Official Game Thread - Week 5 - TNF - vs Chicago Bears

Yeah, that is just a dumb stat. I get individuals can have good games, but for all the highest graded players to be on the lines is comical.

Richard Sherman pointed out something similar at halftime. Showed the safeties not being where they needed to be in time to make plays. Especially on those deep passes to Moore. He was perplexed the safeties were hanging in the middle of the field and not moving towards Moore. The tape is out now. Teams have figured out to throw deep.

Enjoy the last 12 Ron.

You wonder if he and Jack decided the writing was on the wall and were going through the motions. I kind of think they haven't been because of the rallies, but... yeesh it'd almost be better for them if they were checked out.

I know people are asking for heads to roll, but I suppose I am fine with allowing Ron to stand on the sidelines with his arms crossed for 12 more games. Did I preferably want him out this morning? My anger certainly did. However, keeping Ron there as a placeholder allows Bienemy to provide undivided attention to Howell and his growth. Let those two work one-on-one, as opposed to EB taking over interim duties and having to wear multiple hats. That potentially affects the maturation process. Big picture - we need a QB for everything else to fall into place here. Focus the energies of who seems to be the only coach on this staff worth a damn (EB) solely on that piece of the puzzle and go from there come the offseason. As for JDR, this situation now is far beyond just being a dust up. Send him out on the next train if you think the season is still salvageable.

I told Sam (my son) when Snyder sold the team that things aren’t going to change overnight. This is still Snyder’s team, just like 1999 was still Cooke’s team. It may be a year or three before things really start to change. I see no point in firing people right now. It might make us feel better but the real change is going to come this offseason.

You guys make a lot of sense. I think it's important that Bienemy be able to focus on Howell as well. And unless you have someone 'better' in the wings, firing coaches to make a point isn't likely to work out well. JDR is frustrating. But his defenses do tend to improve as the season progresses, and who do we have that is realistically going to do a better job? If the Harris group is going to bring in a GM and house clean this offseason, it doesn't make much sense to blow anything up early season.

Plus, how many interim coaches end up being kept for the main job at 5he end of the year? Would Bieniemy even want it without a multi-year commitment? Would Harris handcuff any future higher up preemptively?

I believe Harris will let it play out and also believe that he should.

I have to wonder if the Harris group and/or the GM we assume they will bring in will want to entrust this gig to an unproven head coach?

They may have no choice - if there is no 'wow' head coaching candidate out there with a proven track record of success. Who might that be? Most coaches with that kind of success and track record are, well, head coaches :)

I've thrown Mike Tomlin's name out there. There have been rumblings over the past couple of seasons in Pittsburgh that they may be considering a change. I would be thrilled to have a guy like Tomlin here. All his teams have done over the years is win and get to the playoffs. The Steelers have been to the playoffs in 10 of their 16 previous seasons under Tomlin. I don't know if that's the best in the NFL, but I suspect it is.

We don't even know if Bienemy is a top OC at this point - do we? I like what I see, and he seems to be a great fit with Howell assuming we continue with him in the future. But HC - that's a whole other level. He may be the next great one, but who knows. That'll be for Harris and whatever GM he hires to decide.

The other thing to consider is what happens if this thing spirals out of control (and it is not out of the realm of possibilities given the way this defense has played) and this team finds itself picking in the top five in April. The QB prospect pool is extremely deep. At that point, you have to decide if said prospects offer you more potential than Sam Howell long term. If they do, then you aren't even necessarily tied to EB for the sake of continuity in regards to the QB's development. Ultimately, it all circles back to the GM. Harris' decision there will loom large and directly help shape the success of this franchise for the next five to seven years.

Meh. This team wins 8 or so games. Throughout Rivera’s tenure they’ve lost to bad teams and beat good ones. Consistency is the problem.

My main concern at this point is Howell. He will not survive the season getting banged around like this. As bad as the defense has been playing the OL is worse. They’ve gotta figure something out.

The Howell argument for not firing Rivera is really interesting. What's more important for this team going forward? Bienemy's ability to mentor and groom Howell or discovering whether Bienemy might just be a great head coach for us.

Not knowing what Harris has in mind in terms of the GM or any coach, right now I'm intrigued by Bienemy as the heir apparent. Ironically, Ron has really talked him up and described how he's changed practices, elevated intensity, etc. and while the early results are mixed the offense has grown from bottom third to middle of the pack despite having a first year QB, a first year OC, and no offensive line to speak of.
