Haskins - Going Forward

This is something that can't be overlooked either... Mclaurin might score on this play (I BELIEVE there is a deep safety about 10 yards over the top out of the screen) and instead he throws to a tightly covered Isaiah Wright.

 
Everyone expects a four turnover game by a rookie qb as he learns the NFL but Dwayne still has not had ONE game where you watch and say WOW look at what we have here!

He seems as tentative as Josh Rosen, another top pick that hasn’t been able to figure out the NFL.

He's slow. His play is extremely capricious.

Some of it mental due to lack of preparation.

Some of it is due to his physical limitations.

He also does not hold himself accountable.

He also doesn't seem to take one for the team. That checkdown on the 4th might have been intentional stat padding when everyone else thought it was toss it in the endzone and give someone a chance.

All indicators that he's on the road of Jamarcus Russell, Jeff George, and Ryan Leaf.

If Haskins' attitude caused him to lose the room already, then he's just a carcass for the vultures to clean the meat off the bones.

Snyder’s penchant for meddling at the qb position has haunted this team.

He paid big dollars to bring in Jeff George, a career albatross everywhere he went. The move precipitated Brad Johnson leaving in free agency and winning a Super Bowl in Tampa.

Meanwhile George was cut by Marty after 3 games in 2001 because he had alienated his OL and the entire coaching staff and looked dreadful on the field.

Then there was the fiasco with Griffin. Snyder flew down to Texas and ‘scouted’ Robert and came back determined to force a deal to get him. A suicidal trade to move up in Round 1 and give away the equivalent of a generation of draft choices hurt this team for the past 8 years. That trade is one reason there are few A players on this roster as veterans to lead on the.field.

You never see quality organizations like NE or Pittsburgh or Baltimore trade their future away for any ONE player. It takes a team.

Fast forward to 2019 and the owner is ecstatic to be in position to demand the team select Dwayne Haskins. The only victory for the front office is convincing Snyder not to move up from #15 to take him earlier.

Rivera has been here for 4 games and Haskins is already in trouble due to his own arrogance and immaturity.

But he has been on Snyder’s yacht!

Rivera said today that he's not given up on Haskins.

I think we have already learned a couple of things about Rivera... one of them being, he doesn't speak his real mind to reporters and fans. Any coach can say they haven't 'given up' on a player. That may mean nothing more than 'if Jesus comes to him in the night and turns him into Joe Montana, I'll give him another chance'. My sense is that Haskins not only won't start for this team again, he'll be traded or released before the 2021 season. Just my sense of it.

And Bulldog - did you catch what Rivera said when he described talking to 'Mr. Snyder' about what he planned to do? He said Snyder asked him 'And you're prepared to live with this decision?' That REALLY pissed me off, because like with almost everything Snyder does, it included a veiled implied threat. He could just as easily have said 'I can't stop you Rivera without the entire world condemning me for meddling, but if you don't play my guy and it turns into a disaster, I'll fire your ass so quickly you won't even have time to clear out your desk'. That's exactly what it sounded like to me.
 
Rivera is done with him. He just won’t and can’t say it. Haskins’ pouty pout woe-is-me body language is why. If he’s not communicating with Allen this weekend and is sitting at the other end of the bench by the Defense like he did last season, we’ll really know Haskins just doesn’t get it.
 
I'm willing to give him a bit of a pass on his initial reaction. Pretty humiliating at that age especially to absorb a shock and disappointment, especially one so publicly experienced, with grace and unselfishness. But it'll be interesting to see the rest of the season how he reacts and works and carries himself. He's not going to dress more than likely. So barring injury quite possible we don't see him on a sideline again this season.

I think his attitude has been set up this way and his support system needs to have a coming to jesus.

He 'beat out' Joe Burrow, which means little to nothing to me... but he's probably looking at it like "that dude is ballin out and I'm better than he is!"

In his first and only season at Ohio St he breaks records. Well the competition is not on the same level and Ohio St is a top 5 school, so the talent on the team is vastly better than the rest of the country outside of maybe 3 or 4 schools. Haskins probably doesn't see it that way, instead he sees his accomplishments over all else.

Hes likely talked up and touted to be the no 2 overall pick by his agent and support system. Again I don't think they're doing enough to help mature an immature young man. He sees not going no. 2 to the Giants as a slight... not an opportunity.

He feels he 'earned' the starting position, but we all know it was his from the minute they walked into camp... so now he's probably thinking "man, I beat these guys out, I'm better than them and I'M the one on the bench!?'


I can only speculate on this all, but I know how immature and dumb I was when I was 23. I thought I was immortal... If I didn't get what I wanted it was always someone else's fault.

I wanted him to get the whole season. If the above post is true, he's proven in 4 games what I wanted to give him 16 to clear up...
 
btw, dont be surprised if Belechick makes a play for Haskins leading up to the trade deadline. We'll be lucky to get a 4th for him, but Belechick could bring him to play the 2nd half of the season behind Cam and try to groom him going into next season to compete with Stidham to start.
 
If he doesn’t learn from this, then he will go right on the scrap heap with so many other QBs. It’s so much easier to scheme to you QBs strengths in college. It’s why there are so many college QBs putting up video game numbers. The pro game is different. Not only is the talent better, but coaches specifically design defenses to take away what you do best. He needs to realize that and put the time in to learn that. Whatever he is or isn’t doing off the field in terms of preparation, the results aren’t there on the field. He needs to take an introspective look and figure out why. He also needs someone close to him in his ear saying the same things.
 
Don't worry guys. Dwayne has finally got a mentor who can help guide him through this process with class and professionalism.

I have no doubt the players are done with him as well. With this new press information alleging he was bragging about his stats, the play on 4th down might have been intentional stat padding on the part of Haskins and not just stupidity/inexperience. Maybe he has a team with himself on fantasy.

He had the gall to publicly throw his teammates under the bus via his agent. Like that will make the OL and other WRs go to bat for you. Even McLaurin might have been sour after that.

He's Jeff George redux.

A complete opposite is Alex Smith, who knew he was on his way out with Mahomes drafted but did everything to help and mentor Mahomes.

The lack of accountability is more than mere immaturity. It's years of conditioning and psychology built up from youth.

Haskins is the lazy guy who doesn't do homework or read the textbook and blames everything else but himself for not putting the work in to understand the subject at hand, which is football in this case.

There are guys who obsess about the work they do. Lamar Jackson is one such player. Peyton Manning as well. Deion, despite his outward personality and demeanor, was also a film junkie and obsessive about the game. Haskins doesn't need to be a hermit to be obsessive and caring about his craft, just like Manning shoots commercials and I have no doubt Sanders had a good time more than once, but the commitment still has to be there, and it isn't, and likely never will be.

If Rivera's tough-as-nail, military derived approach from Rivera has already had Haskins pouting, Belichick is ALSO military-influenced(along with the economics influence, which most football guys don't have and hence imitators don't get him), so there is no relenting of being a hardass. Belichick called out Tom Brady in meetings and the like; no doubt Haskins would be wounded every week until he wants out.
 
Just to keep things accurate, neither Ron Rivera nor Bill Belichick have ever served a day in the military. Rivera was an army brat and Belichick's dad was a WWII vet (but spent most of his time in the service playing football for the Navy Blue Jackets) before becoming a longtime scout at the Naval Academy. Rivera went to the NFL after graduation from Cal and Belichick went directly into coaching after college. I get your point, they are both old school types who embrace discipline and the chain of command, but neither guy served. I know you didn't say they served, I just hear a lot of fans state it or imply it (about both coaches) so thought it was worth expanding on.
