Well - there are HC's who call plays and continue to essentially act as OCs even if there is someone else with that title. So it's not necessarily 'either/or' on that front.

But again, unless Bienemy was brought here with 'an understanding' that if he does well, he'll be the next HC (and I tend to doubt Harris and company would want to hem themselves in in that way), it'll be up to the next GM to decide. And are they really going to want to go with someone with zero experience? Possible, but it's a reasonable question.
 
It seems that more often or not the best HCs are ones who have zero experience. Retreads usually don't work out. There are exceptions like Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Bill Parcels, but more often than not the HC that works out is the new guy not the guy trying to reclaim former glory.

At least that's what it looks like without doing research lol.

I will agree a zero experience coach has a higher bust likelihood, but I also think the experienced coach seems to have a lower ceiling.
 
I'm not really arguing that 'zero experience' Head Coaches are more likely to be busts. I'm just saying it would take a lot of balls with new owners (and we assume a new GM) for them to bring in a guy without an NFL head coaching pedigree. It could be brilliant, and as you said, retreads often can't recreate their previous success (although I think if Mike Tomlin were available we would be insane not to go after him).
 
As I write this, the 49ers have just scored again on the Cowboys. The score is now 41-10.

Yeah, it's petty, but I feel a lot better right now than I did a few hours ago.
 
San Fran is the best team in the NFL and it’s not close.

How two former linebackers can't see this just boggles the mind.

I could keep going but the main problem with this team is a systemic one.
 
Having Kyle Shanahan here and failing to provide him a route to our Head Coaching spot was criminal neglect. Instead we literally run the Shanahans out of town because they hurt Robert Griffin's feelings. Vintage Snyder.
 
I remember having very mixed feelings. I wanted Mike out and thought he not only failed to coach a winner, but quit on the team. At the same time, I thought Kyle had done a really good job. I accepted how it went down because how can you fire the father and keep the son or expect the son to stay?

The Shanny period was a very disappointing one. Record wise, it might have been the worst of the Snyder era. Still, the O was humming.
 
I was never a Mike Shanahan fan, but you don't prioritize a diva QB over a head coach. Of course we'll never know what exactly went down, but knowing Snyder as we do, it's pretty obvious that the owner was empowering Griffin and undermining the Shanahans. It should never have been a question of 'how do we fire Mike Shanahan but convince his son to take over as head coach?'. I have no doubt a savvy owner could've met with Mike Shanahan and come up with a transition plan for him to hand over the coaching reigns to his son.
 
You see it more often than you should especially in the NBA where a star player gets their coach fired. I think Aaron Rodgers managed it too, but you’re right. As important as a franchise QB is, RGIiI hadn’t earned it. He hadn’t done enough to earn that deference.

Put differently, if Pat Maholmes decided he was done with Andy Reid that would put great stress on the chiefs. I don’t know who they’d choose.

Ultimately, Griffin never proved himself to be that important not here, on the Browns, or with the Ravens.
