Just kicked up my workout in to overdrive. It's the only way I know how.

1.5 miles in the morning
Weights at 2 pm
5k at night with my girl

Drinking is done with almost altogether except one night a week of my choice.

We should be running races here soon.

So am I the only slacker here lately and everyone else is killin it in the gym?
No way, I've had various relatives in town over the past few weeks and have been seriously slacking!!!

This weekend is my 1st big tennis tournament since moving back to California. Due to the massive heat wave we've been experiencing here these past 2 weeks and the extreme heat predicted for this weekend, I dropped out of the singles event and am focusing on women's doubles and mixed doubles. I have to say, one thing nice about prepping back home is being able to drag my dad out to the courts to practice with him and get his input...reminds me of my high school competition days & I love it!

I expect a full story about your adventures on the court..

This morning I feel like a wad of chewed up bubble gum. This mornings run is gonna be interesting to say the least.

Ha, my goal, as with any tennis tournament, is to finish the tournament with all my racquets in one piece and not 1) flung into the bushes and/or 2) broken in half from being smashed on the court ( <--- both of those have happened before, the latter, multiple times...oops).

Proud of ya for getting out there and killing it with your workouts, Mike! The first week back is always the hardest, but so worth it. Keep up the awesomeness :D

Yes, but you do ALL of those things so I want to hear about them!! They are usually some of the best comedy of my day.

Honestly, you watching that extreme weight loss thing got me motivated. I am nowhere near that size but their motivation and determination made me want to hit it again and stop goofing around. I just got an email from Sian this morning saying "if we do one 5K a month we can have a wall full of medals!!" well, I asked for it!

Or just go to the trophy shop and have some made?

Seriously good on everyone who's focused lately. My trainer just sent me new info and gonna hit it again at the end of the week.

Oh Win4Us and Mike, you're too funny  Shouldn't be giving me any ideas about ordering my own trophies...

So, the draw for my tennis tournament just came out today and my mixed partner and I are seeded #1 and my women's doubles partner and I are seeded #1, so we got byed into round 2, which is great since there's an insane heat wave going on here. The less matches we have to play to make it to the finals, the better. Looks like I start playing at 2 tomorrow, so hopefully it will be a long weekend of tennis with no injuries!

I'm obviously crazy and can never say no because I also just got talked into doing a "mud obstacle course run" on Mt. Shasta next weekend with a couple girlfriends. It's a short 5K course, but it's at high altitude and the 1st part is straight uphill I've been informed. Guess it will be good practice for the Tough Mudder, just hoping I make it through injury-free. That's increasingly my objective with any competition I enter the older I get

Apparently I'm feeling social enough this morning that I can actually sit alone in my living room and join in on a discussion or two. :) Clearly in each case I'm talking about myself rather than joining in. Baby steps...

I'm not a workout warrior, just another aging mid-fifties guy trying to find a way to stay ahead of a clearly slower and slower metabolism. I had posted in another thread that I was participating in a biggest loser contest at work. I came in second, losing 38.8 pounds in 10 weeks. The dirty bastard that won was starving himself and looked near death. I consider nearly killing yourself to be cheating, and explained that to him, once he recovered enough to understand what I was saying. :)

Anyway, it was good motivation to get focused and back on track. Low carb diet and running work well for me, as long as I stick to them on a daily basis, and now that I am not focusing on weight specifically, I'm adding some weight work as well. And again, my running and weight work is minimal, compared to some of you guys, but my goal is to try to maintain a healthy weight and lose fat.

Great to read through this thread and see all the success stories! I'll keep checking back for more motivation. :2thumbsup:

40lbs in 10 weeks is nothing to shake a stick at! Good on you..

:) Thanks. I call myself the biggest loser loser.

The reality is that this is the third time I've gone extreme over the years. The first time I lost 100 pounds in 8 months with low carb and exercise. Then I gradually eliminated exercise from my routine and gained 60 back over a few years. I focused and lost that, then had gained 40 back when this contest came up. Now I'm at a point where I have to find a way to suppress my inner idiot, and maintain my routine and keep the weight and fat off. Not fully confident at this point because the inner idiot is strong in this one.

I hope you know that your story is a huge motivator to others as well, whether we're gym warriors or casual fitness enthusiasts. So thank you for sharing and I hope you do it more often! For the record, 38.8lbs in 10 weeks is a major accomplishment. As for the guy who "beat" you, he beat you in competition only. Guaranteed he 1) lost muscle mass if he was starving himself and 2) gained weight back after the competition was over. You did things the right way and will reap the long term benefits :)

After a day of insanely hot tennis matches, my partners and I made it through to both the women's doubles and mixed doubles finals tomorrow. Woohoo!

My whole family was able to make it up to the tournament for my last women's doubles match this afternoon. It was pretty awesome to play with a big cheering section; I haven't played with that much support, well, ever. Having the whole family together this afternoon definitely reminded me why I made the decision to move back to California, what a great day. :)

Did you hear us cheering?!!
Go Katie!

We did it!!!

This morning my female partner and I won the tournament's Women's Doubles in a close match that lasted 2 and a half hours. Undoubtedly the hardest match, psychologically speaking, that I remember playing in recent years: we won a very close 1st set, got our butts kicked in the 2nd set then came back from behind to win a close 3rd set.

Then this evening, my male partner and I took home the Mixed Doubles title! It was the icing on the cake for my weekend.

Feels good to see all my practice pay off :D Anyway, on to the next challenge...

3 a days are getting a little easier. It feels weird only limiting myself to 30 minutes in the gym so I can be home, jump rope, and back on the phones in 60. But I'm doubling up what I do there and taking only half my normal time between sets.

Running is not fun. I can't get how people just relax and don't concentrate on their breath or steps or anything else that can **** them up. But I'm going further now so that helps the motivation.

Also, almost 3 weeks no smoking

Are you using patches and or gum?

Did a little garage workout, alternating jump rope and flutter kicks. Jeebus I'm out of shape at the moment.

Nothing. I am strong willed enough that I quit all drugs and smoking with just dealing and not giving in

Smoking is easy to quit but east to slip back in to also
