Commanders Trade for QB Carson Wentz

As it stands today, we are roughly a million over with everyone undercontract. The first 51 actually leave us almost 3 million under.

And yes, I know one of the reasons (probably the biggest reason) that we are in a great cap situation is no legit QB on the roster. However, it is rare that a team adds a guy with this many question marks who costs this much overnight. Teams who pay this much usually negotiate these contracts themselves, not inherit someone else's stuff.

Look, I mostly love his numbers and I think his addition makes McLaurin the best WR in the NFC East (maybe the best WR in the NFC not named Kupp). I wish he was more than 62% career completion guy but then Brady is only 64%.

If I'm really honest, he was the guy I wanted before we did the QB Pod last week when the guys largely convinced me Winston would be a better option at less money.

Several of the Colt’s player posted nice messages about/to Carson on Twitter yesterday. Not exactly defining, I know.

As far as the salary goes…the QB salary levels rocket up with every passing year. It depends on where a team is in their current deals as to whether or not they look reasonable. For ad much as Wentz currently makes, it’s still less than Cousins. 😉
 
A lot of unconfirmed chatter this morning that discussions with Collins did not go well and that he may be released today.
 
It’s guaranteed whether we keep him for 1 year or 3. If they want to eat it all now that’s fine but I suspect they will want the cap relief (some anyway) now if they can figure out a way.

Reports are coming out now that Collins is expected to be released in the coming days. Flowers is ~$10mil but $0 of dead money which makes it very easy to re-negotiate and cut that cap number in half for 2022. Those two moves alone free up about $11mil, so things can be done without being to crazy. The 3 biggest free agents I think we all want back are McKissic / Carter / and to a lesser extend McCain. It's possible to sign them with some back ended deals with decent signing bonuses to work the numbers knowing that Wentz's number (if you keep him) does not go up either of the next two seasons, but the cap does. You gotta set aside about $6 mil to pay draft picks (I dont know why this table does not show a 1st round pick.. it's odd...?) so there will be other manuevering I'm sure with guys like Roullier / Logan Thomas / Schweitzer / Fuller to make up more room.

I couldn’t find the clip, but it’s like in the movie Rudy where Coach Parseghian tells Rudy that he wishes God had put his heart in some of his football players. That’s Ron right now meeting with Heinicke talking about the Wentz trade.
 
Curious if anyone has seen or heard any comments from Wentz himself since the trade? Seems odd to me

I think NFL rules either prohibit or discourage players/coaches from discussing trades u til free agency officially starts and the trades become official.

It takes a little work but it's not hard to figure out that the realistic competition would have been a handful of teams that wouldn't get what they hope for with Wentz. Texans are a dumpster fire. Bucs needed Tom Brady. They can "chase" the dream, but they cannot win without Tom Brady.

Lions are tied up with Goff and have way too many issues to piss resources.

I don't think Indy wanted Cousins

Pittsburgh and Seattle don't have a QB but they know the business...you suck and draft one, not chase the past. That's why Bobby Wagner was released and that's why Rudolph has their full backing. Pittsburgh is tanking and they know who they want in the college ranks.

Saints are in massive, massive cap hell and Sean Payton bailed, knowing it was the end.

Panthers might just stick with what they got and tank for one.

It's not just having an opening, it's wanting to fill that opening with Wentz over what they have.

It absolutely should motivate Wentz to be here. All he has heard is how Indy gave up on him after a year, despite having given away a first rounder for him. Additionally, he has the Jacksonville game and the bad teammate narrative that escalated with that forgettable Week 18 game hanging over him.

When you think of it, it could be a good pairing for him here in Washington. He doesn't have to even give us a top 5 performance at QB here. If he can function adequately, play smart, and give us top 12 to 14 play at the position, we won't know what to do with ourselves. We have lacked anything approaching good at QB for so long that this fanbase would quickly embrace him if he plays well, which he is certainly capable of. That sense of being wanted kind of seems like it has eluded Wentz at times in his career. He kind of needs that and Washington could work in that regard.

Getting back to the topic of motivation, we should have one of the most highly motivated QB rooms in all of football for that matter. Wentz's motivation should be obvious. Beyond that, Heinicke should be eager to bust down some doors too. He has heard for an entire year how he isn't good enough and the team has actively come out and stated they need an upgrade. With Wentz, Heinicke certainly must see a bit of an opening to play at some point given his injury history. He damn well better be ready to show the best version of himself.

All in all, I think the whole room should benefit.
 
I keep reading about Wentz's "injury history" so I had to go look it up. He has played 85 out of a possible 97 regular-season games. 5 of the lost games were the direct result of an ACL tear.

The Eagles shut him down for the last 3 games of the 2018 season over back issues that it appears he could have played with but the franchise decided not to risk it.

He missed 4 games in 2020 after getting benched for Jalen Hurts. I can't find any injury that this might be related to.

He played all 17 games for the Colts last year.

I don't think he really has an injury history, per se. At least not one that is worse than anyone else or worth being worried about.
