Watched Ford vs. Ferrari last night. Seen it several times, but pretty well done and apparently fairly accurate in terms of how things went down. Matt Damon terrific as usual and Christian Bale (one of the most underrated actors ever) is amazing as Ken Miles.

Seen that one several times and yes, Christian Bale is one of the better actors. Some facts below regarding the movie.

Are the movie's racing scenes real or CGI?​

The film's intense racing footage is 100% real with no computer generated effects. One of the only things that is CGI is the shots of the crowd, due to the enormous size of the audience, which would have been difficult to recreate.

Was Enzo Ferrari at Le Mans?​

No. "The biggest cheat in this movie: Ferrari never showed up at Le Mans," says director James Mangold. "I insistently put him there. I couldn’t stand the idea of cutting to the kid and mom and Ferrari on the phone or on radios, I couldn’t do it. Sorry, history!" As for Henry Ford II, he was present at Le Mans. -IndieWire


Did Ford win the 1966 Le Mans because of brakes?​

To a large degree, yes. Ford engineer Phil Remington (portrayed by Ray McKinnon) came up with a brake system that would allow the pit crew to quickly swap out the pads and rotors during a driver change. This meant that brakes would no longer have to be run beyond their limits. The Ford v Ferrari true story confirms that the other teams indeed cried foul, complaining that it gave Ford an unfair advantage, but there was no rule against it. -Popular Mechanics

Did Carroll Shelby bet his business on Ken Miles winning a race?​

No. Carroll Shelby never bet Henry Ford II his entire business so that Ken Miles could drive at Le Mans. Ford's right hand Leo Beebe (portrayed by Josh Lucas) did object to risks that Ken Miles took on the track, but the tension between Shelby and Beebe in the movie is significantly dramatized. Shelby also never carried a sign over to the shoulder of the track that read, "7,000+ go like hell."

Tron Legacy wasn't bad. As long as you aren't expecting a plot it was a fun light show. A good one to see with medium-sized kids.

Some of the best stuff I've watched over the last few years was animated.

The Spiderverse movies are insanely good, better than the live action ones IMO. I'm so annoyed there's a huge wait for part 3.
I adored the Arcane: League of Legends series on Netflix. The animation is amazing and the story just phenomenal (the depth, the callbacks, Mmm chef's kiss!)
I loved some of the episodes of Love:Death:Robots (also on Netflix.) It's anthology series of animated shorts in different styles. Some aren't great, but others are amazing.

And then that Predator: Killer of Killers. LOVED it.
I loved the 'Prey' movie too, and there's a sequel to that coming out soon. I think they're all done by the same guy and it just proves that the PRedator franchise finally is in good hands.

(I have my fingers well and truly crossed for the new Alien:Earth series. The last movie, Alien: Romulus, was a pretty good return to form. So I have high hopes!)

On the film front, I watched that 'The Fountain of Youth' movie on Apple TV over the weekend. I'd seen the trailer and thought it looked like a fun 'National Treasure' type romp.
It was...okay.
I love John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, but they were kind of wasted in this. It was fun I suppose, but was very predictable and very much a 'by the numbers' attempt at being a modern NAtional Treasure/Indiana Jones, but without any real charm.
 
The new Mission Impossible was very long and definitely worth the time spent in the theater. It was even less ridiculous than some of the previous movies. I was entertained and ran out of popcorn and soda. 3 hours!

Ballerina was ok, my wife loves action movies so she rates it higher than I do. IMO it wasn't anything special, but worth it at a discount theater, which is all we ever go to.

We saw the Accountant 2 on Amazon and I'm glad we didn't waste a theater visit on that one. Of course my wife liked it but I fell asleep lol.
 
Watched the shrouds few days ago, the trailer does not even go with the overall plot. Dialogue and direction were very good, overall a C-. Twenty minutes too long and the plot jumps are eh.
 
My friend & I went to brunch yesterday, then he went to see F1. (he's waaaaay into that stuff). Told me last night that it was very well done (and he's in the film biz). So we went to lunch and the matinee today...loved it. Max Verstappen and lots of other real life drivers make appearances. Brad Pitt is showing his age, but another great performance.

Edit, add: we were the only two people in the theater.

Watched Jurassic World Rebirth, out of boredom mostly. I am a huge fan of the original Jurassic Park and that's about it. I found The Lost World (garbage, good book, shitty movie) JP 3 (eh but at least they used some part from the first book). Jurassic World all of them, couldn't stand em, too much cgi, not enough plot or not enough suspense, just cringy to me. However, I enjoyed rebirth, paced well, enough suspense, enough CGI, yes the plot has been overused for years but the almost 2 hour run time moved quickly.

My wife and I took my daughter and her bf on the Sunday of opening weekend. My daughter Andie is an F1 crazed girl. We all thought the movie was terrific. Glad we saw it 1st on the big screen. The whole cast was excellent but Brad Pitt made the movie for us. I was shocked that there were only 2 other people in the show. I highly recommend it for any sports fan.
 
We ran out of movies to watch at the theater so we watched the train your Dragon movie last week and it's actually really good. We never saw the animated kids movie from years ago.

Then a few hours ago we watched F1. I didn't think my wife would be into it but she liked it as well even though she isn't into anything with cars that I sometimes watch on TV. So I'm glad that we saw that instead of another lame Jurassic garbagefest.

What they need to do is just go all out with the 500th sequel for all these lame movies and merge a Jurassic/King Kong/Godzilla/Planet of the apes. Maybe throw in a something like the X-Men or Thor/Hulk. Han Solo could even make an appearance. Harrison Ford probably needs the money.
 
I stumbled on a hidden gem last night on TCM. 'The Straight Story', a 1999 movie directed by David Lynch (but not like any other David Lynch movie I've ever seen). It is a very slow, deliberately paced movie, extremely understated, but worth every minute. The basic plot revolves around an elderly man who is disabled and who lives in a tiny Iowa town with his special needs daughter (Sissy Spacek). The man finds out his brother, who he is estranged from and hasn't spoken to in a decade, has had a stroke. The old man can't drive, has no means to get to Wisconsin where his brother lives. So he hooks a trailer up to his riding lawn mower and sets out to get to his brother.

I know it doesn't sound exciting. But it's a special movie. Richard Farnsworth (who you will recognize from other films) was nominated for Best Actor. Scores an 8/10 on IMDB which is a pretty high score for an almost unknown film.
