It's really early but I do like what I see in the guy so far. Add the fact that he seems to have the full confidence of the coach and I do think there's cause for a little optimism. Crazy, I know.

I try not to get too excited until we see it in the regular season because I feel like Charlie Brown when it comes to our QB. Heck..I think it took me almost half the season of RGIII's rookie year before I felt like he could keep it up that year. Then that rug was pulled out from under us.
 
If Henry likes him than I must despise him. We can't agree on anything or the rapture occurs.
 
How bizarre would it be if someone on this team lived up to their expectations or in the case of Howell blew past them?

It's hard to imagine this team having a Cinderella story without the qualifiers. I mean Heinicke was an amazing Cinderella story. From living on his sister's couch to a legitimate low level starting QB is an amazing story, but he wasn't able to complete the fairy tale. Lavar Arrington, RGIII, and Chase Young so far were all the same story, the hero Achilles rises to perform amazing feats, but then sooner than anyone imagined gets humbled and fades into obscurity. (I know that's not fair to Chase, but so far he has not come close to fulfilling his story.)

I don't think it's a miracle that a guy started for 3 years in college and has a strong arm and good mobility can get on the field in the NFL.

The 'miracle' is that Snyder is gone and thus with him the impetus to make a stupid trade for a veteran quarterback who's either done or close to being done.

OR walking into the draft room and demanding the team draft a player because he played at the same school his son went to.

Love Ryp but he was a statue who only succeeded in the NFL because he played behind one of the best pass protecting lines of all time and for a coach who understood how to use play-action to set up everything else.

Howell, so far, appears much more mobile and has better touch on the short and intermediate routes.

Honestly, I think Joey T with a bigger arm.
 
Been thinking about it and I’m not sure I have a good comp. The Rypien one doesn’t really ring true for me. Rypien was taller and less mobile. I also, and maybe this is just me, never felt that good about Ryp. In the sense that the position was settled. Every QB we had since Theismann always felt like we caught a small window of lightning in a bottle.

Sam is giving serious long term vibes.

I remember getting fooled into feeling like this with RGIII but in hindsight his skill set and body type were never designed for longevity. Sam seems sturdier and savvier.

Maybe it’s just the romance of the post-Snyder era, but I can’t help feeling like it would be karma to find our long term future QB now Dan’s gone.

I keep thinking there’s pieces in there that look familiar, but not as a whole package.
He feels, to me, a lot like what we hoped Heineke could be if he’d had a better arm.
 
Rypien had a hard time hitting the ocean if he fell out of a boat since it was so close, but he could drop the ball in a 55 gallon drum at 50 yards. I don't see it. Howell has shown to be VERY accurate, not only deep, but short and intermediate as well. The atheleticism is polar opposite.

I usually like Rick Snider, but i can't agree with this.
 
in some ways he reminds me of Kirk, but with a better deep ball.

Anyone watched that Quarterback documentary on Netflix? There’s a bunch of focus on Kirk. Sam seems to have some of those traits.

Hard worker, teammates love him, accurate short to intermediate.

Interesting to see how Sam is under pressure. Kirk had a habit of folding. But Sam already seems to lift his game when the lights are on. Very small sample size, but facing (beating!) the playoff bound Cowboys last year, and being instrumental in snapping the Ravens pre-season win streak are pretty good starts to his pro career.
 
Comps are hard because we are just basing on early impressions with no significant body of work. Only similarity with Cousins I see is that they both are pretty accurate passers.
 
Om has talked a lot about how much more he has learned about and liked Cousins on that series. I watched a bit of it, but I can’t get past the whole ‘yeah, well he is being filmed and knows it, so just how real is he?’ thing.

It’s probably more about me not forgiving him for (imho) being so insincere on his way out of DC.
