Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Cousins killed us yesterday. I mentioned late in the game chat he should have gotten sent to the bench, with Colt finishing out the game.

If Cousins gets benched, I would be more in favor of putting in Sudfeld, because if Kirk isn't with us next year, there is a possibility that Suds could be the man to replace him. And the sooner we find out, the better. And the sooner he gets regular season game experience, the better. It's may be stretching it to say it's possible Suds could be our future, but stranger things have happened. And it would be good if we were ready for it, when it's time to happen.

We already know what we have in Colt. But we don't yet know what we have in Suds.

You don't bench Cousins during Game Two if you want anything to happen this season.

If we think he's a QB worth keeping, you gotta let him work this out. We weren't going to the SB this season anyway. Let the season play out and see what kind of a QB he really is.

I was thinking in terms of late in the season, if/when it's obvious that Cousins has major issues, and if/when it's obvious that we're not making the playoffs.....but if you talk to some people around here, they will tell you that the season is already lost, and there's no chance we make the playoffs after starting 0-2, lol

Agreed up to a point. To me the man is only really "struggling" in the red zone. Between the 20's, he's largely looked solid. I'm hopeful the red zone issues are something where he's either not on the same page with Sean, or defenses have figured a book on him down there that he'll have to overcome, or his head is going to Rio for some reason we haven't learned yet, or something else entirely, that is, ultimately, fixable. We've seen what he can do down there ... he was incredible last year. You have to give him several more weeks to try to get it right.

If we're halfway into the season, though, and we're hanging on to playoff hopes by the Skins of our teeth at 3-5 or something, and he's still obviously having problems in the red zone, before you go to Sudfeld I think you HAVE to go to Colt for as long as we're mathematically--if not realistically--alive. You do that for the other 61 guys on the roster who have a vested interest in the team remaining competitive as well. The locker room at 3-5 would be shaky at best already ... throwing in the towel on the rest of the season just to take a look at the rookie, particularly given Colt has had some success here, to me would be throwing jet fuel on a bonfire.

I've been a little surprised with this team having demonstrated as recently as last season that we shouldn't give up on them after a rough start, that so many are giving up on them after a rough start. And please don't tell me 'no ones giving up on them' - because clearly a number of fans are.

I'm not judging, I'm just surprised at the level of pessimism. I do think the level of 'suckitude' we've seen is being exaggerated by many.

I haven't given up but while I could write off the loss to the Steelers as getting beat by a better team, both in terms of talent and coaching, I can't do that with Dallas. We lost to a rookie QB on a team run by a perennial .500 head coach, and we lost at home after getting embarrassed on national TV. And none of that takes into account that it was a rivalry game that we really should have been up for.

Did I see some good things? Oh yeah. The defense made some key stops and surprised me in good ways several times.

But it is hard to be anything but pessimistic right now. Everything set up right for Kirk to pick up where he left off last year...no big upheaval on the O-line (which is getting good pass pro), all the old dependable receivers back plus a shiny new first round draft pick to throw to, no real controversy after Griff's release, and no change over in coaching or philosophy. By any measure, Cousins should be hitting it out of the park and he has totally reverted to the guy who struggled the first 8 games last year.

We spend big money in the defensive backfield to shore up coverage but did nothing to help the front 7 get more pressure on the QB. Unless Smith blossoms on the outside and Murphy turns into a world better at DE, we are going to have issues getting pressure all season. The run defense is not even worth taking about. We were in the game on Sunday because Garrett can't figure out how to stick with the run.

It's tough to be upbeat today, brother.

What Bulldog said, the added pressure of a long term deal is rearing its ugly head. Kirk can't seem to handle it or......he was totally unprepared for the start of the season. There is no substitute for practice and I mean practice games.

Also agree totally with El, afraid we may have seen kirk at his peak, and this aint it. He just isn't clutch. That is evidence by his easy to move the ball between the 20's but not redzone. Last year I felt that the success we had in the redzone was brilliant play calling. Now the coaching has totally gone to hell, along with the decision making and execution of the QB.

Kirk doesn't have to be elite, but he does have to make the timely impact play to be successful. The a hole is way too tight and he is staring down the receiver. Plus has this stupid propensity to not see a defender when he zeros in on the WR. That has got to stop immediately. Like El said, this ain't his second game.

Yeah, I don't know that I've given up on 2016 either. But the reality of 0-2, Kirk's regression and confirmation our D is still iffy has been a pretty cold bucket of water. My biggest hope going into the season was that we'd pick up closer to where we left off last regular season than looking like we may spend the year just trying to get back there. That's a big adjustment.

That said ... when we were 1st and goal from the 6, leading 23-20 with less than 11 minutes in the 4th ... I thought we were going up 10 and the game was in hand. We'd be headed to NY next week looking to maybe steal one on the road, then coming home to kick Cleveland's ass and start 3-1 despite the early struggles. Worst case we were going to be 2-2 after the first four games. Instead, well ... we know what happened. Still trying to reset the bar on expectation for just how much headway we're likely to make this year if Kirk Cousins turns out not to be what we all hoped and many expected him to be just two weeks ago.

