But is Sam Howell > Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye?

If not, does Peters want a veteran backup to help ease the transition for say, Daniels?

At this point of his career I think Mariota is now comfortable in the backup role.

I think Sam at 24 still wants to start.

That won't happen here unless the pick is traded.

I see the trade down as 5-10% chance, although I would consider it myself as the GM.

I think Peters IS aggressive and confident enough to stay at #2 and make that signature pick for a future franchise quarterback with the pressure on.

That's one reason we went out and hired him.
 
Unhappy about the Marriotta signing as it feels like a vote of no confidence for Howell. Obviously, they’ve done their evaluation and this is the outcome, boooo

I suppose there’s a chance that Marcus was signed to be Sam’s backup, but that feels unlikely
 
Yeah, I think the handwriting was on the wall when Dan Quinn talked about Jayden Daniels as being a 'game changer'.

It was all in jest at the time as part of a word association game, but often truth is revealed when guys are talking off the top of their heads.
 
Dan Quinn sent me a DM on Instagram solidifying my belief that Drake Maye will be the team’s choice in the draft.
 
Really? I ran into Josh Harris at Congressional CC on Sunday and he said the team was taking Daniels :p
 
Josh is smokescreening you both. At dinner last night he said they’re taking J.J. McCarthy at #6 after fleecing the Giants.
 
Denver should be sending Washington a #2 draft pick for Sam Howell if the reports they are talking with Zack Wilson are accurate.

Zack Wilson? This guy was the worst quarterback in the NFL in 2023.
 
That's the problem, BD. Denver doesn't HAVE a 2nd round pick. Seattle got in a trade for a guy who is currently sucking up more than $35 Million of Denver's cap space to play for the Steelers.
 
I was joking about the level of the pick, but the point being that ANY solution vs. signing Zack Wilson is the correct one to make.

I can see why Payton is scanning the league.

What I don't get is if Denver was talking to Sam Darnold and was close to a deal, how that came unraveled?

Minnesota is a better team than Denver but the money they are giving him is chump change.
 
Om and I were briefly chatting - and it makes zero sense to move Howell. You won't get squat for him, certainly no more than a 5th, what we spend on him, and maybe not even that. He's still on a rookie salary. And he showed quite a bit of arm talent last season. Great kid on top of it all (and that matters).
At worst he's a good backup once he's coached up by the new regime. I will be very surprised if they don't at least bring him to camp and see if he can beat out Mariota for the back up role (or temp starter if a rookie isn't ready).

You're reading way too many tea leaves. Highly likely they haven't even decided which QB they like best in this draft.
 
I know we are all over analyzing every move, but think the signing of Mariota makes it more likely they keep Howell. I don’t know why, but I just think that signing keeps the door open for Howell to be the guy in 2024. At the very least, it gives them that option if they choose to go that route. They haven’t pigeon holed themselves into having to draft a QB because they these 2 on the roster.

Anything is possible. I'm very skeptical these guys are going to telegraph anything they are thinking.
 
Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if these guys aren't waiting to see where the QB chips land. That will determine who needs what and who is desperate for what.

Then they can see what Howell is worth and what that #2 pick is worth. That is when things get interesting.
 
I still believe in Howell, but I think you're right Neophyte. Right now, Howell provides the team options.

He's still a pretty high potential QB with a few unknowns erased, but he's also a QB with flaws that are apparent on tape. So, he could be a keeper, a valuable trade asset, or a transition QB (this feels less likely with the acquisition of Marriota)
 
I am wondering if Minnesota packages Jefferson and picks to move up for qb.

Sam Darnold is a backup at this point.

Someone on twitter pointed out the fact that we were linked to (and supposedly talking to) Sam Darnold yesterday, so It's not like Mariota was some pre-meditated decision based on the draft process. Had we landed Darnold, does that mean we're more likely to target Maye / Nix? Nah, I don't think one tells the story for the other.
