Not that I don't understand your point, but just how long do we wait for him to work it out? No, I didn't expect to be going to the super bowl this season, but I have a real problem waiting on a QB to warm up for 7 or 8 games that has more then a full season under his belt as a starter. We have two rookie QB's, and one under a new coaching staff no less that are playing above and beyond Kirk in our division. The Giants are going to beat us up and take our milk money this weekend if Kirk doesn't get his issues fixed. Not going to the super bowl, and being a laughing stock are very far apart. My point of benching him late in the 4th was as a wake up call, and a chance to salvage a win. Yes, play calling was less then desirable in the red zone, and it amplified the situation greatly. Lets see where game three leaves us....
 
Even if Cousins improves enough to once again be a capable starter, but not elite, are the Redskins going to give him $24M for next year or a multi-year deal with $60-$75M in guarantees?

I highly doubt it.

Either way you slice it I think the club is moving on in 2017.

The whole episode with Cousins, Robert Griffin and the qb position with this team continues to develop like a soap opera.
 
I dont know anything about anything, but it seems to me that if your QB is struggling, asking him to throw the ball more than anyone else in the entire league ... literally, more than any other player in the entire NFL ... is a bad idea. Rather than just pulling him from the game, perhaps ... oh I dont know ... running the ball more than 15 times a game might take some of the pressure off his shoulders until he feels like he can completely and utterly carry the team all by himself. It is possible he may never feel up to that task, and that SHOULD be ok. I would think that, expecting a fourth round pick starting his second full season to play like an elite QB based a nice half-season run, to be a failing on the part of the coach, not the QB.

Didn't say my rights were being infringed. Just noting the difference between now and most of the previous 7 years. It's all good brother.

But it's beyond disappointing that the 1st 2 games of a promising season look like The Loser's first season as head coach. We look unprepared, undisciplined, uninspired, unimaginative, and incapable of doing anything about it. If I hang on to last years late season run, against marginal competition, I could maybe give some benefit of doubt. But last year is gone. This year, so far, we look like a monkey ****ing a bowling ball on defense. Players arguing and needing to be separated on the sidelines in the first game was special. Most snaps it looks like half the guys are looking to someone else asking what their assignment is. And, as has been the case from day one, an offense that has no ability to consistently execute even a high school caliber running attack, with no ****ing clue what a "Plan B" is.

Unacceptable in year 3.

Could it all turn good, starting this weekend? Of course it could. But, instead of holding my breath, I'm gonna entertain myself, blowing off the steam.
 
Fair enough. And don't misunderstand - I am not predicting anything. I could see this season going either way. Im only arguing that nothing is certain or predestined.

I agree, the coach is the root problem, and I've been on the need to run the ball more bus since last season. I agree, it would take a huge amount of pressure of Kirk. But when the coach and OC are unwilling to try any type of sustained running attack, what's to be done if all you do is pass, and you'r QB is having problems. Tank the season ? Hope the QB figures it out when the deck is stacked against him. Do you honestly believe Gruden will commit to the run any time in the near future ? If you don't know anything about anything, I know less. I do know Gruden doesn't use running as an intriguing part of the game, and that is killing the team. He's put it on Kirk, but in the end, playing to win is still the goal, and it was clear Kirk wasn't up to the task. He's got to figure how to do it on his own... without a running game. Benching him could make or break him... but he's already broken due to the system not giving him the support. Beyond that, running game or not, he's had pretty good pass pro and time in the pocket, but isn't seeing the field. He's locking in on guys, while other are often running open or would be if he waits another second and a half. Low and high throws, late throws, over throws and under throws. I don't expect these type of issues from a QB that had almost a half season subbing for the starter, and a full season as starter. I expect this from a 4th round rookie, not the guy who blew away the league with his amazing play late last season.
 
Oh, and if I had given up on the season already, do you honestly think I would be so pissed, and yelling to try something different.... anything....
 
Well it's been a disappointing start I grant you. :(

However I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. Not with the team or Kirk.

Personally I thought it was a mistake not to have Kirk play much pre-season. Our running game still didn't look great in those pre-season games and I was secretly concerned about rust being an issue for QB and the offense.

My other thoughts predominantly during pre-season was that our Defense isn't going to be that much better, but I hoped a step forward might be in order. I thought we were an 8-8 team, maybe 9-7 if lucky.

Now granted I haven't seen the games in huge detail as I've been holidaying...but my thoughts currently are:

The Defense is a bit of a mess. Now week 1 was against a very good QB and an elite WR, so while I still scratch my head a little over how we played cover on Brown, it wasn't totally unexpected that we'd be beaten. Plus our offense (read QB for that) showed the rust I'd feared. Still I was disappointed rather than hugely concerned at that poing.

