible decision. In way over his head from the outset.

If Rivera was installed at the leagues demand, as has been insinuated, then so was Wright.

After watching the debut episode of HBO’s offseason Hard Knocks, boy am I glad that I’m not a NYG fan. What an completely uninspiring group of front office personnel and coaches. They are even more fucked hamstrung by their decision to overpay Daniel Jones than I thought they were.

Turns out if Rivera was installed at the league’s demand, they, at least, owe the fans compensation. Forcing Snyder out does cover some of it, but not all.

I don't know - who were they going to find that was a proven winner willing to come here and report to Dan Snyder? Gibbs couldn't win here with Snyder as owner. Nor could Mike Shanahan. The best we could do was to go after a guy just fired in Charlotte. I really don't think there were great options available (if they were looking for a guy who could handle Snyder to some degree).

I'm a little skeptical about the 'NFL installed' story. Especially if the idea is that the NFL was already working on getting Snyder out as owner - what leverage would they have to force Snyder to hire a HC of their choosing? The original story, which is that Snyder reached out to Joe Gibbs and it was Gibbs who steered him towards Rivera, sounds more likely to me. Especially because of Rivera's personal 'faith' and because in the absence of a Bruce Allen type GM, they were looking for someone who could handle the whole shebang. The NFL may have strongly endorsed Rivera as a well-known member of the head coaching fraternity, but I'm really doubtful they imposed him on Snyder.

Yeah, I don’t buy that the league installed Rivera. The Gibbs connection is much more plausible since Dan had no one he would listen to other than Gibbs. Plus, I don’t think the league was looking to push Snyder out back in 2019/2020 when Rivera was hired. The push came after that when all the reports of sexual harassment came to light and sponsors started bailing. That last part was the key. The NFL will cover up and downplay anything until it causes them to lose money. All that came out in public after Rivera was hired. If the league wanted Snyder out before that, they could have made it happen after the 2019 season when the whole football operation was getting a reboot. But having an idiot run a team just gives other owners someone to take advantage of, so why push him out. Maybe behind the scenes they were starting to talk, but I don’t believe there was any real push on Snyder until after the sexual harassment story hit the newspaper and sponsors left.

Yes, skeptical as well here. Lake Lewis reported it quite firmly from sources during his appearance on the knuckleheads pod. That was the only time I had heard such an insinuation but Lewis isn’t one known to market in hyperbole or to play fast and loose with his reporting.

I would very easily be prone to believing that Wright was foisted on Snyder more than Rivera.

Agreed. My feeling is that I don't doubt Lake Lewis heard this... I'm just questioning the validity of it. And as Kel did a better job of explaining, it doesn't make a lot of sense with the timeline. I think the NFL is bound and determined to promote minority hires in executive leadership positions, so that was likely a big factor in the Wright hire, and probably explains why he is still employed.

What I always laugh at in that clip is Ron Middleton dancing over Riggs and the Falcons defender who was destroyed on the play. I’d love to know what he is saying and if he’s telling the LB he just got demolished and driven back 4 yds into the end zone.

What an OL that was! I mean, they just moved the Falcons DL back 5 yards at will and walked into the end zone. I can't even remember what it was like to have that kind of dominant line.

There should be news. What is this windless Sargasso Sea we have fallen adrift upon?

On my Twitterfeed, the Redskins briefly trended because Draft Kings chose to reveal their best returners of all time and listed Brian Mitchell at number 2. That part was fine. A lot of people didn't think it was fine that they put the Eagles logo next to his name.

BMitch might have played for the Eagles, but thinking of him as a Philly player is a bit like saying Brett Farve should go into the HOF as a Viking or Joe Montana as a Chief or Brady as a Buc.
