Official Game Thread - Week 8 - Bears @ Commanders

So, the last play blew me away and blew out my vocal cords, butI do have to say...

If the refs didn't throw a questionable flag when we stopped the Bears on fourth down
If the refs didn't give us an awful spot when Daniels ran for a first down
If the refs didn't steal the TD from Ertz when the ball was ripped out after he caught the ball in the endzone, survived the ground, and the play was over
If the refs didn't throw a flag after McLaurin crossed the endzone and the play was over, deciding after the fact that there was a lineman downfield
If the refs didn't penalize us and ignore that the Bears had twelve players on the field
and so many more...

I am so elated we won. We beat the damn refs! Those flags were thrown so late. They worked so hard to erase every scoring opportunity. And yet, all it did was set up the miracle volleyball play. I know I'm going to croak like a frog tomorrow from all the screaming, but that was a finish like no other I have seen. We controlled the first half, played an uneven second half, and stole a game we were winning for all but ten seconds.

What a game!

The positive version--

Nobody will talk about it, but somebody needs to give Allegretti a pat on the back for laying somebody out on the Hail Mary. His block allowed Jayden to step up an additional three yards before heaving the ball and helped the play work out.

I agree the refs were awful. But on the spot of the Daniels run, I assume you mean late in the 4th quarter. That was the correct spot. They showed the replay and he was down just short of the marker. Otherwise, I agree the refs were awful. Specifically the ineligible man downfield on that touchdown. Where was the replay assistance on that play like we saw for the Bucs in week 1? Just an awful job all day by the refs that would have made this game so much more painful if not for the play at the end of the game.

What also made it sweeter. Chicago was coming off a bye. So, they had an extra week to come up with a gameplan to score a whole 15 pts. LOL

Hey. They put a lot of effort into drawing up the play where they hand the ball off to a lineman with the game on the line

Moving away from the Volleyball Hail Mary.

I am honestly so impressed by how much the defense has progressed since Game 1. They were an absolute trainwreck the first few games. Haslett as its worst bad. JDR at his worst bad. We practically pitched to shut outs in a row. Really speaks to the importance of coaching and teaching. Our defense still has holes, but good team defense can overcome a lot.

Serious conspiracy question. Is the reason the refs didn't clear the field and allow the extra point try because if we make it we beat the spread and the refs lose money? The Hail Mary was in regulation. There should have been a kick after.

If time expires and the game is over they don’t kick the extras point. It’s unnecessary. No reason to risk injuring someone

It’s not the same play. It’s an extra play. It’s an untimed down. So you only play it if it can impact the game.

Also the spread was -2.5 at kickoff so, it had already beaten the spread and wasn’t going to impact that either

(I actually took them at +2.5 when the lines opened last week and everyone assumed Daniels wouldn’t play )

Cool. I thought it was a mandatory play. Also, I saw a tweet someone posted that showed that they did not win their bet. They zeroed out.

I get it’s an unpopular opinion - our defense has looked good against bad teams. Our defense is not good. Good teams with good coaches will beat our defense like a drum and our offense will need to lead the way.

We won yesterday in part because chicagos coaches are morons - it’s been a running joke for that staff. They lost the game cause they handed the ball off to a lineman with the game on the line. Swift, Moore, Allen, Williams… all the weapons and they hand it off to a lineman. Their coaching staff has been doing that short of dumb crap and they got what they deserved for it yesterday.

Now if our early drives end in TD’s instead of FG’s, most of which happened because of offensive penalties at bad times, it’s a different story. But penalties happen.

so bad discipline led to almost losing the game. We’re a lot better team than Chicago is, which is why I was not worried about this game.

But our fans have started pumping up this defense because they show up OK against bad teams. We’re going to need to score 30 to beat most of the teams that will make the playoffs this year.

(Someone wrote up a thing earlier in the season about first you win, then you get good. It’s entirely possible that this offense affords this defense enough time to gel and figure it out, that by the end of the season the defense is significantly better.

And any time you’re running an offense that’s a legit threat to score every single drive, that changes how the other teams offense operates and helps your defense.

So maybe it’ll be a better situation by the end of the season but as of right now our defense has great stats against garbage teams and it’s blinding people to the reality.)
