The reason he didn't show up for meeting and practices (which is pretty much inexcusable) was because the Eagles wanted him to continue to return punts. Is it reasonable for a pro-bowl caliber, starting receiver in his sixth year to not want to return punts? To risk injury when he's more valuable in his starting role? Even Gibbs would only ask Green to do it infrequently when it was a huge game.
It's reasonable to return punts for 10+ million a year. It's reasonable to understand that you signed a contract and your employer is asking you to do something that is in no way, shape, or form outside the bounds of a reasonable asignment from your employer. They weren't asking him to traffic drugs - they were asking him to return punts.
It's also reasonable for him to not like that, and to go about discussing the issue and trying to resolve it in a manner he sees fit like a responsible adult.
It is not reasonable for him to sign a 10+ million dollar/year contract to play a game, then refuse to show up to meetings because he doesn't like the position he was assigned. Especially when that assignment is literally a tiny fraction of his playing time.
As for the 'character' issue, everyone does realize that he doesn't beat his wife, hasn't been arrested - not for DUI, assault, dog-fights, etc. It doesn't look like he smokes weed...not having been suspended for any games. He also works with a community charity in Philly. This is pretty much a hit job by the Eagles and that tight-wad Laurie.
Kelly is going to realize that DeSean was a big part of that offense...an offense Kelly believes DeSeans' skill set didn't fit in. And their loss will be our gain.
DeSean will make us cringe at times with his celebrations, but he'll produce...and I can tolerate seeing his TD celebrations over and over and over again.
He has been arrested - unless the news reports have exaggerated the case and he wasn't arrested but instead cited (plausible, I haven't fact-checked it.) And it was for having weed, actually. But I honestly don't care about that - NFL players smoke weed and some make enough mistakes to get caught. I know that, and everyone else knows that. I bet a lot of our own guys do it, but are just smart enough to not get caught. I'm cool with it.
And the character issue concerns are clearly related to his attitude on the field, in the locker room, and the report about gang affiliations that (at this point) seems unsubstantiated and a weak, cowardly move by an eagles front office not known for doing that.
But yeah - he's a better person than Meriweather. And we're not putting together a choir. I just hope he's not a Hernandez in waiting. The more time that goes on the more the leaks from the eagles front office look cowardly and pathetic. We'll see.
