DRAFT DAY (3)

What does this draft mean for the current roster?

IMO:

1. Gruden, despite initial praise for the OL productivity on the ground, is rebuilding this group one step at a time. New LG in free agency, move Kory to center and release Will Montgomery. Now, the drafting of OT Moses and OG Long. These players may or may not start right away here but one thing is for sure, this staff doesn't have any faith in LeRibeus, Gettis or Compton. Those guys are toast.

2. The addition of Murphy indicates to me that Rob Jackson was resigned for insurance but is not going to get that much time on the field if there is an injury to Orakpo or Kerrigan. I think it also is a sign that former fifth round pick, Brandon Jenkins, has not impressed the staff as a pass rush option from the outside.

3. The flow of the draft is such that Thomas and Rambo can exhale a bit now as they know they are going to get a legit chance this summer to secure jobs on the roster. There won't be any blue chip prospects coming in to challenge them, although we could always add another veteran.

4. Speaking of veterans, if Long can come in and show well enough perhaps we can jettison Chris Chester and his $2.7M cap hit for 2014 to go out and sign or trade for help at safety, inside linebacker or getting that second pass-catching TE.

Has everyone's voracious appetite for O-linemen been satisfied? It was like savages with red meat at BGO.

Can we now focus some more on the D in rounds 4-7?

ILB, D-line, CB and maybe another TE.

the murphy pick is growing on me in terms of potential. moses, hopefully, is an upgrade over turnstyle. Long? hope that knee survives STs.

not a bad first day draft. not great.

my concern? I think our competition got comparatively better with their drafts. all on paper right now.

No, now I want to see the team find a mean, nasty 3-4 defensive end that can come in and allow us to move Chris Baker to Nose Tackle full time at 335 :)

That would make me happy :D

If you were around for the 1980's Gibbs Teams you always believe it comes down to the lines........................

McCullers 6'7 352 is still out there for DL. Go get him.

I don't see much to criticize - we dropped back, took a chance on a LB we apparently love, STILL got one of the quality tackles we coveted, and grabbed another OL beast. Fans said beef up the OL, and we did that emphatically while getting a bonus player in the process.

Very good work Redskins.

Tracy Porter is a much better cover corner than Josh Wilson. One has to believe that David Amerson will continue improving with experience.

Hopefully, Ryan Clark will give us that year to bridge to Phillip Thomas at safety.

With those changes and an improved pass rush this defense should be much better.

We don't have a pro bowl anchor in the middle of the field. Perhaps in Round 1 next May?

Now that we have Moses on the Oline.......guess we'll be parting defenses like the Red Sea?

So let it be written............

Yeah, safety will have to wait until next year. Clark and the gang will have to hold us over one season.

If you are referring to ILB, that may also have to wait.

it would be amazing if Phillip Thomas could be the answer at safety, but I'm not counting on it.

Again, I would like to see Baker at NT. Cofield starts out the season well but wears down by mid-season at 300 and seems better suited to being a DE in the 3-4 or a rotation player inside perhaps with Baker.

Chris may be able to play on the outside at a credible level, but that is not using his skills, strength to the maximum.

We need to put him in better position to be an impact player which to me means grabbing a DE on Day 3 that can come in and contribute on the outside on at least a part-time basis on run downs.

Wait a minute! Antonio Richardson is still available at the start of Round 4 :D

Maybe we are not done on the OL after all

I'm pleased so far with the areas covered. Still want a big nasty to rotate in with Baker for nose. Then again the Bake may take that spot and own it from here on out.

Time for d-line & lb's the rest of the way. Possibly TE stud from a small school would be nice, but I ain't picky after today.

We can survive with a mediocre secondary if we have a terrific pass rush.

It has worked for the Carolina Panthers. They've never had a great secondary, but have always been known for a great front 7. A great pash rush covers up a mediocre secondary. It makes their jobs much easier.

lol
i read an article by Keim where he said, in regards to Long, "whether or not Long [works out] remains to be seen"

dude hasn't been on the team 6 hours.

'Whether _______________ (insert name of every player drafted in the past 48 hours) works out, remains to be seen'. Keim is one of the best Redskins writers out there, but even he says stupid things once in awhile.

this is some bullshit. How in the hell do the niners keep getting these guys for so cheap?!

Does Harbaugh have a family member somewhere in the Bills organization? ;)

any chance we're shifting to a 4-3 base with orakpo on the line and Murphy olb?

I just lost the draft. Why does ESPN have to switch again?

thanks. not stirring the pot...I just remember the big stir the media made and it dawned on me that the whole story just died. would be interesting for media analysts to examine why that is the case sometime downstream. in some respects...this is probably a good thing for Sam.

The whole thing died once his combine numbers came out and it turned out my Sainted Grandmother was almost as athletic. The kid does have heart, though.