Now, we go up to NYC and get a win--by any means necessary--and that cold bucket of water is chilled champagne all over again.

Kirk had a year all to himself. There's no excuse for his performance thus far. Every QB has a bad game or two, but that's not what we saw. He appears uncomfortable. I think he's pressing too much due to the contract, but in any case, after a year under center I expect more from him. I don't need him to be a world beater and carry the team, just make the throws when they are there.

The 2nd half of the season last year doesn't make Kirk a franchise QB. Neither does a shaky start the first 2 games of this season make him a bust. Seriously - the harshest thing I can say about him in the Dallas game is that he missed 2 or 3 deep balls, and threw a horrific red zone INT. That's a bad game. But I'm not qualified to psychoanalyze him like other Redskins fans and determine 'he's a headcase', 'he is mentally weak', etc...

The bottom line for me is that it doesn't matter how bad this team has looked the first 2 games, it IS just 2 games. As demonstrated last year, this team can rally and turn it around. It IS possible. You don't have to convince me that the first 2 games sucked bad - I watched :) My point is - those 2 games aren't definitive. I know I'm in the minority (or possibly alone) in that mindset.

If it makes you feel any better, these past two games haven't changed my outlook for the team at all.

...

... that probably doesn't make you feel any better. :)

Even if they lose next week I won't give up on the team but the reality of that is they would be 0-2 in the division which will be pretty hard to get to even .500. I'd probably give up any hope that they would get any closer to the playoffs than front row seats but wouldn't quit on the Skins. It's too early in the season to crown anybody with anything just yet but the team is digging a pretty deep hole for themselves.

Last year Kirk started out slow and didn't have much poise in the pocket and then got well after 6 games. So far, same thing this year but as long as he gets out of his tailspin sooner than last year he'll be OK. Redskins still may lose for other reasons but Cousins will be off the hot seat and that's really all he can do - but do it he must.

But, like Steve said - Cousins and the team should have been more in sync and really no excuse for Kirk. It's not the loses it's the mental errors that he's had so far. Locking to the #1 receiver and just going to him no matter what in the first two games. That's been obvious. These guys weren't and still aren't ready for the season until they prove other wise. False starts - and Jay says they just have to get OLine to know the snap counts better. There's a time for that and it's called pre-season.

It seemed pretty obvious in watching Kirk this season that his mind isn’t where it needs to be. He seems to live and die with every throw. It kinda reminds me of John Smoltz (stick with me here). In the early 90’s he was a talented pitcher who couldn’t get right. By his own admission he would dwell on mistakes to the point where it would influence his next pitch. His failures would then snowball. He eventually worked with a sports Psychologist, which was nearly unheard of at the time, and learned to focus on the positive. He said it saved his (Hall of Fame) career.

Yes, it sounds simple enough but some people need help to conquer this kind of stuff. No shame in that. Hell, at this point I’m willing to pay for his first session out of my own pocket.

Giving up, and losing confidence in, are two different animals. I've never given up on this team. In fact, I'm one of the few that has always stayed positive. Especially during the Snyder era. So, I don't need to be reminded what CAN happen. I've been told more times than I care to remember to back off the pessimists. That they have their right.

Well then, I have my right to say that my confidence in this coaching staff is all but gone. I was one of the more confident people here heading into the season. I know full well things can turn for the better, on a dime. But as of today, it doesn't look good. I expect NY to hang 50 on us Sunday. And I think we'll struggle to make 20. I'm not even sure we can beat the Browns.

Jay Gruden is a losing coach. He'll have to finish 11-3 from here out to not still have a losing record as a head coach. He's earned no benefit of doubt.

And nobody on the planet will be happier than me if he proves me wrong.

Nobody.

So, we are #1 in the league in pass attempts and #32 in rush attempts. It might be a good idea to run the ball a liiiitle bit more ... maybe just until our QB gets his head right.

Just a thought. :)

Too obvious Henry.

We should just abandon the run. Get rid of all the running backs, and sign more linemen.

Lighten up Ax - no ones infringing on your rights for Gods sake. I'll post whatever I want, and you are free to do the same :)

Thanks for being the voice of reason Boone.

I hang in there until the elimination game, no matter what the odds. But I would like to point out some grim numbers reality.

39-65 pts for/against. If this is true indicator, are we really expecting Kirk and the O to bring us 33 pts a game in order to post a winning record? That's a tall order.

14 games remaining. OK really, need 9 of 14 to have a remote chance. That's a tall order considering two teams now have a two game edge. ouch.

5-6 game run to finish. Looking at the schedule that appears more brutal than ever. That's a tall order.

What keeps me positive is that most all the teams are equal, you can flip a coin for the victor. But we seem to be back to finding a way to lose, and with all games being close we should be winning some of them. For some reason, it ain't happenin. Coaching should make a difference there and its not happening.

Figures that would be what we would do. We must avoid that temptation at least for this week. It must be air it out. Giants stuffed the Dallas run against a formidable line. I don't think we need to go there this week since we be weak in the run anyways. my .02
