Sadly, what I get out of that article is that Ron was so convinced that Carson was the guy that he ignored his own draft board to protect Carson's ego.

Both things are an indictment of Rivera's abilities.

I saw a lot of what I would call Rivera backfilling the story in the details of that article.

Ron is the perfect example of why the 'coach-centric' model doesn't work in most cases.

There are the unicorns out there like Reid, Belichick, Parcells, etc. that can make it work and not let the on-field coaching overwhelm the personnel side.

Usually with these coaches its the personnel side that suffers the most when they get in over their heads, and Ron fell into this trap.

A really good GM doesn't go after a 39 year old Ryan Fitzpatrick and then a 30 year old Carson Wentz to be the primary passers on an NFL football team.

Not if you want to win many games in today's NFL.

What has changed is that the NFL Ron grew up in was far less dependent upon the quarterback. The rules allowed defenses when he played to effectively shut down offenses with aggressive play up front and being very physical in the secondary.

The rules changes make the NFL regular season games a couple of steps forward of flag football for the quarterbacks. You can't touch them for the most part and receivers get the benefit of the doubt on the majority of contested balls where there is contact.

So, smart GM's move to acquire a franchise quarterback and offensive line FIRST and then build out a defensive line and corners to slow down opposing offenses. But at no time is a guy like Reid expecting that ANY defense is going to shut down an offense completely.

That's how we get to a 38-35 Super Bowl where the Eagles clearly superior defense was essentially defeated in the second half by a quarterback. And one playing on a bum foot.

Couldn't agree more. He seemed sincere in the way he answered how he has a drive to win in everything. Sometimes you hear people say that it just feels like 'rah rah' type of stuff. But that does seem to fuel him.

I have to say, the one thing Rivera has done right is create a good culture and populate the team with high character guys.
I’m trying to think of a bad apple on the team, and coming up blank. Maybe Davis?

Even more of a reason I wouldn't mind if Rivera took over what Doug Williams has done in the past. Be the 'face' of the franchise. Be seen on the sidelines, do the media tours, basically be a Team President without any football responsibilities. I just don't think he's willing to make that move (purely speculation on my part)

I agree that would be a good spot for him, and also agree he won’t make that move on his own. I think he believes he still has several years of coaching in him. So if he is fired, I think he has one more stop somewhere else. Maybe we are wrong and he’s ready to move into a front office role. But my impression is that he probably still wants to coach and that may not be here next year.

That graphic says 'Time before geting Pressure'. So wouldn't that mean how much time he has in the pocket instead of release time as the person's comment might suggest? And would that mean he had the best pass protection in the league this weekend? Although that seems odd.
