I might not feel as passionately as you on this, and I'm sorry for all of those who feel very let down today, (I just don't have it in me emotionally to care that much), but I completely agree, the fact you can't actually figure out what a Commander is and come up with a logo is the biggest issue.

Same thing with the Titans. Which is how they ended up with a stupid flaming thumbtack as a logo. I will say, I think the block W is better than the flaming T. But that's not saying much.

Not surprised... and I'm still rooting for this team. I'd like to think this will put an end to all the "news" stories on social media regarding the name, but probably not.
 
I am a combination of disappointed and relieved at this revelation. Disappointed that we are not going to get a "better" name than Commanders, one that we all hoped would provide either a direct or indirect link to the past brand. Relieved that the owner has given me what I wanted on the topic...a definitive answer.

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Washington D.C. I can drive from my house to the city in less than 30 minutes. My earliest memory of the team, as I'm now approaching 50 is Riggo's Super Bowl run. I know I watched the team before, but that is the earliest memory that sticks out for me now. I am as diehard as they come, and the truth is no matter what the name, this was always going to be my team. I am a hometown guy. In the other thread I mentioned how I thought Commanders was a name that makes sense for this area, and I still believe that it does. There are worse names than Commanders...the biggest problem for people is that it is a polar shift from everything that came before. Other than the color scheme there isn't a hint of the Washington Redskins in this brand. Hopefully with the uniform tweaks that are coming that will change. The people I feel most for are the fans who were fans of the team because of their Native American branding. You are the true losers in this situation.

Josh Harris and his ownership group are very smart business people. I think they just looked at the issue and believed it was not one worth tackling again for among other reasons getting into prolonged trademark battles with their holders. Every name that we all said we wanted is already trademarked by somebody else....and they weren't going to just give it to them. They weren't going to change the name just because Snyder picked it either. They certainly don't care about that as much as some of the fans do. Branding the team to a name that nobody wanted cost them 20 million. Imagine what it would cost to brand a team to a name everybody likes or wanted?

I don't blame anybody that doesn't accept this. Continue calling them the Redskins, no judgement here. I get it completely. On the other hand, time heals all wounds. Eventually nobody is going to be around that cares the team is called Commanders, and the fact the team used to be called Redskins will eventually just be a tidbit in sports history books. Especially if this team wins a few more Super Bowls to compliment the original three. I compare this situation to the Browns moving to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens, or the Oilers moving to Tennessee and becoming the Titans. Eventually, people just stop caring. For a while, everybody gave Baltimore fans shit that they were "the Browns." Now that team is entrenched here as well, and nobody even remembers or cares they were once in Cleveland.

For me, I will do my best to embrace the name and look. I will buy the gear, with one exception. I will not buy anything that states Washington Commanders with the Washington Redskins Super Bowl logos until the Commanders win this franchise it's 4th Lombardi. When they reach the highest peaks as the Commanders that their Redskins predecessors did; I will embrace that name with the franchises Super Bowl history. Not until.

Another name change was a no win situation. There will always be a vocal segment of the fan that will complain constantly about it. I understand people hate it. Part of that I think was the quarter-assed roll out three years ago. Like everything under Snyder, it was cheap and poorly planned.

However, I’ve forced myself to call them Commanders the last few years and it’s becoming the norm. I’m glad Harris put this whole debate to rest. We can worry about things that really matter: free agency, the draft, the stadium. Harris does those well, no one will care about the name…except the name nuts who still think Redskins can come back.
 
God bless those of you that can resist buying Commanders stuff. I initially was very put off by it, still dont love it, but I made amends with it the moment Dan sold the team. Getting way too old to keep caring about a crappy football team. If a new dorky name, means I get a new competent adult of an owner - so be it.

Life is too short. This season was fun as hell, and whether you like it or not - it’s seen as a Commanders season, not Redskins. And as our young stud QB blossoms into super stardom with this team along for the ride, the figurative nail will be put in the Redskins coffin. The name is like an old friend that passed way too soon, but we always have the memories.

I just want to win some football games.

There is a massive segment of fans (name nuts) who know Redskins was never coming back and yet hate ‘Commanders’. I’m amazed you dismiss that so quickly. I do agree it’s good he put it to bed finally. He couldn’t even sack up and do it the first time he was asked today. He had to be asked a straight yes or no follow-up question before he could finally muster a straight answer.
 
I gather this is likely a real unpopular take, but almost every team name is generic. Ours wasn’t but it was pretty much the sacrificial lamb for Snyder’s ousting. There will never be one particularly name that the majority of fans would get behind. There is a large risk in going for a new name and brand so soon, likely bigger than keeping and improving on what we already have.
 
I think that’s a fair take. But when you buy a team for $6 billion with the most disaffected fanbase in the NFL, risk comes with the purchase. It was not a great situation for the Harris Group to be in. But it was also an opportunity to create something legendary that cleansed the past and set us out on a bright new future under a new banner we could all get behind. They weren’t up to the task apparently.

Hopefully we get there even if it’s under one stained with Snyder/Jason Wright era ineptitude.
 
Something else to consider here as well is the hand the NFL at large probably had in this whole thing. From the initial change to the rebrand. I suspect it’s likely they will not allow Josh to rebrand again even if he wanted to change. Harris does not strike me the kind of person who is going to throw his fellow owners under the bus either. If that is the reason… we will never know. I think it’s fair to surmise the NFL owners and by default Goodell don’t believe that there’s anything wrong with the name Commanders. They probably think the fans will accept all this eventually. Our generation will grow old and check out. The young generation will be what we are now.

Well if you think Redskins isn’t coming back you’re not a Name Nut.

I think it’s fair to say you’re rather biased on this subject, so you’re going to exaggerate the “massive segment.” You know why it seems like a massive segment? Because they don’t shut up about it. They call into the radio. They whine incessantly on Twitter/X. In my opinion, it’s not any different than the people who stood up on their soap box and demanded the name be changed originally.

The last time we engaged on this topic, there was a study into the name, correct? Maybe this is what they found? That it wasn’t worth cost and hassle? Harris doesn’t seem like a knee-jerk, impulsive owner. Perhaps this is what’s best for the brand, despite how you feel about the name.

They brought in a branding expert. The name is going to suck and be unpopular no matter what they choose. So it’s better to allocate the resources to building the current brand then going after another, unpopular brand, and doing it all over.

Fix the uniforms first and foremost—we all agree, I think, those white jerseys suck hot ass.
