Official Game Thread - Week 5 - TNF - vs Chicago Bears

Ron Rivera decided to let the guys talk it out among themselves at halftime.

Seriously. Why is he even here?
 
The Bears loss was beyond ugly. That said, let's also not lose sight of the fact that Arizona AND Denver had us on the ropes. This team could just as easily be 0-5.

We might want to believe that we are far superior than the NFL's bottom feeders, but in many regards, we are still swimming right there among them.
 
Agreed Canadian Hog and what’s most indefensible about that is that the fault lies 80% with our defense.

As bad as the oline is, as much as Howell is guilty of sometimes holding the ball too long, as much as we’d like Bienemy to remember that you use rbs as runners… The defense is the problem. And it should be our strength.
 
Ugh. This was WAY worse than the Buffalo loss. That was an elite team. This was a team that was on a 14 game losing streak.

And to put the embarassment even further into perspective, we lost 40-20 despite the fact that for the second half, this 0-4 team had lost it's starting Center and pretty much ALL it's running backs.

This game will likely singlehandedly win me my first Fantasy game this year! I have 80 points just between Howell and Moore!

This was BAD

Nuff said.
 
Man, Terry sounds broken. I don’t blame him, but damn.
 
I can’t recall a time as a fan where I’ve felt this fatigued of rooting for this team and continually getting my heart ripped out. It’s old.

On the not so bright side, that team that just spanked our asses may well get the top two picks in next years draft. 😖

I know I've felt worse about this team. I was actually able to get to sleep pretty easily and in the past that wasn't true. This was an awful loss though. If there's a bright side it probably cements the notion that this franchise does need a front office and coaching tear down. The pretense that all is all right or can become all right with Danny gone is dispelled. Ron can't get it done. He can't make his team good. There's something rotten in the metal he's poured into the mold. No matter how much he hammers that metal it will never become a good piece. Maybe we should have been on guard when Rivera spoke in semi-satisfied terms last week about moral victories. That's what a guy says when he doesn't expect his team to be a competitor.

Hey South Korea you scored fifty against the US in basketball. No one thought you could compete with them, but you hustled and only lost by thirty! Well done you!

I give Ron credit for somewhat wrighting the ship and persevering cancer and Dan Snyder. He made it possible to not abandon ship during some really awful years, but while I was hoping he was Bruce Bueadreau (sp) who reestablished the culture but couldn't finish the job, Rivera has fallen far short of that. I think the pretense is gone. This team is unready and under Ron it will remain unready. It will never be a serious competitor.

It's like I said yesterday, you don't trust Slye to make a 51 yard field goal. Even though he made it I wanted us to go for 4th and 4. We saw Slye miss later on. He flubbed the kick that would have taken us to within a score. We're not automatic enough and the defense isn't good enough to chip away at leads.

Somehow this team will probably wind up 7-10, 8-9, or 6-11. Ron's proven that's his ceiling. He doesn't even have it in him to yell at his team.
 
Who on staff could call our defense? I don't think Harris should be making any moves on the HC and/or GM until after the season, but I wouldn't mind if Rivera got some balls and fired Del Rio now.
 
Our defense has just completely fallen off a cliff, is it because Chase is disrupting the chemistry they built last year? Our secondary isn't doing us any favors either. That was a miserable, gutless performance last night, I'm glad Magic spoke up but now go rip Rivera and Del Rio and new one.

Not sure anyone can do worse. Heck, bring in a junior high school student. They'd develop a more sophisticated plan.

Maybe hiring someone from the Netherlands Curling team. They know more about pressure defense than Del Rio. Hell, you don't even need anyone with sports' experience. Grab someone who works at a pre-k daycare. She'll be used to chasing toddlers and teach these athletes about how to cover.
 
Not related, but it made me laugh and I think we could all use a laugh.

It is because our defense has played like this at the beginning of every season Rivera has been the head coach. In ‘20 and ‘21 we gave up 30+ points for four straight weeks during the first six weeks of the season. Last year wasn’t as bad but we did give up 21+ during four straight losses during the first five weeks … our worst defensive stretch of the season.

The defense always plays like this at this time of year. Four years in, there’s no excuse for it.
