McCloughan's draft plan

This may be a good draft to move down if we can find a partner at the right price.

People point to Cooper and guys like Collins but these guys have questions.

Cooper is 6'1 and 205 but he is a 4.53 guy? By today's standards he's not that big or that fast.

Collins is an in the box safety. That's not a top 15 'get' in the draft.

We need a pair of safeties that can run AND tackle.

Speed in the secondary has been a big problem here.

I don't know whether the team will restructure Pierre Garcon, keep him at $9M for 2015 or release him, but I would favor looking at positions such as DL, OL, CB, S and OLB on the first day.

I'm mostly with you here... I'll add DE picks scares the bejesus out of me. I don't like that a couple mocks have us taking a safety. So many other teams find safeties in other rounds. Ugh.
 
If our first pick isn't an immediate starter, we BLEW the pick. Am i understanding you correctly - you don't think our 1st round pick will start in 2015?
 
Of course there's the chance that Williams, Mariota, Winston, or whoever may drop to being available at #5 which might make some teams hot for one of those guys pick up the phone on draft day and start offering multiple lower picks to us for that slot which, given McLuvin's history may be tempting.

With the seriousness of Mariota's injury in the National Championship just now shedding light, I can definitely see him falling. The unfortunate part of that is that the chance of getting a trade partner now that we know Mariota won't be throwing at the combine is also lessened.
 
I thought it was an ominous sign that after the 2014 draft that Bruce Allen said the EXPECTATIONS were that NONE of the top picks (Murphy, Moses or Long) was a good bet to be a starter during the upcoming season.

For a team finishing 3-13 and with a dearth of talent across the board those first few picks have to come in and make a solid contribution and look as if they belong.

#2 and #3 picks are not like #7 picks where you expect them to take a couple of years to develop very raw skills and become contributors.

If we take #2 and #3's that are not close to seeing the field then we are selecting the wrong players.

Wow, just wow.......how does he have any cred on coaching/front office if he can't tell how bad our players are? Guess he thinks the reason for our record is front office and has nothing to do with players who can't play/start for any teams. Reality check time.
 
I can't wait for the rebuild to start in earnest. The turnover on the roster will make last year pale in comparison. What we need, the doctor says, is a transplant. Many transplants.
 
Let's not nit pick on Taylor. The valid point is that he made plays as soon as he got out on the field, and that was pretty quickly into his first season.

I agree with Keim that the Redskins have so many places to upgrade it is difficult to see a high pick with real ability NOT coming in and making a noticeable contribution.

Enter Lake Dawson, who worked with McCloughan when they were both in the personnel department with the Seattle Seahawks. Dawson joined the Seahawks as a Pro Personnel Assistant in 2001, and by 2007 when he left for the Titans, he was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. McCloughan was Seattle's Director of College Scouting from 2000-2004. Dawson was responsible for overseeing both the pro personnel and college scouting departments under GM Ruston Webster with the Titans.

Now you're just parsing words. I'll say it again, any team who drafts a guy at pick #5 and doesn't start him (with the exception of a QB - and even then...) probably blew the pick.
 
It would depend on the depth of that position also
There was a timeline I seen can't find it now but it lists when a draft pick should be starting 1-20 by the eight game 21- so and so 9-20 some games etc

of course there will always be those exceptions that happen
 
True, but again it's rare to see a GM say right after the draft that he doesn't necessarily expect his top picks to challenge for starting jobs on a team that finished 3-13.

have to agree w/Boone on this one....with the exception of QB depending on team circumstances.

EL...even Chip Kelley? No idea but he has that connection.
 
Even if it isn't Mariota, any player graded that high in the draft is usually considered an exceptional talent no matter what position and thus attracts a lot of interest from needy teams and thus such a tempting target that teams may be willing to trade lower picks, or picks from upcoming drafts-McLovin nas done those kind of trades also. This is why I would not be all that surprised to see us trade down to get additional picks especially if some team wants to bet the house on a top 5 player.