This week I found much more concerning. We were at home against a rookie QB and a rookie RB. Granted that OLine has a good rep, but I thought we might be able to at least confuse or harry Prescott. But while I think our Offense started to track more and the rust started to fall off a little, our Defense looked decidedly shonky at times.

I felt like that win was there for the taking. At home, after a humiliation at home the week before and with a rokie QB And RB... I felt like we should have had that. And to have Alfred be the one to put the nail in the coffin for us.... Ouch!

And our schedule only gets more brutal as we go forwards.

I'm keen to see how the Offense starts to fire this week. And if the defense doesn't turn up the wick soon I could see Barry being the first to go when the heat starts.
 
I'm so bummed I didn't even watch most of game 2. I was never that optimistic about our record going into this season but I expected some additions like Norman to be used correctly and thought we might see an uptick in some areas. I've never been sold on Cousins though, this current stuff is his M.O. and has been for years unfortunately. With this bumbling coaching staff I don't see that changing. So next year will probably be a huge coaching purge with another gigantic overhaul and a new QB - blah blah blah...I'm running out of stamina as a fan.
 
I still think part of the issue here with the Redskins is the relative inexperience of most of the coaches in decision-making roles.

This is Gruden's first HC job in the NFL, this is Sean McVay's first OC job in the NFL and Joe Barry was a complete surprise as pick for DC given his short and rather inglorious tenure in Detroit.

Jay does not have a broad perspective, he seems wedded to a very specific program he wants to run regardless of the talent and experience level of the players on the team.

Joe Gibbs and Bill Parcells may have come into jobs with schemes they wanted to run and assumptions about how qbs should play, etc. but in the end they had to adjust their playbooks to the skills of the players they inherited.

After 5 games in 1981, Joe Gibbs realized he was not going to win games in the NFL trying to graft the Air Coryell offense on a Redskins team that had players with other skills.

Parcells was a run first guy in New York, then switched up and threw a lot more in New England with Bledsoe, and then went back to a more conservative short passing game with Chad Pennington.

Gruden has a quarterback in Cousins that is not in the same class as Drew Brees or Tom Brady from the neck up.

These other players have tons of confidence in themselves and can bounce back from adversity. Kirk seems to allow the cumulative pressure to mount on him so that he ends up making mistakes and being less effective.

So, you need to develop a running game here that is effective and can take some of the pressure off Cousins throwing the ball 40 times a game.

Besides, right now the receiving corps has its limitations.

Doctson is behind after missing the entire offseason program as a rookie. It's going to take him awhile.

Jackson is a great deep threat but is not the guy you look to deliver those catches on third and four over the middle to convert first downs.

I think Garcon has lost some speed as he really doesn't gain that much separation as he did when he first came here from the Colts. He's physical and he can go up and win the battle in the air for a pass, but the DB is usually right there in case the pass is off target even a few inches.

Unfortunately, Jordan Reed is now being TRIPLE covered in the red zone and teams are not going to allow him to beat them.

Gruden needs to take all this in and work Jones. He also needs to change things up and bring in Robert Kelley who seems to run between the tackles better than either Jones or Thompson.

He might not have breakaway ability, but he is capable of moving the chains and helping to wear a defense down.
 
I think our WRs are just fine. Doctson looks like a rookie, but other than that I don't see any limitations on this group. They are excellent and decidedly not the problem.

I also don't see a rush to bring in Kelley. I'm not sold on Jones, but it's not exactly like he's had a chance to do anything yet. Let the guy run the ball a little, consistently behind an actual single-back formation. I suspect he'll be productive enough. as long as he doesn't get hurt. That's what Kelley's for.
 
Being a pass dominant team is fine with me. But if that's your core offense you need to hit wide open deep routes consistently and not throw INTs in the endzone :). It's less about approach than it is execution imho. We didn't miss those plays because we weren't running enough (setting aside that we aren't running enough). If we were a run dominant team but couldn't open up rushing lanes consistently or fumbled on the red zone it would be the same issue.

Try? There is no try. Execute or do not execute.

Quite simply, if the pass isn't working, for whatever reason, you need to be able to go to the run. If your defense tends to give up long drives and wear out late in games, you need to be able to go to the run. You don't have to be awesome at it, but you have show SOME measure of flexibility with your game plan.

First in the league in pass attempts, last in rush attempts. With a defense that can't get off the field. And a struggling QB.

Not sure what else to say.
 
From what I understand, Gruden told Kirk to "get his act together, this game is not that hard." I think Gruden has just shortened the leash to the collar.

Possibly trying to loosen the noose around both their necks. There's definitely stuff that goes on that the public doesn't know about. Might a FO fire a coach and keep a player and leave the rest of the world scratching their head? It happens. Or vice-a-versa which also happens. Or nothing at all happens. I suspect that the current GM just might be shortening some of his own leashes and that last option is off the board.
 
Kirks a good play action passer. I believe he'll flourish with a decent run game and struggle when it's entirely on his shoulders.
