Obama has dismissed the GOP stop-gap plan, and there doesn't seem to be hope in sight. Boehner can't control his own party (who'd a thunk, they don't respect the guy who weeped like a baby when he got in office), Dems are being completely unreasonable, and the country is going to grind to a halt. The worst part? I haven't filed my taxes yet, so who KNOWS when I'll get my refund? Bastards!

Refund? Hell, I just had to stroke a check to Uncle Obama on Saturday. I think anyone that gets a refund shouldn't be allowed to vote

There. That ought to get things going;)

me too......I had to stroke a check as well. given that inflation is increasing (i.e., higher taxes for the same goods).....my pension has dropped.........pass thru taxes are sneaking into also sorts of charges (look closely at your phonebill some time)......I'd say Mr Obama is finding ways to get at my income.......

•1981: President Reagan vetoed a continuing resolution and 400,000 Federal employees were sent home at lunch and told not to come back. A few hours later, President Reagan signed a new version of the continuing resolution and the workers were back at work the next morning.
•1984: With no approved budget, 500,000 federal workers were sent home. An emergency spending bill has them all back at work the next day.
•1990: With no budget or continuing resolution, the government shuts down during the entire three-day Columbus Day weekend. Most workers were off anyway and an emergency spending bill signed by President Bush over the weekend has them back at work Tuesday morning.
•1995-1996: Two government shutdowns beginning on November 14, 1995, idled different functions of the federal government for various lengths of time until April of 1996. The most serious government shutdowns in the nation's history resulted from a budget impasse between Democratic President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over funding for Medicare, education, the environment and public health.

The funny thing about gov shut downs is the who does it and the who gets hurt. So far when the repub pres allows the shut down, its just a show and everything is back the next day. When clinton pulled the stunt he shut it down for days, and Im assuming obama will do the same. Who is effected? Fed employees and all the people who enjoy federal programs.

Its really strange to me that the party of the people "the democrats" are willing to go ball deep into the people to win a political battle, but the republicans "by socialist definitions are the enemy of the people" when in the white house restore the government instantly giving the people a happy ending.

Im very interested in how obama will handle this.

Well, after promising yesterday to have meetings with Reid and Beohner every day until this is resolved, it looks like he's beating feet out of town. Surprised he's not going on vacation

http://www.politico.com/politico44/

The White House gave no indication Tuesday night that President Obama was delaying planned trips to Philadelphia and New York so that he could stay in Washington to negotiate on the budget with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

According to guidance sent to reporters, Obama plans to leave for Philadelphia and New York on Wednesday, despite promising the day before that he would host Boehner and Reid at the White House if they didn’t reach a budget deal. Obama told reporters on Tuesday that he’s “prepared to meet for as long as possible” with them, and he said that if they didn’t make a deal at a meeting later that day, “then I want them back here tomorrow.”

As Fan likes to say, you have to pay attention to what he does as opposed to what he says

Just curious as to why you are saying the Republicans have a stop gap plan? I believe Rep. Paul Ryan put forth a rather detailed plan:

The only thing I would add to this is that taxes will need to be raised as well. I am not talking large sweeping taxes, but everyone is going to have to give their fair share. Unfortunately, that will be the sticking point, who gets taxed, where?

Edit: And yes Sarge, his actions never seem to match his words. I wish I could call him a buffoon, but then I might get called a racist. How about...idiot?

You bigot. Don't you know if you call him anything at all you're some kind of racist pig?

The tax situation, as you said, needs to be addressed. That's why I'm for a flat tax. 15%, no loop holes and everyone pays

Wow. I agree with Sarge on something. What the hell?

Never said anything about their long term plan. Dems voted down a short-term plan to continue running the gov't passed Friday, aka a stop-gap plan. So defensive, El!

Not sure why the link changed, but here is the original article I linked above: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/06/us/politics/06budget.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=stop gap&st=cse

Why would you get called racist for calling someone a buffoon? I would just call you old, because nobody under the age of 65 uses the word buffoon, lol.

I did some research and found a copy of this letter sent to Sarge. Some you may find it interesting.

Dear Sarge,

For only the second time in my adult life, I am not ashamed of my country. I want to thank the hard working American people for paying $242 thousand dollars for my vacation in Spain . My daughter Sasha, several long-time family friends, my personal staff and various guests had a wonderful time. Honestly, you just haven't lived until you have stayed in a $2,500.00 per night suite at a 5-Star luxury hotel. Thank you also for the use of Air Force 2 and the 70 Secret Service personnel who tagged along to be sure we were safe and cared for at all times.

Air Force 2 only used 47,500 gallons of jet fuel for this trip and carbon emissions were a mere 1,031 tons of CO2. These are only rough estimates, but they are close. That's quite a carbon footprint as my good friend Al Gore would say, so we must ask the American citizens to drive smaller, more fuel efficient cars and drive less too, so we can lessen our combined carbon footprint.

I know times are hard and millions of you are struggling to put food on the table and trying to make ends meet. I do appreciate your sacrifice and do hope you find work soon. I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago. I just had to get away for a few days!

Cordially,
Michelle Obama

P.S. Thank you as well for the $2 BILLION trip to India we recently went on. Love ya, mean it.

P.S.S. We're having a great time in Hawaii ..

He's getting ready to come to Kingsmill this weekend. I'm curious to see if flys Air Force 1 or Marine 1. His first year in office he flew from Andrews to Newport News/Williamsburg airport in Air Force One.

A friend of mine called me last night and has to work security there this weekend. We were taking bets on Obama canceling due to budget negotiations or coming regardless.

I think he comes regardless.

UPDATE: He is bringing the family here for some rest and relaxation.

To be fair, I grew up in Williamsburg, and the traffic can be horrendous. OK, it's not actually that bad. Actually, it's only bad in the Summer on Richmond Rd. There is really no good excuse for him not driving the three hours to get down here.

It takes two to tango in these situations - both Republicans AND Democrats are taking the hard-line approach right now. But its the Republicans who said "We'll accept X amount of spending cuts." Now that the Dems are offering $X, the Repubs are saying that's not good enough. True, the Dems should have passed a budget a million years ago, however that's no excuse to not to bargain now (IMO).

Goaldeje, like you I was born in the area and still live here. Guess he doesn't ride here cause shutting down 64& 95 would be a nightmare.

Guess I don't even see the need for this trip, especially recently got back on a trip to Brazil. This is just a waste of our taxpayer money.

Nah, if you do it the right time of day, it doesn't have to be horrible. But I also agree that he just had a vacation. I suppose he is selling this as more economical because he doesn't have to travel as far.

Hey, he's off to Ireland and other countries next month. Indeed, we have to give up our vacations but God forbid he give up his third of the year
