QB or not QB

All that's reasonable - except it violates my QB draft principle (strangely enough still not widely known by every NFL GM). If you don't have a certain franchise QB and you hold a high pick in the NFL draft - you swing like hell for one and you do it every time. No one in 2020 felt Dwayne Haskins was going to be a franchise QB. I would kill to know who our scouts WANTED us to pick, because it damn sure wasn't Dwayne Haskins.

You are absolutely right that conventional wisdom was that Young was the best player in that draft. But I still say, when you don't have a proven QB, you swing for one.

Haskins was taken in 2019. Gruden was still the HC. If I’m not mistaken, Kyle Smith got up and threw a fit that they were ‘forced’ to take Haskins, and to settle him they traded back into the first and took Sweat (which is who the football people wanted all along).

Don't want Jayden Daniels. Guy takes too many hits and doesn't protect himself.

Already hearing pundits say "Well, you're gonna have to coach that out of him" and that comes off to me as "We'll have to teach Robert how to slide".
Alot of BS to sift through on these Top 3-4 QB prospects(if that's the way Peters wants to go) as the media hype machine pumps these guys up like they do every year.

I imagine Kirk is off the table for obvious reasons. I think that sucks cause I want decisions made based on putting the best players in the field to win - not PR and optics. But I also understand the need of new ownership that vastly overpaid for a dumpster fire, to limit how often they set new fires that need tending to.

Brisset was expensive but is another option. I always liked him.

it would be interesting if, after finally having competent ownership and structure (assumption - I know), they decide to trade out to stock pile and build talent in hopes they bring in a QB next year or the following year and have a solid foundation to put them in (ie: do the frekin thing we’ve been demanding the org do for 20 frekin years!!!) fans are outraged cause we didn’t swing at the latest hyped QB 😂

The reality is we live in an era where everyone wants to knee jerk evaluate everything, then shout from the rooftops that their opinion is right, and has a microphone that is twitter… it’s going to be nauseating dealing with all those people who lack any ability to chill out, and wait for results before declaring someone did a bad job.

Of course, I’m cut from the “it takes about 3 years to evaluate a draft” cloth.

Kirk is going to be 36 years old coming off a major injury that could affect his mobility and I think we have seen his postseason ceiling - much like Dak Prescott.

So, if I am the GM of a rebuilding team may short answer is 'no'.

Especially after he asks for a 3 year contract for $120M, all guaranteed :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

One question to those that don't want to take a quarterback in 2024:

What makes you believe that we are going to be able to find a younger quarterback in 2025 or 2026 that doesn't have a lot of the same questions about readiness at the next level?

By all accounts 2024 is considered a good year for quarterback prospects overall.

There is no guarantee 2025 or 2026 has better prospects OR that Washington is then in position to acquire them.

Nobody would have thought Flacco was going to do what he did, but our luck had it so we chose Wentz over him. That's just riverboat gambling on a losing streak

Flacco was lightning in a bottle. He didn't do anything in the past 3 years to show he was anything more than washed up at age 38.

If I were a betting man I would wager that Flacco doesn't repeat his 2023 performance in SIX games down the stretch in 2024 in an extended look (if he gets one).

To me it's one of those late career performances you sometimes see out of players just before they are out of the league for good.

Again, it's fine for a team that has a 10-7 or 11-6 caliber roster to take chances on veterans like this because the support system is there.

You don't put a guy like that or Kirk on a 4-13 football team that is rebuilding with 22 and 23 year old players.

Al Galdi pod this morning had Ryan Abraham of USCFootball.com on. A much different take on who Caleb Williams is than what we have been fed on social media.

Basically refuted the idea that he’s a diva, that he isn’t well-liked by teammates, how competitive he is, and that the USC offense didn’t really have much of a drop-off in 2023 with Kingsbury there as some in the media are pushing…

Not exactly in the “don’t want to” camp but I would be ok if that’s what they decide to do…

I don’t believe that, and I don’t think that’s really part of it for me.

For me I believe you can build a team different ways. I don’t believe you need a Patrick Maholmes or Tom Brady to win a Super Bowl or be a highly competitive team. I also laugh at the notion that there are can’t miss generational talents. They claim this shit all the time and it rarely works out. History is littered with busts.

If the 49ers front office is so smart (I think they are) and this stuff is so easy (I don’t think it is) then why did they whiff so hard on drafting their QB?

There’s a lot of smart people across the league doing this. And yet 9 other teams passed on Maholmes. You can find plenty of teams that passed on QB’s that turned out to be great. Same with other positions.

It’s hard. It’s hard to correctly evaluate these people. It’s hard to build an entire team that’s successful. This is a multi billion dollar league paying big money to smart people to figure this stuff out - and they miss all the time.

I scoff at the notion of can’t miss generational talent. So if Peter’s decides to pass on bringing in a rookie QB, because he thinks he needs to build a better foundation so when he finally does bring one in they can be successful, then I’m wholly on board that.

And ultimately I’m ok with believing Peter’s is way smarter at this than me, and giving him a chance to do this thing and see what the actual results are, before declaring decisions are bad. Even if that means not swinging at a QB right now, when there’s this much hype.

It's funny how much anti-Williams information is out there.

You look back at other quarterbacks expected to be taken #1 like Andrew Luck or Burrow and there were literally NO negative reports on them at all.

Williams must be a guy that gets under other people's skin because of his outspoken nature and competitiveness that comes across as arrogance?

I don’t think most fans would be irate if they elected not to swing for a big QB in this draft, at least not for long. I believe most of us are solidly in the ‘we finally have a real GM and grownups in the front office and they deserve trust until they demonstrate they don’t’ camp.

But to Bulldog’s point, there may be more than one way to find a QB but by far the most common way is to draft him in the first couple rounds of an NFL draft. Doing it some other way is far more challenging imho.

At some point, you have to find a QB if you want to have sustained success. I feel like there aren’t many better times to try and do that than when you have a high draft pick and multiple other picks.

He’s black. It may be 2024 but I think we’d be naive to pretend that the bar isn’t different for African American QBs.

It's self inflicted

Refusing to speak to media after a loss
Refusing to play in holiday bowl
His 7-5 record and not being a ranked team
Lack of ball security

It's not like they're judging him harshly for things that aren't important. These are legitimate issues and red flags.

What?!! Seriously?

CJ Stroud is black
Justin Fields is black
Tua is black

It has nothing to do with skin color and all to do with him

Sports media has a lot of similarities to political news media.

It’s always interesting to watch a take catch fire, and you start trying to figure out where the information is coming from, and it appears it just a bunch of people jumping on a take and sourcing one specific article for it.

At the end of the day, a word of caution - think about how often the national media is running with a thing about our team, that we know is total bullshit. Hiring bellicheck, and signing Jackson are two recent, obvious nonsense stories with no actual backing, that come to mind

Everyone’s tripping over themselves for clicks and right now the “Williams had problems” is what they’re all chasing. It’s best to just ignore it and hope our people are smarter than to rely on national media hot takes to make decisions (which I firmly believe Snyder did a lot of …)

And there are a ton of other positive aspects of the guy. He’s not viewed as the best QB in this draft by the vast majority of draft gurus for no reason.

Yeah, and so often it's low info or only partially true takes that catch fire first or burns brightest. People remember the headline, but don't read the article which proves the headline most false or highly exaggerated.

I dont think its a race issue. I think it is a reflection of what we see. Dad very vocal, crying after losses, avoiding the media. He has major red flags

Yes, you're right. Not for no reason... character issues
