PFT: Washington may be in the Mariota business

:) Henry. I think the one move I'd totally hate is taking Winston. Just no interest in that bone head at all.

Cleveland doesn't have a top 10 pick.

If the Eagles want to move up and take Mariota they need to deal with TN, JAX or WASH.

I don't think the rumor is even true, but the idea is that the Eagles would recoup a 1st round pick in the deal to then use as bait to move up.

I've seen at least one mock draft that has Mariota falling to the Browns at #13, so it's not out of the question for the Eagles to do what the rumor states

If you look at recent drafts, even really marginal QBs have been taken way early. I would be very surprised if Mariota is there at pick 5. If he falls out of the top 10 that'll absolutely shock me. I wouldn't put too much stock in mock drafts - you could probably find a mock with just about any crazy scenario...

I see no way the Eagles have enough juice to pull off any kind of deal to get Mariota. What are they going to use for ammo?? Even with Bradford, it'll take a King's ransom. And they don't even have a regular ransom :)

But you never know for sure what'll happen...

HCs know that they are likely to be fired at the end of their first contracts or earlier. Turnover is just so high. Because of that, a HC may as well be aggressive and try to get "their guy" and at least go down swinging.

GMs who are in charge will hopefully have a longer term view.

That's why Mariota likely won't even get past 6.

Another truth is that HCs don't get fired for picking first round busts at QB. Fans and cities can forgive that.

But if you don't pick that QB and he becomes a star while your team still sucks? Pack your bags.

So if your team needs a QB like Tennessee or the Jets and you pass on Mariota or even Manziel last year in the 20s and they actually become great QBs elsewhere? You're dead meat.

I'll buy your assertion for QBs felt to have franchise QB potential - guys considered legitimate top 5 NFL draftees. But you are way overstating it when you throw out Manziel. The Browns drafted him because they are stupid and desperate, not because there was even a chance in hell he would be a franchise QB and there'd be hell to pay if they let someone else get him.

I use Manziel just as the most extreme bust example. At least to this point of his career.

I used to laugh at teams when it felt like they were reaching for a QB in the first round. Locker, Bortles...and yes, at least for me, even Manziel. Now I cut them a little more slack.

It's just my opinion (and could be totally wrong) but if I'm a HC and know that I probably have 3 or 4 years tops, and my choice is between an aging Jason Campbell, Hoyer, or some guy nicknamed "Johnny Football" I'm probably feeling a little pressure to pull the trigger.

I believe that, plus the knowledge that a franchise QB can set you up for 10 years, causes these execs to kid themselves--or to see small glimpses of promise in a player and to then make a poor decision.

everything I have read thus far on mariota generally arrives at the same bottom line: the kid either has to go to a system that fits what he did in college or that he has all the physical, mental and leadership capabilities such that with a year or two of grooming he has a huge upside.

Mariota is an interesting case to be sure. If he does have a bright NFL future, it's going to be because he has a decent team around him and gets a chance to learn on the job for a couple of seasons. From what we're hearing, he's very bright and a student of the game, has good pocket skills, and at least a serviceable NFL arm.

I just can't quite decide on this guy. One day I see him as just another overhyped "system" guy a la David Klingler ... the next day, I see him as a potential Drew Brees.

Every GM running a team without an established QB is surely not just studying shitloads of game film on Mariota, but turning over every rock they can find on his character and emotional makeup ... and probably burning incense and supplicating the gridiron gods for insight.

Well, until they call me, they won't know for sure.

OK, the plot thickens. Mariota's visit to Redskins Park gets cancelled, either by him or by the Skins, and I can't help but wonder why.

If our interest is a smokescreen, wouldn't bringing him in cause interested teams to jump us when we need them to move to OUR spot? Does he already potentially have a deal in place with Tennessee? Do the Titans already have a trade worked out with another team and told Marcus' agent he's going #2 no matter what? Or do the Skins already have a trade down worked out with another team should he still be on the board at #5?

Sure, it could be a "timing issue" and we're still interested but I'm not buying it. Something else is afoot.

I like Tandler's hypothesis that there is a scenario that is becoming more likely where Leonard Williams falls to us at #5.

Bucs - Winston
Titans - Mariota
Jags - Fowler
Raiders - White or Cooper
Redskins - Williams

And if that scenario holds, forget about moving down................draft the man and have a potential all-pro on the line for the next generation :cheer2:

I keep hearing this as a possibility but I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. He's being talked about as a Suh / Ngata type player that can walk into any camp, day 1 and start. If he falls.. it could be one of those franchise changing moves that you look at in 10 years and say "that guy was a cornerstone for a LONG LONG time. Am I giving too much credit???

I know he fell for off the field questions, but remember when Warren Sapp was the consensus best defensive player in the draft and went to the Bucs who were down in the draft beyond the top few picks? :)

If it were me I would ignore Mariota at #2 overall and take Leonard Williams if I were the Titans.

I would go with Mettenberger for one season and continue to build next offseason with a qb in the draft as the first priority.

Then you have your offensive and defensive anchors.

You just never know 100% with any of these guys, except maybe recently with Andrew Luck.

Remember last draft when the consensus was that Clowney was probably the most dominant defensive player of the last ten years?

Injuries just play such a crucial role.

I truly don't care what position we draft. We've had such an amazing run of injuries to our top picks over the last ten years--RG3, Jenkins, Phillip Thomas, Kelly.....please God, just let us draft a future hall-of-famer who will stay healthy at whatever position it may be.

I don't really even remember anyone thinking clowney was going to be good...his own coach even called him out on tv.

I also remember luck being called a system guy and the main reason he's fit in so well is what was already in place. Had he gone to Cleveland we most likely wouldn't have this same conversation

Really?

Tha'st all that was talked about last April...how Clowney and Watt paired together was going to be devastating to the league's offenses...that nobody would be able to block the Texans pass rush because they'd have to decide who to double:Watt or Clowney?

By the time the draft rolled around, the Clowney talk was nauseating.

Weird.

Really?

I remember his heart questioned, his coach calling him out on his ethics, and everyone saying he was a gamble because of that.

He was called great IF he could show heart...which nobody thought he could or would. They were right.

Clowney had issues with effort his last year in college. He coasted on what he did the year before.

Leonard Williams to me is a much better NFL prospect. He is the complete package.

Clowney physically reminds me of Courtney Brown, another very long and angular DE, that had problems at the next level.
