Official Game Thread - Week 8 - Bears @ Commanders

Oh, I didn't say good. I said "better". There are so much better than they were in Game 1. They are not a good team. Cinci, Ravens, and TB all demonstrated that, but against average to poor offenses, they are competitive. And just to be fair (or generous) the Bears had been stomping some opponents recently, so they may be a goodish offense even if they were not yesterday.

Cool. I thought it was a mandatory play. Also, I saw a tweet someone posted that showed that they did not win their bet. They zeroed out.

So when the line is 2.5, 3.5, 6.5, or 7.5, convention is to “buy” the line so it moves to 3 or 7. Basically you lose a little on your winnings to get a different number. The idea is you want to push on a 3 or 7 point game (since those are the types of scores you can get) so you don’t lose your whole bet just cause one team puts together a last second drive to break a tie with one of those scores.

I don’t do it. Most gamblers would consider it dumb that I don’t do it. I would guess 90%+ of gamblers (that know what they’re doing) will ALWAYS buy the “hook” (that’s what everyone calls that .5 point difference)

So I have no doubt that the vast majority of gamblers that took Chicago on game day at +2.5, bought the hook and pushed as a +3

Yeah I get people have been high on them lately. They’ve beaten other bad teams. I wasn’t impressed. And they’ll struggle to do better than 3rd in their division this year.

And for all the hype Williams sucked yesterday. And he looked dejected and checked out for most of the game.

(edit: these are just my opinions, I’m aware they’re not exactly popular ones at the moment :) )

Stevenson is taking a lashing in the press

Issues an apology via social media

"To Chicago and teammates my apologies for lack of awareness and focus .... The game ain't over until zeros hit the clock. Can't take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvement will happen. #Beardown," Stevenson posted on social media Sunday night.

The Defense is better than it was at the start of the year, I don't think there's much doubt about that. Yes, we've played some basement teams thus far, but teams like Chicago were beating up on bad defenses in previous weeks. They put 35 points up on the board against both the Panthers and the Jaguars. Not standard bearers, I agree, but those are pretty big totals against bad defenses.
Our Defense held them pretty much scoreless for most of the game. Only really started to break when they were worn out as our Offense struggled in the second half.

I'd say our Defense is approaching average. It has issues, and those issues are exploited by more experienced teams. I'm not totally throwing out the Tampa game, but it was the first game of the season, with a new coach, new DC, new players, new scheme, running against a team that had been together a while already and were a bit of an offensive juggernaut at the time. Baltimore is the real yardstick, and they're a team that is VERY well put together and very experienced in high level play. Lamar and co are where I hope our offense is a couple of years from now after we get some continuity with the same QB running the show. The fact that they dissected out fledgling defense is unsurprising.

I'd like to see some trade moves to shore up our weaknesses for a decent run this year and to really see where we need to fill gaps in the off season to make a sustained run at the Superbowl over the next few years.

Two fast thoughts-

1. I was not bored watching the game yesterday compared to a week ago.

2. Simply amazing how quickly the entire narrative of a game can change in a single play. The discussion would be entirely different today had that one play not been successful.

Stevenson is obviously immature. Whether it's his usual MO or just a 23 year old getting jacked up in perhaps his first national game of import we will have to see.

From a Washington standpoint, I really noticed how the defensive line has come together after the Jonathan Allen injury and then the release of Jamin Davis.

We plucked 28 year old DT/DE Jalyn Holmes off the Jets practice squad and he has 2 sacks in 2 games for us.

You see Daron Payne taking a leadership role and putting a lot more pressure on the pocket up the middle. He really helped cause the sacks we got against Dalton in the Carolina game. He was pretty much beating the OC and OG like a rented mule.

The rotation tandem of Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorrance Armstrong (with Dorrance back from injury) really played well yesterday. It's an effective two-man platoon at that DE spot. You get the strength of Armstrong on the early downs and then the quickness and veteran guile of Fowler on the rush.

My one concern right now is left tackle. We need to get one of our top two tackles back in time to take on a Giants team that has a good defensive line and rush despite having major holes elsewhere on their roster.

I think, though, if the PAT or try is needed from a win perspective, it’s taken. It’s kindof like the bottom of the 9th in baseball. Gone team doesn’t have to hit if they have the lead.

We won the game in regulation, a PAT is meaningless. However, if we needed the PAT to tie (or attempt 2 point conversion for a win) then they would still have the untimed play.

At least, that’s my understanding.

Serious conspiracy question. Is the reason the refs didn't clear the field and allow the extra point try because if we make it we beat the spread and the refs lose money? The Hail Mary was in regulation. There should have been a kick after.

NFL eliminates unnecessary PATs, two-point conversions after walk-off touchdowns
